I think that Goldie did a great job in conducting. I am a professional TV and Film composer, conducting live orchestras in the UK and US, and my theory is this. Music is music, if you make it over technical, its then just a pain in the arse! Music is to be enjoyed, not scrutinized! And i can't professionally read sheet music either!
I agree with @jagang31. Being a conductor isn't about acting. Goldie acts as a conductor but isn't actually conducting the orchestra since he cannot read music. Part of the conductor's job is also to give a sould to a masterpiece that's only written on paper. Goldie wouldn't be able to do that. Still, he's a great artist and I appreciate all he did for Hip Hop and D&B.
@jagang31 and also about 90% of people watching this know Goldie from drum & bass and dnb fans as am i so it is bringing more fans to classical music ,which i think outwaves what you just said
@jagang31 ok, you made a good point. Well i never knew he did this and i might take years of practice, but at least he gave it a dam good try and hes brave enough to do is as well a writting piece, that takes a lot before you even start. He has obviously been coached. From what i know of this guy he does not do these things by halves and he just would not go out there with a stick and wave it and make a fool out of himself, now would he? and you notice is was short piece
More crap!!! More than worthless, like I said before this guy has nothing to do with being a conductor!! This is television hype at its worst!!! If you can't read music you have no business in front of an orchestra, written notes, and bars on a page do not lie, your memory often does!!! It takes years of study, and practice to become a competent musician, let alone the additional time to learn how to conduct! Letting a rank amature in front is shameful!!!!!
Okay - having sung the Carmina Burana twice now (soprano I), I agree with DrNoth -- the chorus carried this in a big way. At the obdurat, the orchestra began to speed up their tempo just a bit and he did seem to bring that down, but there was no real direction from Goldie for the chorus...
@guitarnoize they practice on small groups of musicians (quartets etc.) for most of the week, then on the actual day they do a run with the orchestra before the show.
I think Goldie is an excellent conductor, but I do think that Sue deserved to win by far, if only based on their final performances.
He's still awesome though, his vision and passion for music shine through each and every performance - if he was a little bit more technical he would have blown everyone else out of the water :)
You're not wrong about Goldie's raw ability - he's outstanding - but let's not sell Sue Perkins too short. She equally has a natural feel for music, as well as being able to master the technicalities.
I'm glad someone had the idea for "Maestro", because seeing Sue and Goldie produce such incredible performances week on week has been a real eye (and ear) opener.
Kudos to them both, and I hope neither treats this experiment as a one-off, because they're both excellent.

I've never seen this show, do the contestants have to rehearse the orchestra or do they just conduct on the night?

Amazon? Just put "carmina burana levine" into the search box, and that'll take you to one of the best recordings ever.

I think Sue Perkins is a far better conductor in terms of technicality, but she has a fraction of this guy's raw talent. Fucking seamless.

Perhaps, although Goldie mucked it up a bit this week. I'm so glad he stayed, though. He has real potential, as does Sue. It'll be a close call.
Or maybe Jane Asher will surprise us all and destroy both of them. :)
AuthenticPunkDance 3 years ago
...if it finally sinks in that she's meant to be conducting the orchestra, not cast a spell on them. Jane, dear - that's a baton, not a magic wand ;)
