December...she is here once again...the fifth season of our lives...when our roots grow deeply and our memories once again vividly come alive. Loved ones stir in our minds and hearts as we sit before that warm fire in the den. This kind of music keeps us there! Lady N
The conductor & producer of this album, Robert Sadin, has another great record, "Art of Love". See the music video "Douce Dame" on the deutschegrammophon1 Youtube channel.
Sting didn't make a new Police album to go make this !? and Plant didn't make a new Zep album to go make blue-grass !? I hope I don't loose my mind when I get old...
I don't really know which lullaby he's talking about, which contains "terror" themes amidst their calming ones. But it is a fascinating idea. It relates to the idea of transmutation: From fear to peace. The love in the heart of the parent is the crucible where the transmutation takes place, the child supplies the ingredients and the place for the product. The love of the parent is multiplied. The seed of love is also planted in the child. Soul cake.
@altavistacop Well, I never heard that one as a kid, although I have heard that lulliby. I never remember anyone saying that last line though... I only remember hearing the first three. I guess mom never said that last one, censored it or something. Maybe I needed to hear the last line back then, maybe I'm lucky that I didn't...
I completely agree with ApocalyptilGirl, this man is truly a work of art. His voice is so.......passionate.....soft....even when he isnt singing and just talking you want to stop doing what you are and listen to him. He is really something, I am a psychologist by hobby, and I do sometimes use Sting to calm people down. Sting......God be with him!
My husband can work a 12 hour day and he says this music is just so relaxing that listening just destresses him. I also have a high stress job and Sting has the most soothing tone. The man is amazing.... My favorite artist... his writing is incredible....may he bring years and years of music to all.
love this man. can't help but feel him to be a kindred spirit, but maybe he evokes that in everyone. he's turned music on it's head and re-written our hearts tune. if this isn't art I don't know what is.
I think this is one of the best albums produced in the last ten years. Sting, thank you for upgrading the level of newly produced music! And make no mistake, you can listen to this album all year. My favorite song is Peter Warlock's Balulalow. Such a beautiful arrangement. Sting does something with his voice that it sounds as if what he sings sounds backwards. Very special effect. Thank you Sting ( again ... ).
Soul Cake. Soul Cake. Please don't piss on my Soul Cake. An apple, a pear I'll pop your cherry. Anything to make the mood fuckin' merry. One for Peter, two for Paul. Now it's time to cup my balls.
Mr. Sumner, that's even more brilliant than your previous releases: Dream Of The Blue Turtleheads, Nothing Like My Buns, and Mercury Balling. Continue the divine poetry, Sir Sting.
It's not new it is an old folk song about begging for the Soul Cakes people would bake for the dead on All Hallows Eve, that of course they never ate.
Thanks sir Sting to promote this kind of music and theses fabulous artists ! thanks also to have some celtic harp player ! it is an honor to see that you know and appreciate this instrument !
I just ordered the dvd and cd this morning. I was born on Christmas day and this year turn 50. I told my husband I wanted this very badly and this morning he said order it! I love all of Sting's music but this cd promises to be wonderful. I am also a winter person and the tunes evokes the feelings of the warmth and the cold of the season. Every cord a paintbrush that creates a mental image. Love Sting's talent!
It's not the first time Sting has walked in snow in a video... or was that rain... I know it was cold - Englishman In New York!
I like this new project though. Very nice, not your typical Christmas album and also not particularly a joyful or joyous music, but there is a sense of like he says a sort of rebirth-like feeling which can be cozily positive.
And you got one....maybe this is a little more than you dreamt of, but still it's magic. Here in Holland it's still mostly wonderful, the snow. In England and Scotland it's probably a little too much... But let's all be grateful that we, and especially our children, can experience a seriously cold and snowy winter.
@KCOtutti1 My goodness, Holland is the most beautiful place on earth, I couldn't imagine it dressed in white, it must seem enchanted. Here in Atlanta, Georgia we rarely get snow, and my grandmother actually had a heart attack because she saw a snowflake (she was so happy). It's heartwarming to hear that you do appreciate it so, even though it must get REALLY old sometimes. Anyway. blessings and joy to you, dear!
Kind words about winter! kinda cool to be outside(deer hunting) and see/feel the snowfall as I sat beneath a spruce. No luck so I left only to have what looked like a 50 pound owl bugger off from a few feet away...we scared the be-jesus out of each other!
Sure...I'll order this CD...I too love winter! thanks "Sting-a-ding-ding"
I quite agree with all said below, I love Sting' s music, especially a Hounds of Winter remake is wonderful, I totally admire his songwriting, winter is indeed a time of the imagination. Do feel that Sting is quite an arrogant man but hey if he keeps on making this kind of music... who cares?! Cheers
I'm interested in checking this album out. Sting is one of the most fascinating musicians in the world---this winter album may very well just be way ahead of the rest of us...but at the same time, if he's able to capture a mood, and make a bleak winter seem beatiful....it's worth at least checking it out
As a long-time Sting fan, I feel initially disappointed by this new venture of his. The risk of being too mannered and maybe even boring is great, However, given his amazing musicality, who knows... Maybe he is ahead of his peers, and a benefit of doubt is in order. I will always love him for all the emotion he has given to people.
Feel exactly the same. I'm actually attracted by his intellectualism (wish there were more smart musicians) but I miss songs with a little more grunt and he can take it to the poseur edge sometimes....Still, he could just keep talking/singing and I would thud to the floor, sound resonates. I'm actually DESPERATE to hear the new stuff by Adam Lambert...maybe I've become a Cougar!!!
I'll grow on me, like all of Sting's previous work. But I have to say, I wish he wasn't so full of it, and a bit more down to earth. Good re-works though... Sting always created better remakes than his own originals. Couldn't you just get it right the first time? :)
Tutto terribilmente rassicurante... melodie semplici, suoni acustici. Una fuga in un inverno mitico... e in un tempo perduto... insomma poche responsabilità e soprattutto poche idee.
I hate to say this but I agree with you WTF. He has that whole D& D thing going on. I expect to see him slay a dragon next. OMG I agree. I AGREE!!!!!!
ZITTI!!!
well, Sting is ALWAYS good for a surprise which is nice considering all the artist (?) that turn out albums sounding exactly like the ones before. You might call it "unique style" or "distinct whatever" I call it uninspired, burned out, no creative bone left with all the STAR self-importance . So often their last quality album was the one they became HUGE with and after that it's da capo al fine (Bon Jovi, Alanis Morrissette &&). Sting always explores new teritory - a real gift to the audience
4 Days To Go Until Release! YES! Not only is this Sting's new album, but this is exactly the type of music I was looking for! what a great coincidence. And, a note to all the idiots out there who are stating that this album is going to be bad; Haven't your mothers told you the saying "Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover."? Music is Gordon's life, and he has always delivered quality music This album reflects what he feels is winter, and personally, I think this is gonna be a great album
Interesting. I'd always been under the impression the The Snows They Melt The Soonest was written by folk singer Anne Briggs. That's what I think Dick Gaughan reckons anyhow. She'll be happy sometime soon!!!!
Hi..no snow it melts the soonest wasnt written by Anne Briggs although she did a lovely version that Dick Gaughan prob learnt it from...its in a collection called the Northumbrian Minstrelsy (ed Bruce and Stokoe) a collection of north eastern songs and tunes. Snow it melts the soonest is said to be collected from a street singer of the time (around 1820) Dont know why Sting doesnt say where he got he song from tho.
I'd say every man, at some point in his life, gets the itch to grow out a beard...guess Sting's time has come. Along with the tonal difference, these songs should be a pleasant change of pace.
True that about the beard. He looks awesome with it, too. And I'm stoked about this album. I'm only about to turn 21 and I already had a beard a lot like that one for four years.

