Pieces of that mushroomed wedge will be quite painful to have removed from any part of your body. Not to mention if your femoral artery is quit exposed due to your stance. Aside form that, thanks for the information.
@weird1brp LOL, wait a minute . . . LOL. Yes, everything I do is going to kill me. I've split wood all my life, and yes there are some chances involved with the mushroomed head but, . . .I'm sure that it is more probable that you will be flattened like a pancake while talking on your cell phone as a truck runs over you. It almost happened to me several times and I was not on the phone (defensive driving) because I am aware of all the idiots out there. Anyway, thanks for your insight.
As a fella who regularly takes 18"+ logs down by hand, he isn't kidding about the natural cracks in logs. And my wedges look mushroomy as hell, keeps them from hiding in the log IMO. Excercise is good for you folks.
My old metalwork shop teacher would go nuts if he saw the mushroomed head of that one wedge.... ha ha, with glasses on you are ok, but someone walking close by might not be, just a thought. Also have you seen the method of splitting wood inside a tyre or using a bungee cord.
@deanznz Yes, if I had a big grinder I would keep the wedges clean on the edges. That would minimize the chance of bullet sized chunks flying off. Never saw those other methods, I assume the Bungee cord or tire is to hold the wood in place.
@Ghostkamo yes tyre and bungee allows you to split multiple lengths of wood together without them falling over on every strike of the axe. The tyre can add a bit of safety for people who miss the wood all together but the bungee is probably best for your long lengths of wood.
I don't get it, I think I'm going to need a little help. Why don't you come over this next weekend and you can show me how to split my pile of wood. ;-)

I use a Sotz monster maul primarily, and then a regular maul and a double bitted axe.
