  • i still always have to make an L or pretending im holding a pencil to know my right from left.

  • 3:32 is almost the same story for me but it was my left hand, and it was a knife

  • Has Hank got dyslexia or maybe ADHD?

The left and right confusion sounds like my dyslexia.

But because of how hyper he is, I picture ADHD/ADD.

  • did you know that most stutters are caused by people that are left handed being forced to write with their right hand?

  • CLASSIC Dan 3.0

  • Neither I nor any of my friends know our rights and lefts. We're 15.

  • I learned my right and left from Blue's Clues, because when one holds their left hand up with the thumb out, it makes an L for Left!! I still have to check sometimes, though...

  • Not to be rude, but which learning disability? This is not an insult because I have A.D.D and rather enjoy being distracted.

  • whoha! nerdfighters!

  • My mom was beat for being left handed

  • mine's os from 2006. first MBP i edit my vids on it

  • I'm a left handed ambidextrous person. I could write with both hands when I was younger, they made me choose and went for left, but I do many other things between the two, such as cutting with scissors, bowling, batting, etc.

  • I am sixteen and struggle with my lefts and rights. There is absolutely no good reason for this.

  • @CaptainLiv ME TOO!

  • I couldn't tell my right from left until I cut my right hand as a kid, as well! It doesn't hurt any more, but there's still a huge scar, and I still have to check.

  • i know my right from my left because my right eye is practically blind while my left is half-passable.

Which is also why when i wear contacts i am useless at giving directions...

  • I heard a very interesting story about rights and lefts. There is a language (I don't know where), a not very well know language, that doesn't have a word for right or left. So the people who speak it, instead of right of left directions just use north south east and west directions, and because of this have really super awesome sense of direction, because they always have to know which direction is north to give directions.

It's really cool that they both have color names. :)

  • a constantly hurting scar on one of your hands that tell you which is left and which is right?

i have that too. in 09 i had gotten my left hand trapped under a two ton SUV and have permanent nerve damage. But this helps, i can now tell my right from left.

    DFTBA

  • what learning disability? i have a couple so it would be cool to compair notes :P

  • i know my right from left because I write with my left, and its a lot stronger and less awkward than my right.

  • Oh, my...Dan Brown's such a geek! xD And here I was thinking he was one of those serious authors who'd...well, I don't know, give you The Death Glare if you disturbed them while at work....

I can never take him seriously now. Like, never.

  • @StudentCommunity Not the author of the DaVinci code. The vlogger

  • This is probably the first Vlogbrothers video I ever watched. Consequently, this is the video that changed my life.

  • Would said condition be Dyspraxia? I ask because I'm Dyspraxic, 23 and I still don't know my left from my right.

  • That is the absolute worst way to learn left from right.

  • I learned right from left the same way! When I was a child I cut my right writst, which left a prominent lifelong scar. I remember several times in grade school surreptiously looking at my wrists when asked which direction was right or left. I almost felt like I was cheating. BTW, many years ago, they did that same type of rough correction for left handers here in this country, and not just in parochial schools. They only had right-handed desks (a chair with a writing surface on the right side).

  • Dear Hank,

I'm 18-years-old and I have problems remembering right from left. As far as I am aware I don't have a mental illness that causes this (mostly cause the only one I'm aware of is dyslexia(sp?) which my mom insists I don't have because I can read perfectly fine)

Anyway, the fact I have problems with left+right is more so directional then my hands, though, if I'm not doing something like useing a Mouse or a Pen(cile) I do have to stop and think about which is my left(or right) hand.....

  • did he just say Czechoslovakia? Hank I love you but if you said something like this to somebody from Czech or Slovakia, they would punch you :D

  • @Karky1000 Indeed they would not. At the time Hank had that teacher, it WAS Czechoslovakia, and therefore that teacher could say she was from there, and probably still does rather than saying that she's from the Czech Republic or Slovakia.

  • My last name is Csizmadia, just like Hank's lefty-forced-to-be-righty teacher, how small is this world?!

  • I have a scar on my right middle finger, and the only way i can figure out right from left is to rub my Index finger across the top of my middle finger.. on both hands.. and i know that the one with the scar is the right one. I'm 21 years old...

also i had a form of MS, and now my left arm doesn't work right... so i know its my left side.. lol.. it also hurts.. and aches.. every single.. freakign day... i hates it...

