being happy is just being happy. It is a choice. We are the source of our own happiness. It is not out there. Nobody can give it to us, it is something which is generated by us. It is a way of being - simply choosing to be happy.
Emma Kenny, will you put your hands away and stop counting crap research on your fingers. I wanted a miserable person like me to come on and do a 1 or even a minus number. The doctor talks crap too, probably stays with his mum and needs a happy shave.
0:40 "In fact, happy children out perform their peers on all levels" This, I don't think, makes too much sense. It makes more sense that out performing their peers makes children happy as opposed to the other way around.
World Health Organisation - You are twice as likely to be depressed if you live in an English speaking nation. Those nations being the most individualist nations of the world. This is not coincidence. Happiness is good for society? No society is good for happiness, we could do with a functioning one.
This is good, but considering connection, what happens when you try so hard to contect with people, yet, they don't want to know you and in yourself, you know you love social conversation, yet people just push you away. What then? What are you suppose to do?
why is it fine just to be ok?. i respect this post of course and it is great to be positive about life. however i am too emotional for this creed, and i think a lot of people are the same
To appreciate happiness, you need to feel the right amount of sadness to appreciate it. Nobody's happy 100% of the time - obviously. EVERYBODY'S DIFFERENT!
@Thealmostguy Oh yeah, that sucessful theory, that being the theory jim woodward has basically shown to be utterly refuted. Pursuit of self-interest is not making us happier as a society either, reported happiness is in decline.
@mechnar9 Parochial framework motherfuckers don't see it as all inclusive and essentially play semantics. Besides, you know the causality in your supposed relationship between "reported happiness" and self-interest is weak at best. Fuck's sake, RC is TAUTOLOGICAL.
@Thealmostguy They're not weak at all, egotism in a society and levels of depression are strongly correlated, that alone tells us something. Secondly saying RC is tautological is horribly naive, humans are not rational agents, they do not have transitive preference ordering, nor do they maximise welfare all the times. RC has failed too many times it is clear human behaviour is driven by a combination of normativity, evolutionary drives and rational choice.
@mechnar9 Fucking massive difference between correlation and causality dude. Rationality... under the acceptance that indivisuals have distinct preferences, unique to their own make-up. This is especially poignant when considering that inter-temporal preferences are inconsistent. This is of course why you may stress that RC is an incomplete tool for the masses BUT holds in the case of the individual. Given that I only give a shit about the idividual (moi)... well you see where this is going.
@Thealmostguy Such a strong correlation is fucking damning. As for the rest I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. If it holds for all the individuals then it holds for the masses, clearly pursuit of self-interest only makes a few people happy. Videos such as this reinforce such selfish conceptions of happiness as the social norm, you should be happy because you have such and such paltry freedom. None of these people mention anything but leisure and.work activities.
@mechnar9 Correlations and causality are two totally seperate thing my dude. Especially in the social dynamics of happiness where there are so many variables, many of which cannot be accounted for. And what about bi-directional or reverse causality? It's not so clear cut.
Holding for individuals and holding for the masses is NOT the same deal. We measure the first with maximisation/optimality and the second with EQUITY and optimality.
Yeah, a functioning society would obviously be useful.
@Thealmostguy Yes but a very strong correlation at least tells us exactly that depression and individualism in a society are very closely correlated. This itself is a strong claim. Just because we cannot establish causation is no reason to dismiss data, we know it didn't happen by chance. 2nd paragraph, no idea, you measure happiness with maximisation/optimality? Or rationality through welfare maximisation? Seriously your not making yourself clear.
@mechnar9 Can't disregard the data, true. But neither can you draw conclusions from it.
I measure happiness as utility maximisation. For mass numbers however, RC models scale things down and assume that preferences are homogenous (for simplicity). That's when theorists bring in welfare maximisation and equity, and no doubt why so many people critisize RC as being oversimplified.
@Thealmostguy I conclude depression and individualism are related. When did happiness come to mean utility maximisation? Is it not perfectly possible to be better off in every quantifiable sense yet be less happy than ever. Theorist do nothing to aid prediction on a mass scale unless their theories are descriptive. RC is descriptively untenable - people are demonstratably not as RC maintains.
@mechnar9 Utility IS happiness. That's why I said it's tautological.
"Theorist do nothing to aid prediction on a mass scale unless their theories are descriptive." - Yet RC remains the dominant economic (or even social science) paradigm. Now I'm not one to tout mass acceptance/allegiance as any sort of proof but in this case I am inclined to agree with boys at Chicago Uni.l
If less people were happy about their latest promotion, success or acquistion of some meaningless commodity, then they might spend more time asking how can we make the world a better place.
