  • Nice trees...........

  • Fantastic!

  • Many of the cars would be empty or carrying light product (TV's Electronics etc.) travelling east, travelling west with heavy grain cars, the typical configuration is 4 units up front, 2 in the middle and before the lower tunnel was built at Roger's Pass, they would pick up from 2-4 units as pushers at the back east of the pass. was quite a sight to see them coming out of the mountain.

  • A great video. I have seen a train entering and leaving this tunnel but it wasn't long enough to see in all three places. Well spotted!

  • I DON'T MEAN TO BE RUDE BUT AS HAVING BEEN AN ENGINE MAN (ENGINEER)

I WISH TO COMMENT. THERE IS ONLY ENGINE COMPRISED OF 4 UNITS, THE LEAD LOCOMOTIVE NO. WOULD GIVE THE IDENTITY OF THE TRAIN, SUCH AS 4562 EAST/WEST. AN OLD HOGGER; ANDY

  • Crazy train. A tree fall down between two of the trucks, and they will all fall own.

Very, very impressive long train, and impressive tunnel, oh yes...

  • Awesome dude

  • I have seen this tunnel a few times........once I got lucky like Terry and saw a train going thru it. A unique canadian experience.............and such a long train!!! truly amazing

  • wow! long stack train : 0

  • I think this train was mostly empties otherwis they would have ineed needed more locos. I love that train spot.

  • This would be 116, last stack out of Vancouver on a giving day, usually around 6500ft and any where from 6000 to 7000 tons.

  • @terryrowsell The cars are headed east from the coast (Vancouver). They wouldn't be packing empty containers, two high, eastbound over the rockies, I don't think. They intersperse additional locos throughout the length of the train. That is one long train.

It would be nice if Parks Canada would trim the tops of some trees to maintain the view of the tunnel.

  • @Blogzer lol Great minds think alike. I wish that the trees were out of the way so my kids could see what I used to see.

We used to be able to go out on that wooden walkway past the bathrooms, but the last couple times, they had it taped off. I wonder if the walkway is even there still.

I wish the trees were shorter on the other side of the highway too. I tell my kids that the train has gone through the upper spiral and is up there now. My wife gives me a look like I'm full of it. :)

  • On a train this long it is not uncommon to see at least 4 engines in the front, two in the middle and at least one at the end. A train must have a minimum of 80 cars to loop over itself

  • Are there any cab views of inside the spiral tunnels?

  • That I would love to see!

  • I work for Canadian Pacific, but the farthest west I have ever gone is the laggan subdivision. If you have ever been there. Nice scenery, but I don't have a lot of valuable seconds to look around.

People ask me for vids and pictures, but I can't hold a camera and drive at the same time. Dash cams are not allowed either.

    I would if I could. :(

  • I went through both tunnels at 2 1/2 mph on a Rail Grinder a few times!!!

Being I'm from the states not to many people in America has seen these up close!!!

The best was going into the Mcdonald and Conaught Tunnels!!!

Something I hope I would get to do again in my lifetime.

I did these in 1989 and now I'm a Engineer for the BNSF.

  • Neat. I bet you have stories.

  • i was there july 2007 also.

  • My wife and I just came back from holidays in BC. We were driving past the spiral tunnels and stopped in to see it. There were no trains going through at the time. It was great to see your video of a train going through. Thanks for posting it.

  • You are quite welcome.

  • ive been through those tunnels numerous times by freight and passenger. its kinda cool to be able to come out of the upper tunnel and be able to look down and see the tail end of the train

  • How many power units are involved...looks real long

  • I remember watching this tunnel with my dad back in the late 70s or early 80s when we were out in BC... he's a big train buff. My 2 yr old son is now absolutely nuts for trains and I thought I might find a vid of this... he LOVES it! Thanks for posting this!

  • You are very welcome.

  • So long of a train and such a steep grade / incline, that helper motors at the end are recommended! Man, id love to tour that line trhough there! :D

  • stuffs so cool

  • thats trippy lol

  • Yes, I caught the mistake, but only after many people had viewed, so I left it. Silly me. Maybe the world will end at 7-7-7. ;)

  • The video says July 7, 2007.

You got a time machine ?

    :-)

    It's not July 7 yet.

When it is, the odometer for idiots will click to 7-7-7 and lots of people will get psychosomatic tingles.

  • I just arrived in Golden, BC recently. I'm working here for a few months. I'd never seen such long trains before, but now I see trains over a mile long quite frequently. It's the main route from Vancouver to Calgary

  • How long do you think that train would be? Are the trains very frequent through here?

  • This train would have to be about 1 and two thirds of a mile long. Perhaps a little longer than normal. I have stopped here to watch trains a number of times and never saw one this long before, though they are now apparently more common at this length. This is the CP main line so naturally it is busy. Thanks for stopping by! Terry

  • Very cool! Driving through them would be amazing!

    Cheers,

    Terry

  • i was part of a steel gang working that section in the summer of 2006. it is amazing to see the tunnels, but i got to drive through them on my motor car (track unit). it really makes one appreciate all the modern equipment we have, as building them was dangerous work.

  • I simply set up at the public viewing stand that has been built beside the highway. You can see it in a quick pan at the end of the video. It has restrooms, interpretation planels and displays. It has become, basically, a roadside attraction.

    Cheers,

    Terry

  • Just curious Terry, How long did it take you to set this up and get it? I commend you for finding a place where you could see everything through the trees. Years ago, it was easy to see this but now the trees are too big, and don't you cut a tree in the Parks!!!

  • Yes, on the North end of the Island. They still run logs out of the mountains. Last one left.

    Cheers, Terry

  • Very nice, Terry. Is that log railway on Vancouver Island still running?

  • Oh, and one more thing....your daughter and you would be MUCH safer on a passenger train through here. Do you know how many die EVERY week on the stretch of Trans Canada Hwy that parallels the route between Lake Louise and Kamloops??? Many continue to die in automobiles through here, and widening the road in places makes little difference! Bring back Via Rail thru here. Now!

  • Freight trains are fun to watch, but how about RIDING a train through here, like in the days when Via Rail Canada travelled this route? This MUST be renewed, and to hell with the private Rocky Mountaineers' monopoly on CP tracks. Just who delegated them to be the deciding voice on whether AFFORDABLE, ACCESSIBLE service (Via) is brought back to this route?

  • Sorry, the date I saw the train was July 2006, NOT 2007 (which has not happened yet!). Where was my head? I must have been enthralled with the train action. Thanks for those who pointed it out. I'll re-edit privately, but leave this vid on YouTube as is.

    Cheers,

    Terry
