  • reminds me of john lennon

  • This is like Pretty Mary K but a lot better

  • @everyone

    Everything's Okay.

  • @ALeonardoA116 music wasn't a job to him, it was an escape ??? iv'e heard an interview where he said music was something he HAD to do.. or something along those lines :) anyway i'm just glad he did make albums, the world would be a less colourful place with out him..

  • @siebenny He apparently thought that he was abused as a child by his stepfather whilst living in Texas, but he couldn't remember it (he thought it was a repressed memory). Without music, he claimed he would probably have 'gone after' his stepdad, so music really was escapism to him.

A really complex and tragic man; a truly heartbreaking story.

  • @ALeonardoA116 he was probably hyper about it and depressed otherwise. just a guess. Some people work that way. It was also probably force of habit for him.

  • there's something about elliott smith's music and lyrics that just moves me in a way that even the greats like the Beatles or Radiohead could never do

  • @ALeonardoA116 People who kill themselves paradoxically are people who love life much easier. Elliott was injured irreversibly in its infancy, the pain has always accompanied. But at the same time, the person who was, which is really beyond the wounds, is a person deeply human, intelligent, sensible, emotional, sweet, generous. Elliott loved words, loved to express himself, communicate, excite others and himself. For this he could not tolerate that his childhood was fouled forever.

  • @ALeonardoA116 Elliott is a right, a good, a hymn to life. Not a sad, not a depressed ... ... but a wounded, a mistreated.

Come in my dreams, please, let me hold you, only once

  • Comment removed

  • Will everyone please stop with all the "sad-sap, depression" comments. Its like only remembering a fraction of who he was.

  • @ancook58 couldnt agree more with you dude .. near enough every comment is all sad , sappy or depressing .. i dont listen to elliott because im depressed or any other feeling for that matter , i listen to elliott simply because i love his music and thats it.

  • @Bushie1988 Amen. I feel like Elliott, or any artist thats passed for that matter, would want to be remembered for their work, in Elliotts case his magnificent compositions, not for the way he died or his depression. Sure he may have had some depression, but he was also funny as hell. :-)

  • @ancook58 yeah exactly ! he was quirky a lot of the time .. bleh ! fuck it if people wanna sit in dark rooms remembering elliott for being a depressed , sappy tortured soul then let them haha well be the people that remembers him for his quirky , fun and generic outlook on life ! and of course his awesome songs.

  • every since i was fourteen, elliott smith's music has always been there through the good times and the bad times. He's my main inspiration for everything I write and play.

  • Oh, Pretty Mary K

  • this stoped me from suicide.... i <3 the guy to bad he died....cause he couldn't take it anymore

  • @xXBlueStars16Xx i listened to this song and then my sister called me and told me everythiing would get better when i moved out and let me stay w her a few days and i decided not to kill myself as well!

  • What album is this on ?

  • @F50Italia it didn't make an album. but it is the alternate-lyrics version of Pretty Mary K on New Moon

  • does anyone else think this songs about a sailor who falls in love with a prostitute, and hes gota wait by the dock while shes out bangin some other dude? cuz i think thats what its about. best song ever

  • @zuludelta100 3: your thoughts are annoying

  • two daggers? do you mean two stab wounds? and although brutal, i dont see how that would make someone an idiot. i myself wouldn't be able to do it. if he did kill himself it was either a sobering moment or a very surreal one.

  • i dont' believe in his suicide..who would be so idiot to kill himself with two daggers?

  • @hilarita82 idiotic

  • @lgreenstien i thought was a stupid comment.. (also written bad in english) then i watched the presentation video on you profile...deep song..compliments;)

  • @zuludelta100

    sweden

  • @zuludelta100 Fuck You.

  • interesting version, but the Pretty Mary K version is a lot better in my opinion--the lyrics in that are some of the best Elliott ever wrote.

  • I love the closed captioning on this vid. It gets exactly one line right.

The song is great but I think I prefer the Prettty Mary K version of it better. It seems to hit me a little harder.

  • @cmartmozzy lol I didn't even know youtube had closed captioning

  • while your with some other man..my arms around the moon,..i'll be with you soon,,

  • thanks for putting this up. First time I've heard it. By the end of the song I really got the chills when he starts talking about walking on water

  • he killed him self,,, stabbed him self in the heart twice.. in 2003

  • @talieson69

    Allegedly

  • I think I like this version better than pretty mary k.