  • you know who else is named dan? my uncle

  • Oh my GOD! I have the exact same technique! I got a really deep deep cut from a nail that wasn't properly hammered, and it created a huge scar on my right hand! That's how I tell which one's my right and which one's my left! :D

  • @steampunkfangirl I think he has dyslexia but thats only speculation because that does effect sense of left and right. In my experience doesn't effect intellect just some writing skills like spelling and early reading skills. But then again I have no idea if he is or not?

  • I only learnt left from right a few months ago when I burned my right hand and gained a scar.

  • Anyone watching this should really start watchig Dan's new delicious steak videos. they are really good I promise.

  • If you feel the pain in your hand all the time, can you really call it pain?

  • learning disability???????? hank, you have a PHD in BIOCHEMISTRY!!!!!!!!

did the disability disappear? did you get rid of it? are you so freakishly smart or study so freakishly hard that you are able to cope with it?????

    does anyone know??????

    just curious :)

  • now you have to learn the differences between right, stage right, and house right.

  • It used to take me about 30 seconds to figure out which was left and right, until I realized that I had this OCD thing where I could NOT touch anything with my right pinkie. If I did, I'd have to touch that same object one at a time with the rest of my fingers. To check which is which, I'd twitch one pinkie then the other and whichever feels freaked out is the right one :P

  • Yay for Hob Nob!!! 0:27

  • For some reason Dan always makes me think of Alice in Wonderland...

  • Dude, I broke my right arm when I was little and now I have a constant pain in my right arm and that is how I learned my right from left!

  • My great grandfather was left handed. When my aunt would work with him building things he would tell her she was using the wrong hand so now she is left handed too.

  • Hank, don't worry. My best friend in high school couldn't tell left from right until she was...sixteen. Or maybe it was fifteen. Nonetheless, our freshman year at band camp was a little difficult for her. But she was still pretty cool.

  • Didn't know left from right until the age of 9 "because of a learning disability" ... I'm sure plenty of people don't know left from right until the age of 9 simply because children are a bit dim lol

  • @marquoth I had the same disability. I didn't figure it out until I was twelve. And I still have to think about it.

Hank's hand pain is his device that he uses to remember. I have one too. Most people with this disability do. In fact, Einstein had this disability.

  • @WhatsBliss I didn't mean to imply it's not real. I just meant that I wouldn't have thought getting left and right muddled when you're still so young was an obvious sign of it. At twelve, I'd have just blamed that on being little. I guess that's what makes this sort of thing hard to spot early, though - it can be easy (particularly if you're not a specialist) to write things off as not being significant.

  • Dan's too amazing to NOT have a girlfriend |D

  • Funny how people can master language at the average age of 3 years old, but yet, left and right is some sort of trouble... Really, I'm not dissin' anyone here, just wondering what sort of cognitive function is implied here that makes it harder to learn left from right. Even I still have trouble with this, but why ? What's so goddamn hard about it ?

  • I have a scar on my right hand, it is honestly the only way I can tell left from right

  • You know who else had a bad right hand? Dumbledore.

  • im watching the 2007 macbook that antique computer? yeah im watching this video on one :)

  • Hank and I have the same way to tell right and left apart! Thanks Hank for making me and my nerve-damaged hip in some way more awesome!

  • Dear Dan,

I wish I had your skills.

    Dear Hank,

I wish I could speak with that voice XD

    That is all.

    Love,

    Rini

  • Pogopogopogobaaaaaaaat

  • Brother from a mother with the last bame of a another color?

  • I think the Dan and I have the same computer!

  • I didn't learn my left from right until I was 14. I'm 19 now, and I still have to think about it. I don't have a learning disability, I'm just not good at remembering left and right. D:

  • Learning disability ? LOL I didn't learn which is right or left until I was 13 :D:D

  • I...was gunna point out that I have the same learning disability...until I remembered that they recently diagnosed me with something different ;_;. Oh well.

  • I have that exact same computer. Same model. Same year. Same color. Using it right now:)

  • I poked a pencil into my right hand on accident when I was little. To this day I have a little black spot there, so I used to look at my hand to know which was right and which was left.