This video attempts to establish being "happy" as being the normal healthy state of being and if your not happy you will die sooner and underperform. This is offensive, do you think excellence is achieved through "happiness", if Michelangelo had been "happy" in the sense these people use it he would have settled down and never done anything of note. Most people's happiness is simply them giving up on the possibility life can be any better, if you want to be stupid, be mindlessly happy.
@mechnar9 ... What are talking about? OF COURSE HAPPINESS is a normal state of being - you were always taught to do your best at what you love. That's a healthy state of living, and if you're not living healthily then of course you're gonna feel like shit. A lot like an unhealthy diet. The reason why no one likes to feel like shit is because it's not good for you ... and yes, it's killing you.
@Raymint No because if life dealt you a tough hand you have nothing to be happy about, being happy with a shit deal, as so many people delude themselves they are, is just a way of placating stupid people. Happiness must be earnt, if you're not happy then you have an ambition to change that situation, if you become happy being less you will never become more. If you feel unhappy you should express yourself and feel those emotions for real, never let anyone tell you happiness is "normal".
@mechnar9 Then you've missed the point of this video - they hadn't described happiness as contentment with what you've been given, they had described it as getting what you want. And if you feel unhappy you need to fix it - as expressing your unhappiness is far less important. People who are really happy (the people described in the video) have earned their happiness. You can't fool yourself into thinking you're happy, you're always suppressing your unhappiness through one means or another.
@Raymint So self-loving people who are proud of themselves are happy, no they're wankers. Everything else these people claim to be so happy about is a pityful blip in a sea of fail. True happiness has to be earnt yes, but not by being a self-serving arsehole who get what he desires. Most people are happy because they're stupid or deluded, true happiness come from utterly rigourous self-honesty and all the pain and sorrow that comes with it. Therefore if you feel sad be sad.
@mechnar9 Then you simply have the wrong idea of life, if you think that it's a sin to be content with yourself. How can you truly love others before first loving yourself? And how can you completely love yourself without first learning yourself? And how can one learn themselves before realising their potential? The most challenging yet most rewarding feat any man or woman can possibly achieve is to realise their full potential. And that is what each of us here have a God given obligation to do.
@Raymint God given? Please don't talk bollocks, no offense mate but we don't need a lecture, your making yourself out as a real wanker. You might be happy with self-love but thats preserve of the selfish. The things that make most people happy lead us headlong into harm. Nobody has an obligation to be happy with their lot, sadness is not irrational.
@mechnar9 How many times are you gonna say "happy with your lot", before you own up to your own weakness? How can you sit there and tell me that you pissing about in your own crap instead of doing something about your unhappiness (which you can as a fucking westerner) and tell me that's not self destructive? You're not a victim of a broken world, you were born into it - you know nothing of a fixed world. All you know is that you have advantage over many others .
@Raymint So what if I don't know it? I can still demand more than be satisfied with the paltry scraps most people live off. Also I'm no victim, I get on with the same as anyone, but nobody is going to make me smile as I do it, that's the one freedom that can't be taken away.
@mechnar9 Sadness isn't irrational, it's just not good for you and you simply need to admit to the fact that you have no excuse for being sad while in a position to fix it.
@mechnar9 That is what you're taught in school to do. That is what every obstacle you come up against teaches you to do. It is the great mission of life, that of what we know so far. And those who achieve such greatness are happiest. If we as human beings are instinctively attracted to this feeling then it would be silly not to seek it out - and if seeking it out takes character building and mental growth then it is all too clear that this is the universally correct direction to be heading in.
"That is what every obstacle you come up against teaches you to do...those who achieve such greatness are happiest."
- Have you ever been to Amsterdam? best time ever. best people ever. My point is, smoking weed with people who are also smoking weed makes me happy. If I do that here I get arrested and taken to jail.
How can I acheive happiness? Must I change the law for my entire country just so I can be happy? An impossible task.
@69salford69 That's a point riddled with holes, mate. That's obviously an unnatural high, and you're not supposed to have to take some kind of drug to be happy. Look at your comment - you're happiest when you smoke weed? That's okay if you're generally a happy person but if you're only happy when you're smoking weed then you'll need to go away and come back to me when you have a proper argument against happiness being a state of mind.
I'm saying weed makes everything better - watching films, eating food, going on a road trip, a house party, a long walk, a nice view on a mountain top, a rainy day at home while on YouTube...
Money makes the World go round so regardless of what you think happiness is, if you haven't got money, you haven't got anything. So, yeah, weed makes me happy.
- "it is no indication of good health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."
Long-term happiness is only possible if you don't go through long-term bullshit to get there. The world we live in is so fucked up, I need a mask or a sedetive to hide me from reality.
