Performing anything is kind of his shtick. The concept of his show is he takes requests, pretty much ANYTHING and him and his musicians manage to figure it out within seconds and perform the song. It can be quite impressive.

I once heard him sing the national anthem he was bad ass, I can't get into this though. sort of half assed versions of lots of classics.

Singing covers isn't improvising. it's singing covers. Improvising would be making up words as he went along.