  • I have an axe scar on my right hand. It didnt do nerve damage, but it's hard to miss

  • I always rub my index ringer against my middle finger, where this little callous is, from how I hold my pencil, whenever I need to know right from left.

Or I kind of shake my left hand, since everything always in the the history of ever goes left to right.

  • I'm left-handed!

I can't tell my left and right and I'm 15!

My friends make fun of me because I get excited when I see other left handers. -_-

  • I used to not be able to tell right from left too. People always used to try to give me the "L" trick -- except I always forgot which way the 'L' went. I remained confused until my sister told me that I WRITE with my RIGHT hand. To this day I always have to think about which hand my dominant hand it to tell right from left. (im 17)

  • I'm 18, and still can't tell right from left. Suddenly I feel less bad about this.

  • I like Dan's black and white shirt.

I'm turning 19 in 13 days and I still have issues with right and left TT^TT

  • Hank, I'm not sure what learning disablity you have, but I'm 14 and i still can't tell the difference between my right and left. I know the left make the correct L but i forget which L is correct.

  • Well I play piano, so I always know my right from left :)

  • GO LEFTIES!!!

I used to put my shoes on wrong when I was little because I thought they looked like a butterfly when I wore them and butterflies are nice, and everytime someone tried to correct me it made my shoes remind me of two trains crashing into each other. That was not nice.

  • I find it kind of odd that some people cant tell from their right or left. To me my right hand feels different to my left

  • I know my left from right because my right hand is the one with two thumb nails.

  • i've been riding in a car with friends...and i told her we needed to turn left. she took both hands off the wheel, made an "L" with both hands to figure out which way to turn, and then promptly turned .....right.

  • Hank, I can't decide if you are really unlucky or really lucky.

  • Ehhhh used to be subscribed to db,,, but he got annoying rather than funny. You can disagree I don't care.

  • wow 0-0... that's an extreme way to remember which is ur right hand...

  • Missoula has its own airport?

  • It's Hank "William Shatner" Green!!

  • Putting a pillow on my head and watching a bunch of vlogbrothers videos always makes me feel significantly better after crying :) they never forget to be awesome

  • My driving instructor wrote L and R on my hands for every driving lesson because I kept turning the wrong way. Glad to know I'm not alone. :)

  • At the end of this video, I can relate. When I was young, my dad made me write right handed. Last week told me why he did it, it was because my whole family was right handed so I could be too. Also, I couldn't tell my right from left also. I burned my left hand multiple time and now I can tell my right hand to my left.

  • HOLY CRAP I JUST SENT YOU GUYS A MESSAGE ABOUT THIS AND IT KIND OF HELPS TO KNOW THAT THIS IS A COMMON VICISSITUDE.

A certain layer of calm is restored.

  • my mom was forced to write with her right hand too :(

  • i still cant tell my right from left and im... twelve *shamefullface*

  • @timeladyandshazamm97 Don't worry, I'm 13 and I still can't.

  • @timeladyandshazamm97

    *gives shame face*

  • @timeladyandshazamm97 Hehe, I'm nearly 20 and I still suck at it. Not sure if this is totally correct, but apparently it's to do with the hemispheres in your brain. So like people who find it easy usually have one hemisphere bigger than the other. People like you and me (and heaps of other people) apparently just have equally developed brain hemispheres. So, I think that's pretty awesome. :) DFTBA

  • oh my gosh... my halls wrapper has motivational phrases on it O_O

but yeah, @epicsquidy123 i still have trouble telling left from right every once in a while. i'm 18.

  • ummm i cudn't tell my left from right until I was nine and i dont have a learning disability... I think...

  • what is your learning disability?

  • you and I have the same way of telling our left from right. i broke my arm 3 years ago and have some nerve damage as well.

  • I rake over NEARLY ALL video clips that I find intrigueing SEVERAL TIMES (with ... a few exceptions). Up until this point, I've been trying to complete them in chronological order, but now it appears that I've been hit with a mountain of options. Check all that apply?: Lets see... AVOIDING PEN15 club at all costs (or look elsewhere), google verb (how true), Demon four year old (seriously doubt it). Oh brother (somewhat) lust and folly (minor infraction o.o), snookie (not laughing), dan 3.0? hmm

  • Left handed Nerdfighters FTW :D

  • Hank, is rhat learning disabilaty dislexia?

