Most vertebrates have very very similar anatomies, at least on this planet. It's a reasonable assumption that a bipedal, most likely mammalian alien who breathes, has a heartbeat, and can survive on Earth has at least a vaguely similar anatomy. Besides, he's dying. It's worth a shot :p
