@ididcramsmom Brain has tons more chops than Herb and a better feeling for the funk and go go. Herb is alright...but...well. ... Watch Brain's video and you'll see how much technique he has and how much he's groovin.
@gleventhal So is Brain. Have you ever seen his instructional video. Herb couldn't do half that go-go stuff. Not to even mention the ostinato or flat out chops. Brain has it all. Herb is more of a self-taught player. He's good...but not as good as Brain. Shouldn't compare really, but Brain has more knowledge and it shows in his playing.
@madchops82 I have seen both of them play, and when Herb plays a beat, it has more dynamics, better groove, and his drums just sound better.. not to mention there are more intricacies.. Have you heard Herb on the ADD albums? I am not super familiar with all of Brains playing, but I have seen him play with primus, and to me he sounds much less pro than Herb. I went to a music conservatory for Bass, I know a lot of stuff, but there are self taught bassists who play much better than me.
I'm so glad to find theres people who appreciate Brain for what he does. He gets dissed pretty hard by the majority of Primus fans. Him and herb are completely different drummers. It comes down to taste. Personally Brain by a mile. Love the groove and punch. He can just groove on a beat that's completely basic and repetitive with minimal variation and I would still prefer to listen to that than some clusterfuck of fills. You need something simple to compliment the rest of Primus. Brain owns.
Brain is a fucking badass, no two ways about that. He kills, fuckin' nails and annihilates every song he's featured on. I love Herb too, but the two are so killer at what they do it's impossible to pick favorites.
Jay Lane is a nice in-between of these two cats, seeing him with Primus in a fortnight!
don't bash herb... he really created a unique style and sound with primus, totally new approach to double bass, known to be admired by steve smith (!!!)
but nowdays as a drummer i am more influenced by brains rock solid bonham-type grooves
somewhat, when they get funky. I would say Chad Smith and Brain are both very underrated as far as what youtube kiddies think of them watching a few videos on here. Chad Smith has a lot of skill outside of RHCP, loads of different chops, as well as Brain.

NONE of this was done by Brain. He's like a really cool private teacher that can play well. But has absolutely no idea how to run a clinic.
I believe you are right about groove, nonetheless, I do not believe He's a proper teacher, playing and fooling around does not really mean "teaching", although he definitely has got a nice groove.
Tim Alexander has no personality and it shows in his playing, solid but no flare.... you put him on a 4 piece kit and 2 cymbals he won't know what to do.... way too mechanical. Brain is all about groove and thats what counts -no matter what he's playing on.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Tim does actually play a 4 piece kit and holds it pretty well!
Comparing both drummers is pretty useless. Both have their own strong feeling. I really disliked the entire Brain era with Primus, I started to appriciate him with El Stew!
But I still think their's more to learn about in Tim's playing!
@samk26 tim herbs playing lacks flair?!?!....i couldnt disagree more.....brain is awesome but tim herb is easily one of the more inventive and skilled drummers of our time....i also dont wanna get into whos better...there both amazing...but saying tim herb has no personality and his playing feels mechanical is just wrong
@samk26 lol that comment suck balls XD tim is technically 1000000000 time better than brain , who care of the personality , he's a drumming beast ! he also 1000000 more solid than Brian. i don't know how he is out of primus but in primus i prefer tim . ''Brain is all about groove and thats what counts'' man he's not groovin' that much , he's always playing the same rythm in 4/4. such a good drummer tought but Tim beat him .
@samk26 oh come on dont simplify! i love brain but for example jon the fisherman, my name is mud, too many puppies shows Tim can groove without alot of drums. Plus his middle name is flare.
@samk26 to express urself through a drumkit is a fukin hard thing. but they can both do it. they r both fukin good drummers. u obviously prefer brain but u cant put someone equaly as good down to make your favourite seem better. how tha fuk can u say that tim dont have flare, stop readin this reply and look at john the fisherman. look at jerry was a race car driver, look at tommy the cat! how tha fuk is that mechanical they are both fukin good and just cuz u like brain better, dont say tims shit

he's an average drummer, most drummers can"groove"haha, that's their job, herb however can"groove"and make it interesting with his technical capability it 's a fuckin poor excuse to use"groove"as a substitute for for ability.
i grew up watching brain play a set w/ Limbomaniacs and then Tim/Herb with Primus and every night i'd go home scratching my head asking who was the better drummer. i've decided there is no correct answer. just a matter of taste. on top of being a world-class drummer, Brain's also one helluva guy, sharing the knowledge with the kids of Youth Movement Records.

tim and brain are completely different.
brain is way more hip-hop, and listen to this, plays more singles and doesn't fuck with ostinatos as much.
tim on the other hand is an excellent melodic drummer, original, and a more technical drummer.
brain would get a studio job over tim any day. tim's ideas are way less conventional, and very psychedellic.