  • WooHaa

    LeftWriters!

  • Aah! I was getting all excited when you said it was Dan Brown...and then you had to say it wasn't the Dan who wrote the Da Vinci Code. :(

  • I'm rewatching some old vlogbrothers videos because I can't remember where I left off (it's been a while). Funny seeing this in the post Dan 3.0 fiasco world. At least, I feel like it has been a fiasco.

Also, HUZZAH FOR US SINISTER LEFT-HANDED PEOPLES!!!

  • I fail to see how left hamded people are possessed by the devil and secondly there was a strange 'rumour' saying that left handed people live longer. Yikes.

  • @AvengerDanXD Because the latin for left-handed is sinister.

  • It's impossible for me to do the Nerdfighter sign without getting all happy and giddy :D.

And I'm 16 and I still can't tell my right from left sometimes :(

I eat with my left hand and write with my right, but sometimes I'll pick up a pen and start writing with my left hand until I look down and realize that it looks like a 1st grader was writing. My life's the worstttt. Okay, not really, but it's still annoying.

  • @BrittanysMusicVideos

maybe you're ambidextrous! meaning both of your hands are AWESOME at writing, picking up things, eating etc.

thats really good because in test situations and you're writing heaps and your hand hurts, you could just use the other! maybe train your left hand's writing? :3

  • Well...his talents attracted me x3...Well, mostly it was his hair xD

  • XD Dan Green is an anime voice actor, most famous for Yugi from Yu-Gi-Oh! So, haha

  • I dare say that seems like a somewhat convincing although aching method to differentiate between right and left. I'm 20 and I had to rename them in order to tell them apart xD

  • After finally learning my right from my left I was put in a french immersion class. To this day I have to ask someone if right is gauche or if left is droite. French is confusing even after 9 years!*sigh*

  • i learned my left from right when i saw that my left hand made an l shspe

  • HOLY CRUD poor Hank =(

  • Lefty power!

  • AH- I didn't know left from right either until now (I'm 19) because I burned my left hand really badly and had to have a skin graft on it- YAY FOR USING TERRIBLE ACCIDENTS AS LEARNING TOOLS!

  • HOO HA IM LEFT HANDED THANKS!

  • Hank Green is, apparently, 30 years old...

WHAT?! Dude, you look like you're 20! Shock! Disbelief! Inability to comprehend!

  • Pretty cool video! And a sidenote.... Catholic Schools aren't as evil anymore. >.>

  • you're not david attenbrough, but you can document

  • I was just about to ask did he write the da vinci code but then it got answered :P

  • i am proud to think of myself as a miniature Dan Brown. most of my friends in school agree that i am good at many meaningless things. all very similar to the things he is good at.

basically i hope to see dan in person to engage in multiple meaningless tasks.

  • do ya know? scientist had shown that lefty are generally smarter than righty. I think lefty are pretty special - i mean how many ppl use left hand anw?

  • Thumbs up for Dan without a beard!

  • Everyone in my school thinks I'm weird/deformed for being a lefty.

  • Hooray I'm a lefty!

    (The wrong one though ;P)

  • almost exact same thing happened to me

  • Which hand is right and left is something all of nerdfightaria should be able to identify readily, as if they knew it like the backs of their hands. Which brings me to my point, When in doubt look at the back of your hands and abduct/ get your thumb as far away from your hand as possible. This action will allow the left hand to identify it's self by making an "L" shape with the thumb and pointer finger.

  • Yay! I'm left handed. :)

  • I punctured my wrist on a window that offended me (it was open so i punched a massive whole in it....) and now i cannot move my middle, ring and pinkie on my right hand independently.

    DFTBA

    \m/

  • lol the pillow lololol

  • i cut my lef tthunb open with a stanley knife when i was like, 7 and now i have a scar there, thats how i learnt, NERDFIGHTERS, HOOHA

  • I loved this video, Hank! I have the same problem with left and right. I have no idea why, I just get them confused all the time. I don't think it's a serious problem, except for the occasional embarrassment at yoga class, and the very rare but seriously dangerous moments when I'm driving and I panic for a second when I see a "right lane merge" sign on the road >.<

  • @comesNgoesinwaves I totally agree!

