The mooted United States Of Africa ideas of the early 1960s, with many current African states still colonies, championed by Nkrumah, would not have been realized in his lifetime, even if he died in office. Now, African states seem willing to enter into detente, but still clearly wish for autonomy as states. It's a "romantic" idea, and one that would be interesting, but I doubt it will be seen in either of our lifetimes.

Danquah, Obetsebi-Lamptey, and Adjei, were ready-made lap dogs of the multinational corporate will to take over all of Ghana's industries(consequential to full development) that were created throughout Nkrumah's Presidency. They were willing uncle tom's that aided and abetted the sell out of their own people for personal gain. Ghana fell into neocolonial status in Feb of 1966, of course carefully chosen puppets would honor these scum.
Obetsebi-Lamptey was one of the ringleaders who tried to assassinate President Nkrumhah in 1962. He was supposed to be imprisioned for that. The traitor plotted murder on a head of state. Danquah thought he was smart enough to use Nkrumah to make the U.G.C.C., which lacked popular support, look like a movement for the people, but he failed. The masses and youth demanded " self government now", hence the CPP.
Yeah, Obetsebi-Lamptey was such a threat, he was locked up in medium security. Nkrumah was gracious enough to release him for three days, before he was arrested again after the Kulungugu kangaroo court implicated him, because basically if you were an opponent of Nkrumah, you were guilty, like it or not. Also little evidence to link him to the 1961 plots (not 1962, for your dissertation), but all his UP buddies got rounded up anyway. He should have stayed in Togo until 1966.
No argument that Danquah was looking at a more graduated plan, while Nkrumah's plan was a faster track. I don't argue this part of the time line, Nkrumah was very effective at that stage. It is the last 3-4 years of his rule that come into question, when suppression, kangaroo courts, economic collapse, overspending, economically & politically questionable military mobilizations, and a one-party state (ie dictatorship) were the orders of the day.

I could identify at least 50 points of economic successes during the entire period of Nkrumah's leadership as head of state. I've never been to Ghana, but I have had friends in the past who were from there, and they were all such happy beautiful people. I doubt that even they would have all the information you've provided here.
Well, most Ghanaians will likely disagree with me. My Ghanaian girlfriend only knows Nkrumah's good points, whereas my host that I stay with when I go there agrees that despite gaining Ghana's independence, it did not give Nkrumah carte blanche to have a one-party state and suspend civil liberties.

Your assertions on Osageyfos "bad points" are erroneous, it was the 1964 referendum that brought overwhelming Ghanaian support for the Convention Peoples Party. The masses made the CPP Ghana's national party. The enemies of Nkrumah and his Pan-African objectives could not stand to see a united africa that would not need the "aid" and pateralism of the west. Those C.I.A. backed army and police traitors could not stand the successes of the CPP, and Nkrumah.

I've decided that you're naive. Let me give you a little history lesson. The Preventive Detention Act was orginally created to deal with Nkrumah well before he became the Prime Minister in 1957. As early as 1951 the British colonial government tried to silence him for good by criminalizing him for organizing the masses of Ghana for "Independence Now", and the Positive Action campaign he and others initiated in the country.

The mooted United States Of Africa ideas of the early 1960s, with many current African states still colonies, championed by Nkrumah, would not have been realized in his lifetime, even if he died in office. Now, African states seem willing to enter into detente, but still clearly wish for autonomy as states. It's a "romantic" idea, and one that would be interesting, but I doubt it will be seen in either of our lifetimes.

Danquah, Obetsebi-Lamptey, and Adjei, were ready-made lap dogs of the multinational corporate will to take over all of Ghana's industries(consequential to full development) that were created throughout Nkrumah's Presidency. Obetsebi-Lamptey was one of the ringleaders who tried to assassinate President Nkrumhah in 1962. He was supposed to be imprisioned for that. The traitor plotted murder on a head of state. Danquah thought he was smart enough to use Nkrumah to make the U.G.C.C., which lacked popular support, look like a movement for the people, but he failed. Yeah, Obetsebi-Lamptey was such a threat, he was locked up in medium security. Nkrumah was gracious enough to release him for three days, before he was arrested again after the Kulungugu kangaroo court implicated him, because basically if you were an opponent of Nkrumah, you were guilty, like it or not. Also little evidence to link him to the 1961 plots (not 1962, for your dissertation), but all his UP buddies got rounded up anyway. He should have stayed in Togo until 1966.