When people get married and become "happy" it's because they go into their own love-bubble and turn their back on the outside World. How can you be happy in this World??
@69salford69 hmmm ... so I guess you're discounting the fact that poor people are much better off now than they were in the past. That all we need to do now is to do well in school and have some drive to get into the position in life we want. Is it now trendy to continue to complain about everything. None of you know anything - people can get rich doing ridiculous things like "Chocolate Rain". it doesn't matter who's getting rich, the opportunities still exist where they didn't before.
"poor people are much better off now than they were in the past"
- which country? Nigeria still use wooden operating tables.
"the opportunities" you speak of are not still there at all. Poor people don't have full-fledged property rights of land. In 1977, a house in UK was £60,000 and now its £180,000. First-time-buyers have dropped by just under 20% in 20 years. In 2002, UK had built it's fewest amount of homes since WWII
Children getstabbed to death at school in my country.
@69salford69 Over population. Get your tongue out of mechnar9's ass for a sec' - is everything that's wrong with Britain really getting you down? Were you around in 77 and slowly had to watch times change? I mean what you're talking about is the result of our own government attempting to right their very wrong establishment - which actually has nothing to do with them. They don't know how to fix it.
@69salford69 Children getting stabbed in school ... rememeber Skin heads? Remember the times of street brawls, people's shops getting torn apart and the owners killed over racist views? Back then there were places I couldn't walk down, as a black man, out of fear of getting beaten into the ground. Where is all of that now? Do you think that could even happen now?
well, well, well...You just showed me you are biased and racist..
"there were places I couldn't walk down. as a black man, out of fear of getting beaten into the ground. Where is all of that now?"
When was the last time I went to Moss Side? When I was 6, we were abused with hand-gestures because we were white and we didn't belong with the niggers that lived there.
Fuck off you racist piece of shit. A black man robs a white man, its theft. A white man robs a black man, it's racist
@69salford69 ... Yeah, I think I've learned all there is to know here. You see I thought we were talking about the nature of human beings - "Man is evil! No, Man is Good!" That sort of thing.
Look, I'll give it one more try to clear up your opinion of me - despite the fact that the moment you thought I was racist (I mean "biased" is a more rational opinion to come out of what I said. I wasn't going for that either, but I certainly wasn't going for racism), you call me a NIGGER/FUCKING MONKEY.
@69salford69 You're a whining piece of shit to still be complaining about Britain's faults - bringing up American statistics to back your complaints - and then trying to pick wholes in my argument that'll only end up wronging me while the truth still remains ...
@69salford69 I do, it's an out of touch communal fear, that has you wishing black youngsters would go away, as opposed to them being less violent. The special thing about you is that you're outspokenly racist so no one wants you on both sides. When you're in fear, you're on your own. Got to Sheffield.
@69salford69 Well, yeah - you gonna complain about causing someone offense? I mean you can't have it both ways, you either do what you want and be judged for it or suppress your feelings, thus conforming. This is a world where your views have to be powered by reason, no one can do or say anything without fully justifying the action. I don't see reason behind you calling me derogatory term - you weren't compelled to do that before you realised I was black.
@69salford69 Do you think it's fair that you hold my genetic difference against me, despite the fact that we can communicate with each other in the same language. My skin colour's the one thing that differs between us and, to your inconvenience, stands as the one thing I cannot change. Why should I have to put up with someone who wants to insult me over something I can't even change. That's why you either put up or shut up - if you cannot rationalise your behaviour.
Nah you were racist when you said the days of "not being able to walk down a street because you were black" were behind us. Those days are not gone, now its the white people who have to be careful where they are walking...
The E.D.L say "Black & White Unite against Al Qeada", but I want to see black & white unite and get in our Government, get the citizens in charge, sort the ghettos out, sort youth crime out, sort drug abuse out, get people in work, get people in school, everything
@69salford69 And that's what's happening. I mean It's a slow process, as it would be but it's happening. And that wasn't a racist comment. I mean even when you draw it out of context like that it still doesn't sound racist, only biased. You're just grasping at straws in an attempt to justify your racial slurs towards me.
"that's what's happening" - bullshit. Black people drive thousands of whites out of their homes and take over the area, taking crime up with it.
I don't justify "racial slurs" because it's OK for you to be racist, and im not going to sit here and lie, and say someone like Michelle Obama doesn't look like a monkey, when she clearly does.
Its not racist its just a fact, I'm afraid. If I said she looked like anything else I'd be lying. Blacks look like monkeys. Fact. Not racist.
@69salford69 "Monkey" is derogatory, "Nigger monkey fuck" is racist. I'm not racist neither do I get to be, and even if I actually do I wouldn't condone that freedom. Now that we've established that, now that we've established that not only am I not racist but I don't think I should even be allowed to be, pick up and fuck off.
