Hitler was very poor military leader, The Fact the 6th Army could have withdrawn from Stalingrad and then could have counter-attacked. BUT NO! Hitler wanted to be trapped and die like martyrs. Hitler always to stand & fight, Meinstien was mastermind in tactics, He knews it better to give land to the enemy and the best places to defend and counter-attack. If you give land away, The enemy soon has problems with supplies, Then you counter-attack, Hitler just wanted to fight till the death!
I once met an American neo-nazi. He was adamant about Hitler's supreme leadership. He believed that Hitler was let down by his generals and that the war would've been won if everyone had remained loyal to him. Eine Menge Unsinn. No matter what evidence you present to neo-nazis, they choose to not believe it and claim it's manufactured propaganda. Hitler was a corporal whose belief in providence made him think he was omnipotent. Was für eine Schande.
Manstein did have the heart to disobey Hitler. Him and Kleist conducted a retreat from the cuacusus and were both sacked afterwords. Hitler wanted to exocute them, but SS Colonel General Sepp Dietrich convinced him not to.
Interesting parallel mentioning Paulus and Kharkov's Hausser. Hausser disobeyed Hitler's usual order to hold and fight and get surrounded. Just shows you the results professional soldiers make on the battlefield. Hausser and Manstein both performed brilliantly at Kharkov. After the fall of Germany, Paulus was treated like a celeb. Lived comfortably in E. Germany. He was appointed advisor/inspector of Police in East Germanys Dresden. Apparently the soviets trusted him more as a police officer
