All I know is that Steckel made absolutely no effort to avoid contact. None. Crosby didn't have the puck and the play was moving well away from him. Steckel simply took advantage of the situation to allow inertia to take over. Ask yourself if he should have made an effort to avoid that kind of contact. When you are considering this, think of the force involved and necessary to give Crosby a concussion and then consider whether or not Steckel was not trying to pop Crosby.

@rdsknsfan21 Steckel's hit on Crosby violated the new Rule 48 (Illegal Check to the Head). Violation of Rule 48 does not allow the zebras to assess a minor; Rule 48 imposes a Major Penalty that requires an automatic Game Misconduct. The no-hits-to-the-head rule applies to every and all players; it doesn't matter (if you like or hate) who is involved.

But it was the Winter Classic, and the league doesn't want any bad press from it.

If the referees felt as though Steckel TARGETED the head, they would have made the call. If the NHL felt he targeted the head, there would have been another issue, no matter what, unless Steckel did this TWO times this season, he would not have been suspended (NHL Rule 48.6). As for me "liking" Steckel, Idc much for FOGOs...

Unquestionable that this hit was not a cheap shot. It was accidental, anyone who watches the Caps, or now the Devils knows that Steckle is... well.. I wouldn't say soft.. but he isn't a head hunter. He can hit, but he doesn't got out of his way to. Obviously didn't go after Crosby.

The fact that Crosby sustained a concussion is just an unfortunate result of it but it was in no way legal. The only thing that would make it a non-call was the fact Steckel tried to avoid Crosby.

TO EVERYONE WHO IS CRITICIZING THE PEOPLE WHO CALL CROSBY A WIMP: Maybe they wouldn't question his toughness for faking the injury if he didn't do it ALL THE TIME. He dives more than anyone and is so dramatic about every hit so when a real one comes along of course people aren't going to believe him. Its like he boy who cried wolf.

Every single player on the ice bitches at the refs on a regular basis. And if you don't think that, you need to have your glasses checked. Team captains are the ones who usually talk to the refs, too.