"monkey" is not meant as "sub-human" or "inferior race", it is literally a comparison between the way you look. To deny you look similar is a bare-faced lie.
@69salford69 It is sub-human, monkeys are sub-human. It is a derogatory term. If I were racist, you couldn't judge me for it as you're racist yourself. You wish I were racist because then you wouldn't feel like such a cunt for what you said - but while we're still doing this, let me tell you exactly why not only am I not racist but it would be stupid of me to be ...
@69salford69 The world is currently run by white men. They're in this position because the idea they'd had, which lead to the industrial revolution, was the first idea stable enough to run the world with. White people are hated by the rest of the world because of your legacy (what you did to get into that position as a race). Now what would usually happen is that there would be some sort of uprising as the rest of the world recognise it's common enemy, bands together and takes them on ...
"The world is currently run by white men. They're in this position because the idea they'd had"
- I disagree.
White men rule the World because we left Africa. We travelled, overcoming challenges and obstacles, learning to build warmer & stronger homes, and used more complex & effective tools, and learnt to hunt different prey.
The blacks who stayed behind stayed black. They did not need to evolve or develop.
I am racist and I'm proud of it. I don't do any harm I'm just proud.
@69salford69 Well then don't drag me down with you - be racist all by your self. Don't be a pussy and call me one just because you can't own up to simply being a cunt. Take being a twat like a man.
P.S. It was the idea for the industrial revolution that pushed you to the forefront - you would've stayed in your warm homes otherwise. If the Chinese were interested in Global domination before you they'd of done it themselves.
@69salford69 Well then if you only did it because you could, why would you disagree with my thesis? And if you, a white man, still want to whine and bitch, like a little girl, over your own world then do it quietly -- you're embarrassing yourself.
@69salford69 Mate, this has become a cultural hotspot (like New York) and you were born into London at the state it is in and you should know of nothing else. The city is no more yours than it is mine, regardless of who your forefathers were. You should only put yourself into the equation as it is only our generation and those after us who'll be inheriting this city, not the guys who invented warm homes - they're still dead.
I'm not from London. I went there two years ago and swore never to go back.
It was disgusting...Shit on the floor. Rubbish in the street. No room to walk or move. Nobody speaking English. I felt unsafe from the moment I got on thetrain, to the moment I got home.
I fucking hate that place, and it is EXACTLY why I feel the way I do now. The place I live in is wonderful, and do you know why??? Because we're all white..and every year its getting darker...few more years it'll be fucked
@69salford69 However genetically superior you may feel to me stands in the way of nothing. If you yourself are neither more intelligent, stronger willed, or even physically capable than I am then, as far as logic is concerned, you're simply deluded.
@69salford69 But instead what has happened is nothing. And nothing has happened because the rest of the world hates each other. And in hating each other we've become stuck in this rut of no progression. We stay in this degenerated form while the white man continues to progress. And the further he progresses, the weaker we become in comparison. We don't realise that if we were to learn to love each other we would become powerful enough to rise against the common enemy. Now listen to this ...
@69salford69 Now if we were to knock off the man in power, to put another up there, we would've done that through the same means the original man in power used to get where he was. And we'd be left with yet another enemy. And this will keep happening until we realise just what is keeping this cycle going. Until we realise it's all hate.
@69salford69 I have family members who are convinced white men are wicked by nature, without quite taking into account what we've done. They bring up slavery as an example and don't even realise that we were sold to them by our own people. These black men of comparative stature just had a little bit of money waved in front of their faces before they committed heresies most people wouldn't even dream of doing. I ask them if they believe white people would do the same to their own ...
@69salford69 I say no but then they say "Yes, of course they would, they send them out to war". To which I reply, "so is this not a sign of absolutely power corrupting absolutely, and not men behaving despicably because of the colour of their skin?".
@69salford69 I believe that separating our selves from one another, based on skin colour is not forward progression. It is stagnation. We stay blind to what's really wrong with everything and continue to feed it, growing it to an all more dangerous size.
"white violence against black people was 28 times more likely (1 in 45 incidents) to be labelled as a hate crime than black violence against white people (1 in 1254 incidents)"
- 1999 FBI statistics by John Perazzo
No, I don't read the news because it has the same racist and biased view that niggers like yourself have. Racism cuts both ways you fucking monkey.
@69salford69 Now - I made that point to illustrate just how much times have changed. There were rifts (and here's another point too, a change which I HAVE seen before my very eyes, and I'm only 19), between blacks and white supremacists known as skin heads, and what they used to do was brawl a lot, right out on the streets. Now as a result of this rift there ended up being certain places each other would stay out ...
