why both arms seem to be right arms? i read the author meant the dragon on the right forearm and the tiger on the left, but doesnt seem to fit asian mithology
David Carradine actually went to the Shaolin temple in China "(for a Discovery Channel special) and when he told the temple abbot that he had played a Shaolin monk on TV the abbot was like "WTF?!
this show was created by Bruce Lee about a Chinese guy. the country wasn't going to watch Bruce lee play as the Chinese main character, but will to watch a white guy plays a chinese guy....I love it how every episode rednecks keeps calling a white guy China man. Got nothing against david Caridine RIP, but fuck redneck usa!
@BBradshawProductions Ed Spelman wrote Kung Fu in 1966, a new yorker who was studying kung fu at the time. He dreamed about being the only caucasian allowed into the shaolin monastery. So he wrote the script in 1966 It found it way eventualy into Warner Brothers. Where it sat there for like 6 years. Jerry Thorpe found the script and was the executive producer and creator of Kung Fu series.
@daisydooker This show was Bruce Lee's idea....he was suppose to star in it, but they said he was too Chinese....they thought dat the country wasn't gonna watch the show if a Chinese person was the main character.....
A very enjoyable show. Those who never saw it, tend to think it was just TV's version of the Chinese chop-socky flicks that were very popular in the mid 70's. Actually, martial arts activity was only a small part of each episode. The scripts contained a good deal of philosophy too.
The problem with the opening sequence (during the 1st season) was that it gave the false impression (to those who did not see the pilot episode) that Caine left the Shaolin monastery because he was finally able to snatch the pebble from Master Kan's hand. Actually, he was a fugitive (having killed the Chinese emperor's nephew). I think the opening sequence should have established this central fact. Incorporating Caine's confession to Kan and and showing Master Po's death would have better.
@1bol1 He stole nothing. Though Bruce Lee was the obvious choice in terms of his Brilliant talent, I personally can't imagine him portraying the Calm inner economy of the Characters Buddhist nature as well as Carradine did.
Well, that sure was incentive for the priest trainees to complete their training. Their reward was they got to burn themselves on a pot of hot coals!!
@trwent haha funny point of view .. :P however .. in a deep meaning and strong sense behind the word lines of this story , the reward would be actually to have the key and the tools to a succesful calm and happy life
I wonder how many people could claim that as a reward ..
Well hell yes he got it from this show with out a doubt to close to say that it wasnt I mean if I wanted to do it and do it on guitar then it would sound like the song for the love of god lets b4real now steve took the basic to the song and just expanded it there are a few guitar players who have been influnced by a song or a certain rythum pattern and wrote with it..
true Lloyd - and it's especially egregious here, because if you listen to the studio version of For the Love of God - he basically plays the Kung Fu melody over and over. Sure you can be influenced by a song or other patterns - and one cannot copyright a chord progression. But you can copyright a melody and you can't take that without repercussions.
The character was originally written to be played by bruce lee not david carradine. Not to mention skills in art fighting which carradine was far away to be considered an expert. This was the result of discrimination.
The whole concept of "Kung Fu" was thought up by Bruce Lee. At the last minute the network decided that an Asian Looking Asian was too much for the American public.
Is that Keith Carradine playing the younger Caine/
This is true. But looking back at it now, I think Carradine was a better choice to play a humble monk. I always thought Bruce Lee would have made a better villain than a hero. He was so intense and deadly fast. As far as the skill level goes, there was probably only about a minute at most in each episode of actual fighting. It was more about the writing and acting. So I don't think it was that much of an issue. Obviously, Lee's skills were second to none.

This was indeed Bruce Lee's idea, concept and creation but it was deemed not "appropriate" back in those days to have a non-white lead actor or as Bruce was told, "america is not ready for an Asian hero" (some might say, nothing much has changed since then), hence David got the part!
Great old TV series. David carradine RIP. Incidently, in this video intro to the show, the second appearance of the young Caine in the white (between showing the youngest boy dressed in black and just before you see David at the end) is David's brother, Keith Carradine who appeared in the flashbacks of young Caine.
Wow! Back in the good old days the intro's were as much fun to watch as the shows themselves. Ahhhhh..... such good times before "reality t.v." came along.

I am so sad you're gone and I'll always remember you as the spiritual icon on "Kung Fu" deftly dodging those lances thrown at you from other students. R.I.P.!!!
I enjoyed this series as a child, and always enjoyed David Carradine's acting in whatever he was in. I've also got his album 'Grasshopper' which showed him to be a sensitive musician and good singer too, but was a bit too diverse for most, worth getting if you can find a copy. Rest in peace, Mr. Carradine.
Carradine's Kung Fu character was the epitome of cool when I was a kid. After the Saturday night showing, we were all practicing Kung Fu moves in the playground on Monday morning.
Mystic philosophy and a few punch-ups. What a program! RIP Dave !

RIP Dave !

The intro song sounds a little bit like
"For The Love of God" by Steve Vai.
