is this still under development or has it been shut down? if its still going does anyone know when the 3D combat thing is going to be up and running? cheers
@WahookaTheGoblinKing This is an open-source project - It's a community effort - There are no companies behind this. I personally really love this game!
@WahookaTheGoblinKing If you have any specific suggestions for how to make FreeOrion's interface look nicer, please post them on the FreeOrion forums.
@WahookaTheGoblinK I agree: MOO II graphics were cool because you got to see your people and MOO III graphics were whack because you are largely alienated from them. Very simple.
One of the major differenced between free orion and nexus 2 is that free orion can be played. Nexus 2, last video from 2006, doesn't even have a release date.
By current technology I am not saying we have a star ship that can do this. What I am saying is that with conventional physics and with enough money the nearest star is reachable in a human lifetime. It would require some effort to put together the science and technologies that're out there, but I believe it can be done.
@gukonni i made a calculation and it'll take 18000 years with max speed to get to the nearest star with the fastest probe not ship, and these don't have engine, they are accelerated with the help of the sun so pretty much no way even if you'd be supreme leader of humanity and you'd have all the money in the world.
@Lugia3210 with ion drives it is even slower. it'd take about 81k years though they are more efficient from the fuel point of view but that's about it. but yeah our propulsion is far from being viable for the stars.
We can travle between star systems with nuclear star ships possibly someday using some kind of anti-matter fuel. There's no need for wormholes. I see nothing wrong with traveling to star systems as time in most of the 4X games isn't explained. 1 turn is equal to how much time? Usually doesn't say so....
We could reach Alpha Centauri in a human lifetime with current technology.
I'm sort of confused with the game, just downloaded it today. not sure if it's a glitch or im just not playing right but 30 turns in and i havent even been able to build one colony ship. It says 10 turns @ 11pp but i have 15pp and it says 100 turns?
The turn-off with space 4X games is when it is too far from what we know from astrophysics. From what I can understand, you have to travel through wormholes to explore new star system. Since there is yet no sign of wormholes between stars in reality and since we already have the capability to detect planets on very far away stars (even in Andromeda), I find it hard to suspend disbelief.
So wait! Their still working on it, and stuff like that? I can't wait, I just found my old Master of Orion game, and I've been playing it ever since xD
Is the project still under development ? Although this video is from May 30th, I only found forum posts dating back to 2008-2009 at most. Just understood how to play, I still don't understand what every technology does but it's very interesting. A bit slow though if you don't have the right planets from the start :)
@hashkenhabib What forum are you looking at? The forum at the official website (see link in channel profile) has posts from a few hours ago. The latest SVN commits are a day or two old.
Maybe able to be equal or even better to Moo2, but those guys developing it should get backup from like 20 people to finish it within the next 2 years...!
@qwxp437 If you know 20 C++ and Python programmers, artists and designers / content creators / writers with an interest in 4X space empire / exploration games, we can probably find something for them to work on.
@freeorionorg I am a content creator, technical writer, and one-time programmer (with knowledge of, but no interest in, C++) interested in learning Python. U can be reached at (user id @ gmail) and would love direction, as to where's a good place to start. Thanks! ~AZ~
@buzzaz Do you mean direction for helping with FreeOrion? Check the forums or How to Help page linked off the freeorion . org website main page. Or do you mean direction about learning Python? Check out the Python website or google for Python tutorials.
@Maskawanian In principle, yes, but in practice, probably not. There are too many dependencies and too little interest / need. Presumably you should be able to run the 32 bit version, anyway...
@xMAC94x The installers or packages we provide for Win32, Linux and OSX should be fairly easy to use, unless something's gone wrong. It's not necessary to compile from source just to try it out. What problems are you having installing FreeOrion? You might want to post on the FreeOrion forums to ask for support.
thanks ,but unfortunately i can't register on freeorion . org / forum because he does not allow my e-mail adress (web . de). I tried 4 difficult adresses.
my problem is that i can't save / load the game or go to options.
@xMAC94x I've (hopefully) unbanned web . de email addresses from the freeorion forums. They were banned due to large numbers of spam registrations. Could you try again?
If you're getting crashes trying to save / load or go into options, that sounds like a known issue with file pathes on Windows with non-latin characters in Windows user's folder name (where FreeOrion attempts to read / write configuration and save files). There's no fix available, but a different user name might work.
@elfirebrand Many hours (years) of volunteer work to create original code, content, and art, which is released under "free" licences and hosted for download at not cost.
It's been developed for so long now but still you're active :) You Guys do a great job, THANKS a lot!!! I'm really looking forward playing the full version of the game once =)

i think the graphics are good aswell as the interface but does anyone know how long untill the 3-d combat thing is released??
mcturky 3 weeks ago
I don't want to whine, but the graphics here has none of the charm of original MOO(2), instead it looks like cheap themeless Qt application :<.
But 3D part is very nice.

Master of Orion 4 should be like Moo2 with better graphics. The combat should have this level of detail and graphics I believe.
All I have seen so far is 1990's level game standard
Take a look at the Nexus 2 trailer to see what you should be aiming for in the combat section.

@vanhell0 It takes about 100-200 years to reach Alpha Centari A with conventional ion drives.
Our propulsion sucks.

I'm playing Star Lords (Moo 0) right now. But FreeOrion looks fun. I got Galactic Civilizations on my desk.
