This song is based on a psalm.When the hebrews were taken to babylon by their captors, they stop by the river to let the prisioners to rest and requested that they play their instrument. It's a dark psalm, were the hebrews play and curse at the same time.

what a beautiful experience, that I have made too! After having known Leonard Cohen for about 30 years, and having forgotten him for a while, I re-found LC some months ago, when I was attending one of his fabulous concerts. It really overthrew me, and as you said it: he has an influence on my life. It's not only music ... thank you, Mr. Cohen!

Cohen has actually got better with age, his voice is now so spooky and mysterious. Totally compelling. The voice of a man who has lived a thousand lives, died a thousand deaths.
