@recto89 The simplest answer is they were using KABC's crew for live shots. Some stations usually don't send their own camera and sound men outside their market for big assignments. They can just use another station (or sometimes network) crew to file packages and do live shots. All the reporter needs to bring is the mic flag. This wasn't the case in this video.
@nynewsguy7 I see this all the time when the KGO Reporter when they are in SoCal they use the KABC Crew and the KABC mic. Look at Nanette Miranda at KGO she does reports in Sacramento and she would use the KGO crew to do reports but sometimes she would use the KABC 7 pin and Mic flags to do her reports.
@recto89 I see Nanette Miranda in Sacramento files reports for three ABC O&O's and ABC News' affiliate service called Newsone. She would file three different, but same, live intros and outro using three different mic flags (KABC, KFSN, and KGO). The fourth one would be the generic close. Nanette Miranda, ABC News, Sacramento.
Notice that in saying his goodbyes to Tom, Roger Grimsby snuck a jab at the management...which has me wondering if somebody remembered that when Roger was canned two years later.
Probably one of the few. Snyder did do a tribute to Grimsby on his "Late Late Show" several days after the former "EWN" anchor died in 1995. Rog' also had respect for a few reporter colleagues, which oftentimes they didn't find out until, say, after they got into tiffs with news directors over a story they covered.
Whatever happened to the contributor PHILLYMediaWATCH? I liked his contrib's of NYC-related TV, including the Bill Beutel/Sunday Night Movie clips of 1987.
Ira Joe Fisher is one of my favorites. But the amazing thing in this video is that I didn't know Tom Synder did the News on WABC after his legendary "Tomorrow" show. I enjoyed the show he did in the 90's too. Synder is soley missed. R.I.P.
I remember when Ira Joe Fisher did weather for Channel 12 WKRC in Cincinnati in the late 80s, writing backwards on the glass... he even did the narration for the Wild Animal Habitat Monorail ride at Kings Island in 1988.
@CoastersNSich And I remember Ira Joe back in Spokane Washington with KHQ in the 70's. It is where he perfected his "backwards writing" that he has become famous for.
wow.... I was just blown away at that weather forecast. Granted I was about a year old when this was broadcast, but I just can't believe how primitive weather forecasting was back then.
I was 12 at the time and it seems primitive now of course. But that's how it was then. In 84 CDs had barely hit the marketplace and cable television was still in it's infancy. Technology has grown in such leaps and bounds in the past 15 years it's ridiculous. When I was a little kid we had no cable, we still had rotary phones and record players, the same things my grandparents used. Now I live in a world in which I don't fully understand where there's a new piece of technology every 6 months.
Ira Joe Fisher is now the meteorologist for The Saturday Early Show. He also works at CBS as a voiceover artist for The Early Show and CBS Morning News.
There was a guy here on Youtube whos name I think was TVNewsman. He had some of the best stuff. He was particularly knowledgable about the NY area news shows. as of about 2 months ago he and his stuff was all gone from youtube. Anyone know what happened to him?
This farewell broadcast occurred on Friday, August 17th, 1984... the Friday *before* the Monday, August 20th open of the GOP Convention in Dallas. However, it was The NY Times of Monday August 20th which carried an Associated Press wire story: "Tom Snyder Leaving WABC", stating Snyder's two-year contract would be ending Tuesday, September 18th. (Give me your email address and I will gladly send you the wire story.)
The 1984 WCBS clip with Rolland Smith and Jim Jensen must've been taken from this same day, as the 6PM news opened with a similar tax story about Geraldine Ferraro and her husband, as reported by Mr. Jensen
I thought the Jensen/Smith clip was from Monday, Aug. 13, 1984 . . . Mr. Smith had just come back from an apparent vacation or something, that was a clue.
Damn, I wanted to hear the bit on how to keep my cat from turning into a ravenous killer

who is that anchor next to Tom Snyder?
palmbch561 8 months ago
@palmbch561 - Oh, that was Tracy Egan. Who, when last heard from, was a reporter/anchor in Albany, NY.

Last part of this clip is about Geraldine Ferraro and her husband's tax matters.
Today, it has been announced that Ms. Ferraro passed into eternity at age 75.

From 0:24 to 0:31... the late, great Lynn Redgrave, who just passed away Sunday the 2nd. Bless her soul.

I guess Tom Snyder was probably the only other member of the Eyewitness News that Roger Grimsby got along well with.

Entertainment Tonight came on Ch 7 in the 8os...WOW? I know in Detroit ET is still on at 7:30pm on WXYZ
, but all those ABC O&O have Wheel/Jeopardy!
applesauce2100 2 years ago
Even though it's not an ABC O-and-O for the last 25 years or so, WKBW here in Buffalo has Wheel(7PM) and Jeopardy!(7:30PM)
ET is part of the Insider/ET combo at that same time on WGRZ.

KGO ran with ET in the 1980's too.

Ira Joe's weather was his gimmick. He wrote backwards on a glass screen, wasn't common technique.

Tom Snyder switched coasts and ABC Stations. He would go on to host a 3:30pm show on KABC-TV for two years before Oprah came in.
