The ending sure is a downer. When I went through the final level and then rewinded, I was like...O.M.G. So yeah, it seems that Tim is the evil villian in the game trying to capture the princess and the knight is the good guy....

so the final stage with you running from the fire is actually the beginning and you're trying to find the princess while setting all these traps for no reason

Not really.Its more like...or atleast im thinking so,Is that Tim suddenly went insane for whatever reason...The final star ending is more or less caused by hes sickness,and the non-star ending is the princess running from tim,for the liklyhood that Tim wanted "Revenge" For hes insanity.

Adding to that,The reverse time atribute for the final world is more or less Tim Finnaly breaking down to hes doom...

Wow...Very strange plot twist...Exacly what i enjoy in a game.One very long moment your the good guy,then you realize your the bad guy.Apparently,Tim makes you think your going to go rescue,when at the end you discover it.Like having Water splashed in your face in the middle of a disturbing dream...

My personal theroy; the princess, like all good Nintendo Princesses (Cept Roseolina and Daisy, maybe Tetra) is a whore and Tim was the good guy all along.

In a world that is backwards, it was Tim who looked the demon.

Actually the ending itself is fairly metaphorical in nature. Reading a bit deeper into the games text suggests Tim might've been responsible for building the Atomic Bomb, and the entire game might've been Tim trying to come to terms with the horror he's created. He can't really turn back time, which is what the ending represents.

Maybe. I could do with reading the text a few more times, but it drops hints every so often.