  • I tried doing that jumpy thing at 1:03. I keep falling :( If I hold on to something I can do it!

  • I think you're really cute ^_^

  • "though the displays have had the opposite effect"

*Dan flopping his hands back and forth*

  • what was the learning disability?

  • I'm 13 and I still tell my left from my right very fast. I figure it out by thinking which hand I write with, but it's REALLY annoying when someone says, "Go left! Quick!" and I make a mistake or take the time to figure out which way it is.

  • I didn't really know what was right and what was left until I was about 10 beacause of a learning disability too! I still have problems with it actually...

The only thing that really worked for me was one day my mother told me, while I was setting the table, "You always put the fork on the left side" and put the fork down on the table. And so now, I always think of eating with a knife and for to remember.

  • the whole make an L with your finger thing is a good idea... unless of course you have a learning disability and can't figure out what an L goes.

  • i like you better than the other guy on vlogbrothers

  • Yay!!! I'm left handed! I can tell my left from my right except when giving directions. D:

Helpful Tip: put out your hands and hold out your pointer finger and thumb. Which ever hand looks like a "L" to you is your left!

  • I couldn't tell my left from my right until the end of elementary school. People were not impressed when I bragged about my accomplishment.

Apparently all of my mom's family has had the same problem

  • dan brown and the pogotribe ftw!!!

  • I still can't tell my right from my left.

But I don't think I would like to incur nerve damage in order to gain that ability.

  • @SyreenInSapphire there was something not Right with you (only for the pun)

  • I still cant tell my right from left and I'm 16 :(

I've tried the trick where you make an L with your left hand but I get confused about wich L is the real one and which one is the backwards L. I may learn it one day

  • That guy is cool!

  • If I think for a minute I can usually get it. XD Maybe it's like a nerdfighting disease. :o

  • the dan is hot

  • Dan brown need to eat :)

  • This is how i taught my 4 year old how to tell left from right.

Stick your thumb and index finger out on both hands, now look at them.

The left hand makes a L shape, L for left.

  • I didn't know my right from left until fifth grade. There's no disability. I just didn't get it.

  • @showersinger34 Well, just because you have a disability and just didn't 'get it' doesn't mean HE necessarily didn't have disability.

  • @mysweetdreams09

Oh, that wasn't how i meant it to come out! I meant that his disability kept him from learning it, while I was just unable because it didn't click for me! It was meant to be self-deprecating if anything. I never meant to put anyone else down. Sorry if that was poorly phrased.

  • @showersinger34 That's quite alright. :)

  • im a lefty :D

  • My sister is nineteen and still can't tell right from left...perhaps a pot injury is in order.

  • The Dan is a fascinating creature indeed.

  • I used to have the same problem with left and right for awhile. When I was first taught the concept of right and left, I could only remember which was which if I was in the room I was in when my dad taught me right from left and I was facing the direction I was facing when he taught me. I still have trouble with it. I almost always have to pretend like there's words in front of me, and the direction that the words start in is left.

  • Wow. Dan's really brave, openly saying something that we all feel at some point in our lives. I feel that this comment is a bit too philisophical, so I'll end it by saying that Hank reminded me of Zaboomafoo, because he always used to swing around and say "hoo haa!!!!"

  • Wow. I'm really similar to Dan.

  • I KNOW WHO DAN BROWN IS

  • @WispyBerry Kind of ironic

  • poor hank

    the pottery thing

    :(

  • ah a dan brown a animal that can kill me with a knife in 5 minutes ima go poke it with a stick ITS ANGRY ITS ANGRY AHH

  • apparently...your hanging guitar in the background dislikes noobs.

  • Dude.... I knew my left foot from my right couse my left side is my unlucky side couse it has about 3 and a half scares and im only 10 BOOYA

  • I didn't know my right from left until I was 9 too! :D WHOA! but i still have trouble with it. haha

  • I'm almost 17 and still second guess myself when deciding which is my Left and Right. It makes driving and giving/getting directions a bit harder haha Also you have a great narrator voice

  • Comment removed

  • If you make your index finger and thumb in to a 'C' shape on your left hand it stands for 'Chwith' which is left in welsh :)

  • @Gethazzor3 or you could form a L with your index finger and thumb on your left hand saying the left hand forms an L. If you try it with the right hand you always end up with a backwards L.
