I love Daphne's Mimi. Rosario and Renee made the character more "modern" and definitely made the song more likable, but Daphne IS Mimi. Everything Mimi is supposed to be/represented. Mimi is NINETEEN and a drug addict, she's not as glamorous as some people like to view her. And this song definitely represents that, in my opinion. Plus, this is without modern vocal editing.

My favorite Mimi along with Renee. Not only does she genuinely sound like a heorine addict, but she's bad on the bars, carrys the emotions, and exercises her voice. Rosario's acting was great, but she was heavily aided by autotunes.
The audience clearly love Daphne. No wonder she was nominated for the Tony.
Just because something is the original or came earlier doesn't mean it's the best. I'm appreciative of Daphne for creating the role, but she doesn't do it the justice that other girls have (including and especially Rosario, who gave Mimi a great personality). I don't run Windows '98 and think it's amazing because it came before XP, Vista, or 7. All that matters is that it's improved. The role of Mimi has grown too far for Daphne's Mimi to keep up with.

You guys realize it's a whole different skill set, right? That when Rosario was singing the song, she was unmoving in front of a microphone in a studio. When she performed it in the film she was lip-synching and you're hearing studio-quality vocals. As opposed to Rubin-Vega who is in constant motion, having to control her breathing while doing dance moves, and you're hearing it under less than optimal audio conditions. It's absurd to compare, much less denigrate her performance.
I think it's stupid how people will make low ratings on comments simply because they disagree. Comparing to this version, Rosario's is so much better. Daphne's howl on the word "out" is much MUCH too shrill. It's supposed to be a howl, not a shriek, which is what this video sounds like, maybe it was the accoustics when it was recorded. It's also a lot easier to hear Mimi's defiance in Rosario's voice.
I agree that people are very childish with their 'thumbs downs'. But I disagree that Rosario is a better singer. She has a good, but not great voice. Certainly not strong enough for the stage. And her performance was recorded and polished up by producers, not live, like Daphne's. But hey. Apples and oranges. I eat both :)
but you have to remember: this is the LIVE show. in the movie, they recorded it all in the studio (where she could mess up), and then Rosario lipsinged it while she danced. but with Daphne, she has to sing AND dance at the same time. she had so much more worries then Rose: she has to make sure her breathings right, she has to be loud enough for everyone to hear, and she has to NOT MESS UP. therefore, you can't compare the two really, since they were preforming in completely different settings

There is a reason why the director of each production of this show chose each character. Had this show been cast in 2000's, Rosario woulda gotten the part. The point is, Daphne was the BEST DAMN actress to play Mimi at the time. Rosario was the best actress to play Mimi at the filming of the movie, and so one and so forth. (just my opinion)
i just feel that rosario was the best choice for the movie because she could play all of mimi's emotions very subtly, which is perfect for movies, but not enough for the stage.
Daphne (and the rest of the OBC) originated the character(s) for the stage. Everyone else since is imitating, with their own twist on it. Good, but not the same thing. I like her raw edge. She IS Mimi.

I agree that Daphne IS Mimi.....The fact that Jonathan picked her just makes her special, however, I am not a fan of hers. My favorite Mimi is Lexi Lawson. She danced all around on the dangerous stage and sounded amazing because she truly just is a better singer. But, the fact that Jonathan picked Daphne really does make her THE Mimi.

To me, her voice stylistically matches the time period the best of any of the Mimi's I've heard. Not that it matters too much, but it does certainly seem to add to the role a little.
I think Daphne made a GREAT Mimi. Her character shined through and made the standard for the Mimi attitude, which has yet to be met. Her voice may not be the "best," but she is a phenomenal performer.
This will always be my favorite Mimi people always say her voice is crap, but I love her voice for Mimi its got a wonderful edge to it that the character needs I mean think about it shes a drug addicted stripper with HIV in New York City during the early to mid 90's (not 89 like in the fuckin' movie hello Thelma and Louise came out in the 90's so the play has to be set after that since Angel makes reference to it)

She had personally worked with Jonathon Larson and he chose her, not Rosario Dawson [even though she was like... 10?] Some of the music in RENT is written specifically for people in the original cast. If Jonathon thought that she couldn't sing, she would have never been chosen as Mimi, or the song would have been changed.