@69salford69 Now that thing I mentioned earlier about me making another point - the whole black on black crime thing (which goes way deep into our ancestry - selling each other into slavery) meant that there were certain places you couldn't go to based on your own postal code. What the rift between Blacks and skin heads meant was that there were certain places you couldn't go to based on the colour of your screen. Now that's even more extreme.
@69salford69 And to clear up that point - I was in fact around to see black on black crime, which is something that continued long after skin heads. And I have watched that diminish to levels so low that I can't even remember what it felt like to be afraid of places like Peckham and Brixton.
There are many problems like this being fixed, in ways they don't seem to be in America (well as far as I know) - how great is that? Just look at how British black men compare to the rest.
@69salford69 I was down in Paris at the beginning of this month and I was walking about for something to eat at around 1am. I found somewhere but around the area were black gangsters acting like complete and utter fools. I was intimidated like I hadn't been since I was a kid - and it'd felt so unusual to have that familiar feeling come back to me. I just was no longer used to feeling like that in London.
@69salford69 i wouldnt be happy if i had weed every day, it can make you tired and lethargic, and absent minded. Plus, if you smoke it every day, you'll find days without it to be unpleasant.
I'm not against it however, i just think it should be one of those very occasional pleasures in lifel.
@Raymint At school you are also socialised into accepting mediocrity, follow your dreams and life will turn out how you desire, it's alright to be a cleaner or a politician as long as you're good at it. Problem is life isn't like that at all, it's harsh and competitive and favours the ruthless. If you can be happy with that you're happy only due to delusion.
@mechnar9 Jesus Christ! Y'know what? I bet you're just too weak to be happy. And I think you've fooled yourself into thinking people strong enough to go and get what they want are bad, so you won't have to admit to your own weakness.
Just give up on this argument. You've had several tries and I don't think you have anything to say, of worth, against my position.
@Raymint No getting what you want isn't always good for the overall situation, and know you what, I have no problem getting what I want. I am in a better position that most people in that respect. But you know what I have the decency to realise, its not fair, I can have a decent paying job and other people can clean the bogs for 5 quid an hour. That's the way it is, but don't you dare tell me to be happy about a world full of inequality and hypocrasy. If you feel sad feel it, be authentic.
@mechnar9 I don't really even have a problem with people who simply can't be bothered to make themselves happy, I have a problem with people who, in that circumstance, cannot admit that their state of mind is their own responsibility. And that has nothing to do with people who literally can't make themselves happy, it's all to do with people like you.
@Raymint I am making myself happy, but it won't be with a fucking flurry of notes or listening to really loud music, and part of getting there is experiencing sadness, not mindlessly ignoring it.
@mechnar9 OMG, you're talking shit - read through my comments. At what point has anyone (even the folks in the video) said that happiness is learning to be satisfied with what you've got? I'll say it one last FUCKING TIME - happiness comes through getting what you want!
@Raymint No because most people don't want the right things, they want to be rich (at the expense of other people), but they will point blank refuse that their holding of wealth is at the expense of anything. They will say they deserve it, and feel good about themselves for it. They say they earnt it, well you know thats the biggest lie the devil ever told. And now we're a society that elevates what is benign and despises what is meaningful.
@mechnar9 Yes but you know that the happiest man isn't the wealthiest man but the one who has people to share it with. You know that. You also know that no one really knows what they want upon first thought.
@mechnar9 Don't you dare tell me you're in a sad state of mind because other people have to clean for a living. I think the one thing you don't realise is that you're equating victims to the privileged. And you think those who ignore others who have no choice but to live unhappily are bad. They're not, they've just realised that you only have enough energy, enough life force to worry about yourself. Worrying about everyone else (UNLESS YOU CAN ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT) is pointless.
I'm a westener so I can change my situation, things you can't change you shouldn't be unhappy about. So you have no reason to be unhappy if you're a westerner? Please do fuck off. I don't know if you had noticed, but people are less happy than ever, reported well being has been in decline since the 70's. It's because we've become a selfish society of wankers, in which happiness is just expected as norm and we're told to rejoice of trivial meaningless things.
@mechnar9 Y'know, the reason I argue with you is because I myself am learning not to over think things. I'm learning not to bog myself down with matters that are a symptom of the times and simply adapt to them, to get the best out of what I can make available to me. I'm learning that worrying about the issues of a broken society, like Woody Allen, drowning myself in the darkside of an ancient establishment, doesn't make me intelligent.
@Raymint You're learning to submit nothing less, you're learning to be satisfied with what is crap in life, you're literally having the life beaten out of you. Never stop thinking, that's when people have you where they want you.
Only parts worth watching are 0:06 - 0:08, 0:59 - 1:01, 2:35 - 2:38, 2:58 - 3:12

