yes their marching style makes them look very much like a mass of mindless robots. but I don't think they are any more robotic than american, russian, or other mindless mass.
Where lots of people see mindlessness, though, I see form, discipline & coordination (ideal qualities/virtues for soldiers, I think). I dunno why people fear that so much but I respect it at the very least.. because what they're doing isn't easy & it doesn't really reflect anything about how they individually think, other than that they're tough enough & balanced enough to do this & make it look good, modern... & without impaling each other, even if there's a banana peel on the walkway :D.
That's true.. but that's another thing soldiers are supposed to be :D.
Fortunately for everyone in their immediate vicinity, I guess, the Chinese refrain (concurrently) from using their soldiers that way. They've instead done productive things like help in Iraq & dig their own people out of the Earthquake devastated regions of China, along with doing other UN leg work.
And it's for those types of applications that it's good to have good soldiers for the job.
That's why governments build remote controlled bombs, because individuals are less and less willing to obey without question. Especially when the politicians who declare acts of war have questionable motives and morals.
Read about the The Enlightenment, The Age of Reason and the emancipation of the individual.

A thing can be more than one thing at once.
Of course they are coordinated, disciplined, and quite beautiful. They are supposed to be.
They are also mindless killing machines.
And when you turn disciplined mindless killing machines loose, you want to make sure their cause is just.
Otherwise the result is not beautiful. Look at Iraq.

individuality has no room in any army.

maniac62 is correct.
Individuality has no place in any army.
That's why governments build remote controlled bombs, because individuals are less and less willing to obey without question. Especially when the politicians who declare acts of war have questionable motives and morals.
Read about the The Enlightenment, The Age of Reason and the emancipation of the individual.
But be careful, they are dangerous ideas...
Peace.