I also loved Lexi as Mimi - I saw her in NJ and was so bummed when I got to Washington D.C. & Caren Tackett understudied. But she was really good. Hopefully Lexi will be onstage in Schenectady.

My favorite Mimi along with Renee. Not only does she genuinely sound like a heorine addict, but she's bad on the bars, carrys the emotions, and exercises her voice. Rosario's acting was great, but she was heavily aided by autotunes.
The audience clearly love Daphne. No wonder she was nominated for the Tony.

Just because something is the original or came earlier doesn't mean it's the best. I'm appreciative of Daphne for creating the role, but she doesn't do it the justice that other girls have (including and especially Rosario, who gave Mimi a great personality). I don't run Windows '98 and think it's amazing because it came before XP, Vista, or 7. All that matters is that it's improved. The role of Mimi has grown too far for Daphne's Mimi to keep up with.

You guys realize it's a whole different skill set, right? That when Rosario was singing the song, she was unmoving in front of a microphone in a studio. When she performed it in the film she was lip-synching and you're hearing studio-quality vocals. As opposed to Rubin-Vega who is in constant motion, having to control her breathing while doing dance moves, and you're hearing it under less than optimal audio conditions. It's absurd to compare, much less denigrate her performance.

I think it's stupid how people will make low ratings on comments simply because they disagree. Comparing to this version, Rosario's is so much better. Daphne's howl on the word "out" is much MUCH too shrill. It's supposed to be a howl, not a shriek, which is what this video sounds like, maybe it was the accoustics when it was recorded. It's also a lot easier to hear Mimi's defiance in Rosario's voice.

I agree that people are very childish with their 'thumbs downs'. But I disagree that Rosario is a better singer. She has a good, but not great voice. Certainly not strong enough for the stage. And her performance was recorded and polished up by producers, not live, like Daphne's. But hey. Apples and oranges. I eat both :)

but you have to remember: this is the LIVE show. in the movie, they recorded it all in the studio (where she could mess up), and then Rosario lipsinged it while she danced. but with Daphne, she has to sing AND dance at the same time. she had so much more worries then Rose: she has to make sure her breathings right, she has to be loud enough for everyone to hear, and she has to NOT MESS UP. therefore, you can't compare the two really, since they were preforming in completely different settings

There is a reason why the director of each production of this show chose each character. Had this show been cast in 2000's, Rosario woulda gotten the part. The point is, Daphne was the BEST DAMN actress to play Mimi at the time. Rosario was the best actress to play Mimi at the filming of the movie, and so one and so forth. (just my opinion)

Daphne (and the rest of the OBC) originated the character(s) for the stage. Everyone else since is imitating, with their own twist on it. Good, but not the same thing. I like her raw edge. She IS Mimi.

ok i take back what i said about daphne's age. i just watched her sing seasons of love on the Rent filmed live on broadway. I have to say she looks very young about 25 i say she could pass for but she doesn't look 19. Now question 2 all who has seen the musical on broadway. Like i keep saying she is fantastic but in 1996 she was young and looked it but the other OBcast members don't look very different from 1996 but i find that daphne does. She could never past 4 19. When are people going to learn that there is a huge difference between live performance and film? Daphne actually had to perform the song night after night with demanding choreography. Rosario just stood in a studio, sang into a mic, and barely belted. You cannot claim that one is better than the other when the conditions under which they each sang the song are totally different. I respect you not liking Daphne as much as Rosario, but your statement about her not singing the song right, was, well, wrong. She had personally worked with Jonathon Larson and he chose her, not Rosario Dawson [even though she was like... 10?] Some of the music in RENT is written specifically for people in the original cast. If Jonathon thought that she couldn't sing, she would have never been chosen as Mimi, or the song would have been changed.

It depends what you are talking about. Rosario's voice is plain, because she's not a professional singer, but her acting is great. Daphne is exactly the opposite.

i must say that she's not my favourite vocalist, not even top5, but to see her perform is pure ecstacy; she's amazing.

As far as I know (and I could be wrong, but I've heard this a lot), Rosario's voice was digitally fixed for the movie. She was good, but it wasn't really her singing so I don't like her as much as I could've. It doesn't seem as genuine (I know, I'm kinda a snob. Sorry!).