being happy is just being happy. It is a choice. We are the source of our own happiness. It is not out there. Nobody can give it to us, it is something which is generated by us. It is a way of being - simply choosing to be happy.

World Health Organisation - You are twice as likely to be depressed if you live in an English speaking nation. Those nations being the most individualist nations of the world. This is not coincidence. Happiness is good for society? No society is good for happiness, we could do with a functioning one.

there is nothing more fictatious than peace in this world
peace is like a well oiled machine that is forever runing on love
but out of love sacrifice is born

thus reinforcing the chains of war
ultimately creating the cycle of hatred

@mechnar9 Krishna??? Bah, he was a moron. Someone should have taught him Rational Choice.
Thealmostguy 1 year ago
@Thealmostguy Oh yeah, that sucessful theory, that being the theory jim woodward has basically shown to be utterly refuted. Pursuit of self-interest is not making us happier as a society either, reported happiness is in decline.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 Parochial framework motherfuckers don't see it as all inclusive and essentially play semantics. Besides, you know the causality in your supposed relationship between "reported happiness" and self-interest is weak at best. Fuck's sake, RC is TAUTOLOGICAL.
Thealmostguy 1 year ago
@Thealmostguy They're not weak at all, egotism in a society and levels of depression are strongly correlated, that alone tells us something. Secondly saying RC is tautological is horribly naive, humans are not rational agents, they do not have transitive preference ordering, nor do they maximise welfare all the times. RC has failed too many times it is clear human behaviour is driven by a combination of normativity, evolutionary drives and rational choice.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 Fucking massive difference between correlation and causality dude. Rationality... under the acceptance that indivisuals have distinct preferences, unique to their own make-up. This is especially poignant when considering that inter-temporal preferences are inconsistent. This is of course why you may stress that RC is an incomplete tool for the masses BUT holds in the case of the individual. Given that I only give a shit about the idividual (moi)... well you see where this is going.
Thealmostguy 1 year ago
@Thealmostguy Such a strong correlation is fucking damning. As for the rest I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. If it holds for all the individuals then it holds for the masses, clearly pursuit of self-interest only makes a few people happy. Videos such as this reinforce such selfish conceptions of happiness as the social norm, you should be happy because you have such and such paltry freedom. None of these people mention anything but leisure and.work activities.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 Correlations and causality are two totally seperate thing my dude. Especially in the social dynamics of happiness where there are so many variables, many of which cannot be accounted for. And what about bi-directional or reverse causality? It's not so clear cut.
Holding for individuals and holding for the masses is NOT the same deal. We measure the first with maximisation/optimality and the second with EQUITY and optimality.
Yeah, a functioning society would obviously be useful.
Thealmostguy 1 year ago
@Thealmostguy Yes but a very strong correlation at least tells us exactly that depression and individualism in a society are very closely correlated. This itself is a strong claim. Just because we cannot establish causation is no reason to dismiss data, we know it didn't happen by chance. 2nd paragraph, no idea, you measure happiness with maximisation/optimality? Or rationality through welfare maximisation? Seriously your not making yourself clear.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 Can't disregard the data, true. But neither can you draw conclusions from it.
I measure happiness as utility maximisation. For mass numbers however, RC models scale things down and assume that preferences are homogenous (for simplicity). That's when theorists bring in welfare maximisation and equity, and no doubt why so many people critisize RC as being oversimplified.
Thealmostguy 1 year ago
@Thealmostguy I conclude depression and individualism are related. When did happiness come to mean utility maximisation? Is it not perfectly possible to be better off in every quantifiable sense yet be less happy than ever. Theorist do nothing to aid prediction on a mass scale unless their theories are descriptive. RC is descriptively untenable - people are demonstratably not as RC maintains.
mechnar9 1 year ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@mechnar9 Utility IS happiness.

BETH, ADEM!!!!!!!! woo, your in this FEATURED VIDEO!
2001urchm 1 year ago
This video attempts to establish being "happy" as being the normal healthy state of being and if your not happy you will die sooner and underperform. This is offensive, do you think excellence is achieved through "happiness", if Michelangelo had been "happy" in the sense these people use it he would have settled down and never done anything of note. Most people's happiness is simply them giving up on the possibility life can be any better, if you want to be stupid, be mindlessly happy.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 ... What are talking about? OF COURSE HAPPINESS is a normal state of being - you were always taught to do your best at what you love. That's a healthy state of living, and if you're not living healthily then of course you're gonna feel like shit. A lot like an unhealthy diet. The reason why no one likes to feel like shit is because it's not good for you ... and yes, it's killing you.
Now, do I sound mindless to you?
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint No because if life dealt you a tough hand you have nothing to be happy about, being happy with a shit deal, as so many people delude themselves they are, is just a way of placating stupid people. Happiness must be earnt, if you're not happy then you have an ambition to change that situation, if you become happy being less you will never become more. If you feel unhappy you should express yourself and feel those emotions for real, never let anyone tell you happiness is "normal".
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 Then you've missed the point of this video - they hadn't described happiness as contentment with what you've been given, they had described it as getting what you want. And if you feel unhappy you need to fix it - as expressing your unhappiness is far less important. People who are really happy (the people described in the video) have earned their happiness. You can't fool yourself into thinking you're happy, you're always suppressing your unhappiness through one means or another.
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint So self-loving people who are proud of themselves are happy, no they're wankers. Everything else these people claim to be so happy about is a pityful blip in a sea of fail. True happiness has to be earnt yes, but not by being a self-serving arsehole who get what he desires. Most people are happy because they're stupid or deluded, true happiness come from utterly rigourous self-honesty and all the pain and sorrow that comes with it. Therefore if you feel sad be sad.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 Then you simply have the wrong idea of life, if you think that it's a sin to be content with yourself. How can you truly love others before first loving yourself? And how can you completely love yourself without first learning yourself? And how can one learn themselves before realising their potential? The most challenging yet most rewarding feat any man or woman can possibly achieve is to realise their full potential. And that is what each of us here have a God given obligation to do.
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint God given? Please don't talk bollocks, no offense mate but we don't need a lecture, your making yourself out as a real wanker. You might be happy with self-love but thats preserve of the selfish. The things that make most people happy lead us headlong into harm. Nobody has an obligation to be happy with their lot, sadness is not irrational.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 How many times are you gonna say "happy with your lot", before you own up to your own weakness? How can you sit there and tell me that you pissing about in your own crap instead of doing something about your unhappiness (which you can as a fucking westerner) and tell me that's not self destructive? You're not a victim of a broken world, you were born into it - you know nothing of a fixed world. All you know is that you have advantage over many others .
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint So what if I don't know it? I can still demand more than be satisfied with the paltry scraps most people live off. Also I'm no victim, I get on with the same as anyone, but nobody is going to make me smile as I do it, that's the one freedom that can't be taken away.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 Sadness isn't irrational, it's just not good for you and you simply need to admit to the fact that you have no excuse for being sad while in a position to fix it.
Raymint 1 year ago
@mechnar9 That is what you're taught in school to do. That is what every obstacle you come up against teaches you to do. It is the great mission of life, that of what we know so far. And those who achieve such greatness are happiest. If we as human beings are instinctively attracted to this feeling then it would be silly not to seek it out - and if seeking it out takes character building and mental growth then it is all too clear that this is the universally correct direction to be heading in.
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint
FUCK HAPPINESS it's just a chemical reaction.
69salford69 1 year ago
@69salford69 That's a point riddled with holes, mate. That's obviously an unnatural high, and you're not supposed to have to take some kind of drug to be happy. Look at your comment - you're happiest when you smoke weed? That's okay if you're generally a happy person but if you're only happy when you're smoking weed then you'll need to go away and come back to me when you have a proper argument against happiness being a state of mind.
And yes, I have been to Amsterdam.
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint
69salford69 1 year ago
@69salford69 That's not long term happiness, that's an unnatural high. It's a mask, a sedative.
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint
As mechnar9 said at the top comments;
69salford69 1 year ago
@69salford69 hmmm ... so I guess you're discounting the fact that poor people are much better off now than they were in the past. That all we need to do now is to do well in school and have some drive to get into the position in life we want. Is it now trendy to continue to complain about everything. None of you know anything - people can get rich doing ridiculous things like "Chocolate Rain". it doesn't matter who's getting rich, the opportunities still exist where they didn't before.

