These are adult men. It doesn't make any difference whether the teenage girls tried to "seduce" them (although from the chat logs, it appears clear that the men are the instigators). Any man who would leave his home, hop in his car, and drive to where he believes he will find a teenage girl home alone is a CRIMINAL.
Although you are right: If people just fucked more in general, maybe this wouldn't be such a widespread problem in the U.S.

Once given the opportunity, these men pursued the "bait" with fierce determination. What if the people they were chatting with really had been teenage girls? Because it happens all too often: men try to, and DO, meet teen girls for sex.
No one is punishing these men for their thoughts; they are free to keep their impulses to themselves. No, these men are being punished for their ACTIONS. They consciously and willfully left the domain of fantasy and sought out sex with underaged teens.

I'm not talking about men being in control of women--I'm talking about ADULTS who are able to psychologically manipulate CHILDREN in order to pursue their own sexual gratification.
And it happens, all the time. Adult men are able to sweet-talk, cajole, and persuade underaged girls into having sex with them. This isn't some trumped-up issue--it's a grim reality. Get your head out of the sand.

Nonsense. You're acting as if the only predators out there are are the ones nabbed by Dateline. Child predation isn't "something which would not exist in reality." It DOES exist, and it's a growing problem--why do you think so many men show up to this sting operations?
These predators aren't "victims"--they activity initiate conversations, and they keep on talking long after they've been informed that the person is underaged.

As for Dateline's motives--of course they tried to make the show as sensationalistic and lurid as possible. That's how you get high ratings. One is free to debate Chris Hansen's journalistic ethics.
But I still think they did a great public service. If even only one man saw the show and had second thoughts about indulging his sexual impulse to have sex with a child, then it will have been worthwhile.

No one is claiming that teen girls are out there trolling the chat rooms for adult men to have sex with. It's the men who pursue the girls. And such sting operations are a perfectly justifiable way of identifying these type of men.
It's like when undercover cops go to a bad neighborhood and leave a car unlocked with the keys still in it. Anyone who then takes the car is a car thief and SHOULD be prosecuted as such. The fact that police offered an enticement is irelevant.

You make some very good points. I think that one of the major motivators of good behavior is the potential for personal accountability. The internet, with its ability to make people anonymous, tends to undermine the "social contract." I fear you are right: lacking genuine interaction with others, we will become increasingly suspicious and distrustful, which will in turn increase our isolation.
Ever read "The Great Divorce" by C.S. Lewis? His depiction of hell is exactly along these lines.

I outghta, sounds like a neat book. Now that i've figured out how to wrap a towel around my jaw to enable painlessness for a while, I have no excuse for being poorly unread. Yes, all this stuff we've been talking about is pretty opaque when it's hard to exactly know where these 'pedophiles' stand in regardes to the 'social contract'. I'm actually more sympathetic with actually pedophiles--that is, people who have a compulsion to have sex with children--than I do for these men. The girls these men lust for are, after all, sexually developed, so the desire itself isn't problemmatic.
And most of them aren't victims. Listen to their excuses--"I'm lonely, "I'm bored," "My wife just left me." These aren't troubled souls; they're horny, immature men who don't care WHO they have to hurt in order to get their rocks off.