  • @ALeonardoA116

drugs maybe? cause they knock your inner critic out for a while and your inner child or creative side whatever you wanna call it can come out and play a while. i donno just guessing.

  • sounds like nick drake i wonder if nick drake had any effect on his work

  • @villasixx yeah ppl do say there is a big similarity, partic. in the guitar style

  • pretty words that you whispered...maybe i misunderstood

  • Such an incredibly sad story, beautiful symbolism and imagery.

  • @ALeonardoA116 Creating music gives you a pretty good feeling. It's as if you've cleaned out all of your negative thoughts. I'm sure that was what drove him to create more and more music.

  • beautiful song!

  • beautiful song! im sorry elliott \

    R.I.P

  • beautiful song! i m sorry

    R.I.P

  • my favourite one

  • love it

  • His music will live forever in my heart and soul.

  • where can a copy of this? its beautiful.

  • Wow, this is the one Youtube video of Elliott Smith's that hasn't exploded into a conversation about drugs. Yes! Agree with most all the comments here. Beautiful song.

  • @lisadbush he does all the instruments and vocals for almost every song he s ever made..

  • I jokingly tell my therapist that everythings ok.then i whine about my problems and cry.

  • amazing. I would pay whoever put this up. Thank you so much.

  • @lisadbush - him layered.

  • Pretty little words simply cannot explain how wonderful it is to listen to Elliott Smith.

  • I really feel this profound, Everything is o.k. I think it is better than pretty m.k. Elliot Smith is truly a genuine, brilliant songwriter and God bless his heart. Itis never fair thee well my friend. Myna

  • I like this song because it is enigmatic. Meaning floats by vacant. Almost like a total meditation for Master Elliott. It does have a contemplative quality, I'm sure. It also appears like he's not frustrated with himself on this one.

  • elliott smith is the baudelaire of music!

  • I wish I had a car where I could put a CD on with all of his Songs. I would just go on riding it, till i saw every little spot of this planet.

  • I didnt know this version, i like it very mucha.. than you friend!!.. (And now in my language: no conocia esta version, me gusta mucho, gracias amigo.) jejeje

  • Does anyone know where I can download this song?

    I can't find it anywhere.

  • it called Pretty Mary K part 2 or 2nd version.

  • @azillia420 if you dont have it i can try to email you the mp3 of it

  • @shinesinpines could you possibly do the same for me? email the mp3:)

  • Conor is a tool

  • I Love the things conor oberst said about his music.

"sometimes when you're not feeling good, you have to listen to really sad music like Elliott Smith's he wrote the sweetest, saddest, most gentle songs". Oberst also said he liked to "listen to Elliott Smith's songs when he couldn't find anyone to talk to on the phone" and thought that it was sad that, "through his music, Smith had the ability to answer feelings in others that he was unable to answer in himself".

And I Love Elliott Smith. <3

  • I like the vocals better than on the final pretty mary k. especially when he sings "I dont need no satisfaction and I don't..."

  • eliott was a funny guy everyone portrays him as some sad sac he was actully chill as shit of course dont remeber much

  • pretty mary Kish?..

  • @leraginasian

    ..pretty mary ..jane/kush? :o

  • @grandmastersmith haha I meant K-ish.

  • I just love all his music

  • i'd love to see a songbook of his stuff. i don't just mean the more popular tunes. i mean everything.

  • o crap... this is Pretty Mary K Version 2.... with re-made lyrics... or maybe this was this original tune

  • was the original. You can find it on his mal studio rarities.

  • this song works perfect with the warmness of a summer day in nature

  • some lyrics in this song make me think that it's about prostitution.. but i'm not sure. love it anyway

  • @xtoffee92x i agree with you - the pretty mary k version makes it more obvious - kinda sounds like he's in love with a prostitute

  • I made that connection for a moment as well when I was reading a bit about jack the ripper. One of his victims names was Mary Kelly, and she was a prostitute... hmmm... i wonder.

  • This guy created songs from his both pain and sweetness, making everything so pure and fragile

I wish he's now feeling okay though ..

You' are the greatest songwriter ever.

    XO.

  • Obviously he meant he hoped he was doing well in whatever after-life there is, to make up for his hard life.

  • I'm curious as to why you believe its about hope of doing well in an after-life. I personally saw it as him almost trying to convince himself that everything's okay, but of course there is a lot more to the song than just that. I have not yet taken time to understand it all yet.

  • Does anybody have the guitar tabs for this song?