"poor people are much better off now than they were in the past"

"the opportunities" you speak of are not still there at all. Poor people don't have full-fledged property rights of land. In 1977, a house in UK was £60,000 and now its £180,000. First-time-buyers have dropped by just under 20% in 20 years. In 2002, UK had built it's fewest amount of homes since WWII

Your prejudice label of "racist" emphasises how political correctness means I can't speak my mind without fear of causing offence or consequence.

69salford69 1 year ago
@69salford69 Well, yeah - you gonna complain about causing someone offense? I mean you can't have it both ways, you either do what you want and be judged for it or suppress your feelings, thus conforming. This is a world where your views have to be powered by reason, no one can do or say anything without fully justifying the action. I don't see reason behind you calling me derogatory term - you weren't compelled to do that before you realised I was black.
Raymint 1 year ago
@69salford69 Do you think it's fair that you hold my genetic difference against me, despite the fact that we can communicate with each other in the same language. Why should I have to put up with someone who wants to insult me over something I can't even change. That's why you either put up or shut up - if you cannot rationalise your behaviour.
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint
Nah you were racist when you said the days of "not being able to walk down a street because you were black" were behind us. Those days are not gone, now its the white people who have to be careful where they are walking...

69salford69 1 year ago
@69salford69 And that's what's happening. I mean It's a slow process, as it would be but it's happening. And that wasn't a racist comment. I mean even when you draw it out of context like that it still doesn't sound racist, only biased. You're just grasping at straws in an attempt to justify your racial slurs towards me.
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint
Fact. Not racist.

69salford69 1 year ago
@69salford69 It is sub-human, monkeys are sub-human. It is a derogatory term. If I were racist, you couldn't judge me for it as you're racist yourself. Raymint 1 year ago
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint
69salford69 1 year ago
@69salford69 Well then don't drag me down with you - be racist all by your self. Don't be a pussy and call me one just because you can't own up to simply being a cunt. Take being a twat like a man.
P.S. It was the idea for the industrial revolution that pushed you to the forefront - you would've stayed in your warm homes otherwise. If the Chinese were interested in Global domination before you they'd of done it themselves.

"If the Chinese were interested in Global domination before you they'd of done it themselves."
-- Yeah but they fucking didn't, did they? The white man conquered. And yes, you are racist, just like ME.
The red indians were native to the land. Like blacks in Africa, they hadn't evolved like the white race.
That's WHY we went there and dominated. That's WHY we went to Africa and dominated.
We are the alpha male, the DOMINANT species, hence I am proud to be racist.

