They were a couple of killers. The guy accidentally broke a bottle of pills and failed to realize that the pills had fallen into an open container of alcohol. The pills caused fainting and memory loss. They drank the alcohol, fell unconscious, and temporarily suffered from total retrograde amnesia. They awoke with no memories. They were the sort of people to drink when stressed, so they drank more of the same alcohol and the cyle repeated, possibly all night long.