No argument that Danquah was looking at a more graduated plan, while Nkrumah's plan was a faster track. I don't argue this part of the time line, Nkrumah was very effective at that stage. It is the last 3-4 years of his rule that come into question, when suppression, kangaroo courts, economic collapse, overspending, economically & politically questionable military mobilizations, and a one-party state (ie dictatorship) were the orders of the day.

The planned forte into Rhodesia was an extremely unpopular example, but the imminent army involvement allowed a pretext for Kotoka's units to move on Accra. His projects often took little of Ghana's rapidly-declining economy into account, and he often seemed to ignore Ghana's plight in favour of trying to get involved in what other countries were doing. I heard he was saddened by Danquah's death in his custody - but that's hardly going to bring his strongest opponent back, is it ?

The Republic of Ghana became a neo-colonial (puppet) nation-state on Feb 24, 1966. The CPP was deliberately banned, and all that was built was sold off to foreign financial interests. Adjei was completely loyal to Nkrumah, WTF are you talking about ? ......he was at Kulungugu with Nkrumah when the grenade was thrown. The special court even found him not guilty, but Nkrumah had a cry about that result, and instead locked up the judges and had the case re-tried by a kangaroo court, with a result he should have just phoned in personally. Only the 1966 coup saved his life.

As I have said before, I have little doubt that the CIA would gladly back a more pro-western government in Ghana. You called Adjei a ready-made lapdog - based on what, the kangaroo court he was subjected to ? ........Adjei was the Foreign Minister travelling with Nkrumah's party returning from Upper Volta when the grenade attack occured at Kulungugu. He was just as much at risk as Nkrumah. Then a month later he is arrested, sent through the special court, kangaroo court, and spent three years in jail. He didn't do much politically afterwards, so how is he a lap-dog ?

It is difficult for me to visit with everyone, and THEY are the ones who ask when they will see me next, and I am often contacted during my absences. Don't get me wrong, Nkrumah has been and remains the best prez Ghana has ever had by far! However, Nkrumah was never an angel! Ask your parents if they are still alive or anyone who was an adult or young adult during Nkrumah's regime and seek their opinions! I think that guy was good, but he did not remain good throughout. I would say that Nkrumah may have either consciously or unconsciously "borrowed" some of Hitler's ideals - Hitler suppressed all opposition, abolished unions and forbade strike actions, and held a one-man election with a doctored YES or NO vote to try to legitimize his rule, to name a few examples. Your entire "Hitler was white & Nkrumah was black" response is a simpleton's argument, I am completely aware of that fact.

Yes, I am quite aware that his last three books were written from Guinea. He had expected to be returned to power, but when the NLC actually functioned reasonably well, and announced a transitional return to civilian rule, all he could do is find scapegoats. I think he had a sad ending, really, but he should have just allowed free elections, and if he lost, so be it. I actually think his early rule was reasonably positive, but it slowly turned to despotic.

Nkrumah would have returned to office if he had lived, plans were at the ready to bring him back. Lucky for the National Liars Council, he died. The African Revolution is bigger than any one man, even Osageyfo. He would tell you that himself. So, just know that the Pan-African movement cannot be stopped by simply removing a head of state from power. Today, there are millions of "Nkrumahs" around the world. You can believe that. So he's grown bigger since that time.

I have read about all the regimes and governments of Accra, Acheampong, Akuffo, Rawlings, Limann, Rawlings again.........I note that the former CPP cadres had such a high standing in 1979 that any former holder of a position in it's ranks was still banned from running for office, and why they get about 1% of the vote in contemporary elections.......

Its deceptive and false to even make the charge of him as "bitter". That's ridiculous, he was intellectually honest, even self critical of the mistakes he made while being President. No, that won't work. While in Guinea he clearly understood that the condition of the African Revolution had qualitatively changed, and therefore made his analysis to the situation as it actually was. He didn't see Ghana in isolation, but part of an continental pan-african union, and he spoke of it on that level.

He couldn't even face the fact that Akufo-Addo (snr) didn't give a death sentence out to Dr Ako Adjei (because he wasn't guilty in any way !) over the bogus charge of his involvement over the Kulungugu grenade attack, so he had to have the case re-tried in a kangaroo court, and also threw poor Akufo-Addo in prison for doing his job correctly. Then Nkrumah came up with that crap that Dr Busia was involved in the attack, too......BUSIA, the academic, WTF ????