  • I kinda like how he's a little out of sync with himself in this version. It's almost like a chorus of Elliotts. Elliott Smith, Master of sarcasm. It's okay, It's alright, Nothing's wrong.

  • really, nothing was okay :(

  • :T I honestly don't know how to explain the emotions I feel for his music...

  • so whispery and melodic. elliott's music makes me feel warm inside.

  • i've never heard this version before. im glad i did. wish he didn't die. :[

  • This makes my heart beat so fast....

  • @MissMisery123

i was thinking that too... pure elliott

  • I simply adore this song

  • this is my favorite version of the 3 (?) are there more than 3? i wouldn't be surprised :)

  • Pretty Mary K is the song title to TWO of Elliott's songs. Everything's Okay has alternative lyrics to ONE of them (the one on New Moon). The two songs with the same title sound totally different.

  • yes, everything's OK are the alternate lyrics to the Mary K on New moon. much like the enchanted night early miss misery.

  • good to know, thanks :-)

  • Great song. Everything was not okay for him :(

  • Your mind is a wonderland, Elliott. <3

    I love youu.

  • ELLIOTT SMITH = OVER 9000!!!!!!

no a "winny" (whiney) little bitch u punk now u man up and get the fuck out NathanPathan u FOOOOLIO!!!!!

  • mymaya could you PM me a d/l link for this? all b-side websites are down and stuff :( :(

  • Its on Limewire.

  • this song owns RIP Elliot smith. . . .

  • Anybody know if this recording was before or after it was called "Pretty Mary K" during the Either/Or sessions? His voice and the production almost sound like it's from "A Basement on A Hill"...

  • after

  • Really? I'm surprised! Do you have any more information on this recording?

  • Elliott was apparantly recyclying a lot of old recordings during the Basement sessions. He must have really liked the title Pretty Mary K, used it for the other song on Figure 8, and while messing around with this one, just renamed it. I don't have both recordings present, but I would not be surprised if he just recorded vocals and tweeked the song over the original

Pretty Mary K" recording like he did a lot of at the time

  • the guitar is different in this one

  • @ninkly It is a Basement-era recording.

  • @ninkly yes ive only heard this as pretty mary k!! amazing to hear it wiyh totally different lyrics.the amazing thing is both versions work fine.what a talent we lost.

  • elliott was such an amazing song writer. he explains how i feel better than most artists.

  • where can i download this from?

  • Greart

  • I liked it very much.Brought me back some memories from The Beatles.Great Job.

  • either way it sounds amazing

  • I think i like it as Pretty Mary K better, like on New Moon. Can't there be more than one Pretty Mary K? Love it all:)

  • I love the lyrics.. <3

  • I love at the end how he hums a little bit.

    <3

  • The harmony is definitely him on this one.

  • my arms around the moon, ya ill be with you soon

  • In almost all his songs he does harmony too. There are a few exceptions but I think it's him in this song.

  • yes it is usually Elliott. sometimes neil gust would do it. In St. Ides Heaven Rebbeca Gates did harmony, but thats the only harmony i can think of outside of elliott himself or someone from heatmiser

  • I prefer this version to the new moon one. I listened to this through headphones a year or so ago and it blew my mind. Great song

  • this song IS pretty mary k (other version) from new moon. he changed "everythings ok" to "pretty mary k" in the lyrics. and changed some of the other lyrics. but otherwise most of the lyrics are the same.

  • He changed Pretty Mary K to Everything's Okay. Pretty Mary K was first.

  • weird! so...he wrote pretty mary k to this tune...then changed the lyrics but kept the tune? cuz on New Moon, this is exactly how pretty mary k goes...i'm confused...

  • ...came out after pretty mary k huh? ...hum..

  • Yep, in 2001.

  • 2001 (its Freud' assistant from swaddy) and yeah his voice was like that from drugs i think cause yeah his voice sounded like that for awhile 2001/2002 then i sort of half reverted in 03 to more normal elliott voice

  • I love how this song, like so many of his songs, almost begins to sound more light hearted (melodically I mean) before returning to the start of the verse, at which point it becomes somber (that great semi-disturbing melancholy somberness of his) in emotional tone again.

  • love this pic!

    miss you, elliott!

    xo

  • Here is the comment I accidently deleted.

"when did elliot do this and where is it from? the high pitch vocals kinda dont sound like him."

  • Oops, sorry, I deleted your comment by mistake when I was trying to reply. This song came out after Pretty Mary K. I'd have to do some checking for a date.