Raymint 1 year ago
@69salford69 Put it this way - you wouldn't have kicked the Red Indians out had you only been there to offer them warm homes.
Raymint 1 year ago
@69salford69 But instead what has happened is nothing. And nothing has happened because the rest of the world hates each other. And in hating each other we've become stuck in this rut of no progression. We stay in this degenerated form while the white man continues to progress. And the further he progresses, the weaker we become in comparison. We don't realise that if we were to learn to love each other we would become powerful enough to rise against the common enemy. Now listen to this ...
Raymint 1 year ago
@69salford69 Now if we were to knock off the man in power, to put another up there, we would've done that through the same means the original man in power used to get where he was. And we'd be left with yet another enemy. And this will keep happening until we realise just what is keeping this cycle going. Until we realise it's all hate.
Raymint 1 year ago
@69salford69 I have family members who are convinced white men are wicked by nature, without quite taking into account what we've done. They bring up slavery as an example and don't even realise that we were sold to them by our own people. These black men of comparative stature just had a little bit of money waved in front of their faces before they committed heresies most people wouldn't even dream of doing. I ask them if they believe white people would do the same to their own ...
Raymint 1 year ago
@69salford69 I say no but then they say "Yes, of course they would, they send them out to war". To which I reply, "so is this not a sign of absolutely power corrupting absolutely, and not men behaving despicably because of the colour of their skin?".
Raymint 1 year ago
@69salford69 I believe that separating our selves from one another, based on skin colour is not forward progression. It is stagnation. We stay blind to what's really wrong with everything and continue to feed it, growing it to an all more dangerous size.

@69salford69 A place where even deep and dirty underground problems people would rather forget are fixed.

@69salford69 You read the news lately? Overall Crime, in the UK and Wales, is lower than it's been for 29 years.

@BVargas78
Yeah, everybody is different so happiness will come in different forms.
The main reason I smoke cannabis is to make me "absent minded". The world we live in makes me so sad.

@Raymint At school you are also socialised into accepting mediocrity, follow your dreams and life will turn out how you desire, it's alright to be a cleaner or a politician as long as you're good at it. Problem is life isn't like that at all, it's harsh and competitive and favours the ruthless. If you can be happy with that you're happy only due to delusion.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 Jesus Christ! Y'know what? I bet you're just too weak to be happy. And I think you've fooled yourself into thinking people strong enough to go and get what they want are bad, so you won't have to admit to your own weakness.
Just give up on this argument. You've had several tries and I don't think you have anything to say, of worth, against my position.
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint No getting what you want isn't always good for the overall situation, and know you what, I have no problem getting what I want. I am in a better position that most people in that respect. But you know what I have the decency to realise, its not fair, I can have a decent paying job and other people can clean the bogs for 5 quid an hour. That's the way it is, but don't you dare tell me to be happy about a world full of inequality and hypocrasy. If you feel sad feel it, be authentic.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 I don't really even have a problem with people who simply can't be bothered to make themselves happy, I have a problem with people who, in that circumstance, cannot admit that their state of mind is their own responsibility. And that has nothing to do with people who literally can't make themselves happy, it's all to do with people like you.
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint I am making myself happy, but it won't be with a fucking flurry of notes or listening to really loud music, and part of getting there is experiencing sadness, not mindlessly ignoring it.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 OMG, you're talking shit - read through my comments. At what point has anyone (even the folks in the video) said that happiness is learning to be satisfied with what you've got? I'll say it one last FUCKING TIME - happiness comes through getting what you want!
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint No because most people don't want the right things, they want to be rich (at the expense of other people), but they will point blank refuse that their holding of wealth is at the expense of anything. They will say they deserve it, and feel good about themselves for it. They say they earnt it, well you know thats the biggest lie the devil ever told. And now we're a society that elevates what is benign and despises what is meaningful.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 Yes but you know that the happiest man isn't the wealthiest man but the one who has people to share it with. You know that. You also know that no one really knows what they want upon first thought.
Raymint 1 year ago
@mechnar9 Don't you dare tell me you're in a sad state of mind because other people have to clean for a living. I think the one thing you don't realise is that you're equating victims to the privileged. And you think those who ignore others who have no choice but to live unhappily are bad. They're not, they've just realised that you only have enough energy, enough life force to worry about yourself. Worrying about everyone else (UNLESS YOU CAN ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT) is pointless.
Raymint 1 year ago
I'm a westener so I can change my situation, things you can't change you shouldn't be unhappy about. So you have no reason to be unhappy if you're a westerner? Please do fuck off. I don't know if you had noticed, but people are less happy than ever, reported well being has been in decline since the 70's. It's because we've become a selfish society of wankers, in which happiness is just expected as norm and we're told to rejoice of trivial meaningless things.
mechnar9 1 year ago
@mechnar9 Y'know, the reason I argue with you is because I myself am learning not to over think things. I'm learning not to bog myself down with matters that are a symptom of the times and simply adapt to them, to get the best out of what I can make available to me. I'm learning that worrying about the issues of a broken society, like Woody Allen, drowning myself in the darkside of an ancient establishment, doesn't make me intelligent.
Raymint 1 year ago
@Raymint You're learning to submit nothing less, you're learning to be satisfied with what is crap in life, you're literally having the life beaten out of you. Never stop thinking, that's when people have you where they want you.