Nkrumah's legacy as a revolutionary leader is not subject to your assessment of what he was. He belongs solely to the masses of his people, understand that. Africans are the ONLY arbiters of what he was to us and to the african soil. His life was dedicated to the liberation and unification of the african continent, and he belongs completely to his people. Thank you for such a thorough response, you've given me a lot of insight. I see what you mean about the difference between his role as a political activist vs. a political leader. That explains a lot. I'm going to read up more on the subject just because I find it all very fascinating. I've never been to Ghana, but I have had friends in the past who were from there, and they were all such happy beautiful people. I doubt that even they would have all the information you've provided here.

Well, most Ghanaians will likely disagree with me. My Ghanaian girlfriend only knows Nkrumah's good points, whereas my host that I stay with when I go there agrees that despite gaining Ghana's independence, it did not give Nkrumah carte blanche to have a one-party state and suspend civil liberties.
Saying that, he did leave a positive legacy - you just need to go to the University Of Ghana or Akosombo Dam to see that !

Your assertions on Osageyfos "bad points" are erroneous, it was the 1964 referendum that brought overwhelming Ghanaian support for the Convention Peoples Party. The masses made the CPP Ghana's national party. The enemies of Nkrumah and his Pan-African objectives could not stand to see a united africa that would not need the "aid" and pateralism of the west. Those C.I.A. backed army and police traitors could not stand the successes of the CPP, and Nkrumah.

Thanks for ready.......I have studied this period at reasonable length, and have also published a detailed biography on our website. I believe that the average opinion of Nkrumah now comes from the Limann then Rawlings periods of rule. I absolutely love Ghana & Ghanaian history, but by pure definition he was running a dictatorship (he banned all opposition), and all five of his Big Six former comrades had been imprisoned (two died there).

As for CIA backing - what support did they provide exactly.....no more than a "if you do it, we'll back the new government"...Nkrumah upheld socialist principles, in the Cold War this was seen as being pro-Soviet.
The Ghana army & police rebelled autonomously, and the NLC declared a pro-western alignment - this was the smartest thing they could do economically, but if there was any direct CIA role in the plot, it must have amounted to less than 100ghc in today's money !

I don't criticize, it's historical fact......there is a certain nostalgia with Nkrumah because he founded modern Ghana, but much of that history has been repackaged - when he was overthrown in 1966, he had long since began to abuse his post, and the coup was a change back in the right direction.......do you deny he had become a dictator ? ....definition, - one party state with no opposition party = dictatorship, any way you slice it, and I find it amazing people still deny that !

It is a historical fact that a democratically elected government was toppled by traitors that took the mandate away from a government illegally. Military (or police) any way you slice it has no mandate to topple ANY government. Nkrumah appeared before the Ghanaian assembly about a week before the coup and said this.

It is interesting that where africans are concerned a military junta in the case of 1966 Ghana, is warranted. But never allowed when one is discussing the historical racist polices that are a main feature of the capitalist bloc nations. I've decided that you're naive. Let me give you a little history lesson. The Preventive Detention Act was orginally created to deal with Nkrumah well before he became the Prime Minister in 1957. As early as 1951 the British colonial government tried to silence him for good by criminalizing him for organizing the masses of Ghana for "Independence Now", and the Positive Action campaign he and others initiated in the country.

Leaders of the UGCC(United Gold Coast Conference) thought they would be the people who would assume "power" at some obscure date(their program) of independence. Which is what the british government and the west in general wanted. But the masses, especially the youth who wanted "self-government now", and this was the call that Osageyfo answered with the creation of the Convention People's Party.

Yeah, and how many of the other UGCC stalwarts from the big six occupied a major position in the NLC after the coup ?.......oh that's right, two died under Nkrumah's preventative detention, so we are left with three that were still alive (and Obetsebi-Lamptey was facing a DEATH SENTENCE for doing precisely squat), so what influence did Pa Willie or Ako Adjei have in a council run by the Ghana Army ? ........very little to do with the events of 1966......

Sure there is poverty in Ghana, but I am very happy when I come back to Ghana and see the improvements that are made......I hate to tell you this, but Ghana IS free, it just needs to keep improving it's infrastructure, but the potential here is plain to see......I created this page for my interest in Ghana-related topics, so people get a better understanding of the country, not for the daft reasons you are dreaming up..........

Any "aid" from countries such as yours is nothing more than neo-colonialist payoffs to puppet governments. It mean nothing to the toiling masses on the streets.