Is that Sting? I couldn't tell, with the hairline that's too high, the voice that's too low, and the rat-infested beard. He should change his name to "Stink"! This crap makes the gay Jaguar commercials sound like freakin' SYNCHRONICITY II. Someone call Copeland to beat the crap out of this limey. Kick him in Her Majestey's jewels- it may raise his voice a bit. "SOUL CAKE"? Did I hear that right? I'm a RITZ man myself, faggot. Thanks for the new ice scraper, Gordon! Wooo-Hooo!!!!! ;P
what i love best about sting is that he never does the "expected", and thank God because we get enough of that these days. all any artist can hope for is to interpret their vision and translate it for the world. and i think he does a wonderful job of doing just that.
I'm gonna play this album at a Christmas party, plus with alot of other Christmas jazz, classical and pop hits

This will be the first Sting CD I have bought in 12 years. This is pure Magic! So excited by this!

Rather too self indulgent!

Tutto terribilmente rassicurante... melodie semplici, suoni acustici. Una fuga in un inverno mitico... e in un tempo perduto... insomma poche responsabilità e soprattutto poche idee.

this is kind of what i've been needing for a while..

ok, wtf.... is this a cruel April Fools joke?
I like his vision of winter, but the song is horrible.

I hate to say this but I agree with you WTF. He has that whole D& D thing going on. I expect to see him slay a dragon next. OMG I agree. I AGREE!!!!!!

lucadi1977 2 years ago
reddevil82 2 years ago
lucadi1977 2 years ago
reddevil82 2 years ago
ZITTI!!!

The vibes on this album are exactly what Sting has done best in his solo work - from Soul Cages onwards. Really looking forward to it.

well, Sting is ALWAYS good for a surprise which is nice considering all the artist (?) that turn out albums sounding exactly like the ones before.

She'll be happy sometime soon!!!!
mrmiffy2000 2 years ago
Hi..no snow it melts the soonest wasnt written by Anne Briggs although she did a lovely version that Dick Gaughan prob learnt it from...its in a collection called the Northumbrian Minstrelsy (ed Bruce and Stokoe) a collection of north eastern songs and tunes. Snow it melts the soonest is said to be collected from a street singer of the time (around 1820) Dont know why Sting doesnt say where he got he song from tho.

that post below was in reply to someone elses but it doesnt make as much sense stood alone! Sorry!

I knew the tune was traditional. The words, I'm told came from a stand alone poem, and were adapted to to fit the tune by Bert Lloyd and Anne Briggs

Dont know! I thought it was trad, but am open to correction!

I'd say every man, at some point in his life, gets the itch to grow out a beard...guess Sting's time has come. Along with the tonal difference, these songs should be a pleasant change of pace.
sowhatnowhere 2 years ago 5
True that about the beard. He looks awesome with it, too. And I'm stoked about this album. I'm only about to turn 21 and I already had a beard a lot like that one for four years.

Imagine that when he was in "the Police" he was told that in 20 years or more he would make a song called soul cake.
