  • actually , where is CHINA ?

  • Speaking of dipping the flag, The US flag was the only one that wasn't dipped to Hitler at the '36 Olympics.

  • wow they rebuilt london pretty fast, that was 3 years after world war 2!

  • first the US wont dip the flag next the wont face the royal box!

  • @AlexHWalker

By tradition the Flag of the United States of America dips for no one except for the sitting President of the United States.

  • @redwingsmike3718 Actually, it can't be dipped unless it's the ensign responding to another country's ship.

  • @Kanjilearner Also, the Saudis don't dip their flag because it has the creed that 'There is but one God, and Muhammad is His prophet.'

  • how can you say that look at 2:31 that guy is draging his countries flag

  • olympic games resume in london england after 12 years of hiatus due to global conflict that infect most country in the world. the last time it was held in berlin germany as adolf hitler at the helm of power!

  • I look for The Parade of Poland

  • Japan and Germany couldn't attend because they've been very naughty.

  • the athletes look too formal :/

  • 2:31 nice way to honor your country by dragging your flag

  • In 64 years (after these Games), London will host the Games of the XXX (30th) Olympiad.

  • Was this the Olympics where the Irish-American shot putter whispered to the team Captain if you tip that flag to (King of England) you won't live to see the light of morn? upon the enormous public outcry the Shot Putter and Captain are requested to explain themselves on World Wide Radio the following day. His response, "This Flag was never intended to be tipped to an earthly King". Hushed the outrage and a law was passed and since then the American Flag has never been tipped?

  • This nation was established to escape the tyranny of monarchs, and I guess these Olympians stuck to their guns. God bless them for doing so. Obviously, you should always give heads of state their proper respect, but never a servant.

  • STATISTICS CALCULATION - from

    BR-0 com/olympics htm

  • out of curiousity, is this actually recorded colour film or is it colourized after the fact?

  • I'm fairly certain it was filmed in color. Color film did exist then, although it was rare. It would've been used for something "special," such as this.

  • The 1948 Olympics were filmed in original color, but not using color film.

The opening ceremony was shot in three-strip Technicolor, which records full color (all three primary colors). The athletic events were shot on two-color bipack, which only records partial color (blues and greens mixed-together).

Both processes use only black-and-white film. Color negative film did exist, but was not yet commercially viable.

  • right. it was respect at that time to salute the flag, after all the war was just over by 3 years and the first olympics ,maybe one day younger people will understand the sacrifice.

  • As far as I'm concerned, though you may not agree with or even like a head of state, you must always show them the proper respect if you're visiting from another nation.

    And yes, I am American.

  • I miss Germany

  • @necessitevitale Alas, Germany and Japan were not allowed to compete due to their instigation of WW2.

  • That Wembley again

  • you wa*kers

  • You boring twits - the flags are not being dipped to a person but to a symbol of our nation. And a nation that had fought alone for

three years.......they don't make nations like that anymore.

  • Hell, I'm English and I wouldn't dip our flag before the King or Queen or whoever! They're just human beings like any others. They're nothing special. The American bloke was quite right! It actually makes me cringe to see people dipping their flags like that.

  • My grandfather gave my mother and I tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies. I was five. I sat just behind the King and I must be in one of the two close ups. I can remember it as if it were yesterday. First time I had sen the King. I think this simple ceremony is as good as any today. Especially the flight of pigeons who were the stars. The tickets cost 10 shillings and six pence which was a fortune in 1948 and it rained a lot! Thnak you for posting.

  • With all the work it took to make this country great. IT DOES NOT!!! need to bow to any King, Dictator, Or Prime Minister.

God Bless America And Everyone Who Loves It!

  • good bless the idiots!!

  • Its your right to be ignorant. Don't you love this country.

  • Why this video is not complete?, why mexican olympic team was not showing.

  • Wow, the parade looked more sophisticated back then.

  • Athletes marched in formation and had to dip their flags to the king. Wow, very different from today.

  • All except the flag of the United States. I don't know who said it, but it was in 1908 when the games were in London that a US athlete said: "This flag bows to no earthly king." or something like that...

  • It was an Irish-American (not surprisingly since they've tried to do everything to sabotage the US/UK alliance) who said that, and the US flag has not been dipped since.

  • typical usa..

  • It was Martin Sheridan, a US track athlete.

  • I won't be surprised if Team USA doesn't dip the flag in London 2012.

  • It hasn't been done since 1908 when the Olympics were in London for the first time.

  • If they don't then frankly they shouldn't be allowed to compete!!!!

  • I LUV THE PARADE OF NATIONS!!!

BTW, can u add some more of the parade of nations from the past Olympics pls?
