This is probably a very silly question, but on slash chords, what scale would the improviser play on. Like if it were a B/C#, would the improviser just solo off of what's in the bass?
@1979saxman Yes - the bass note is the one to pay particular attention to - generally, it should be regarded as the root of the chord. In your example, the chord is likely to be some sort of C# chord. The other note (here B) usually refers to a triad (here B major triad) and when added to the bass note, creates a voicing for a C#9sus chord. So C# mixolydian would be an acceptable choice for this situation.
@1979saxman Pianists and guitarists are especially likely to think of chords like this. Possibly this method of naming often quite complex chord voicings comes from the sheet music published for 'pop' songs where most players are unlikely to be familiar with such chords as C9(#11) yet could quite easily play a D/C chord. With jazz leadsheets it is important for chord players to play the first part of the slash chord quite literally - in D/C play a D major triad-not your own special DMaj voicing
I wanted to say that I am very very impressed. I have been looking for a LONG time for this version.. and you played it SPOT ON... just like you said.. just as you heard it... I agree.. Thank you so much for your posts.. as it is always enjoyable.. Eager to watch and learn more.. :) I have played keyboards for over 20 years.. but always eager to learn Billy Joel's songs.. you are quite talented.. Thanks for what you do.
seems you are a chord specialist ! I like this stuff very much, one of my favourite tunes. Extra bonus point for the descending chromatic counterpoint. Go on.
i am ever and ever again left behind breathless... I play myself and people like my playing, but whn I see and hear your unbelievable skills and feeling I have to bow in front of you and say thank you for all these intruiging videos. No lesson could teach and show more than your videos. Thank you thank you thank you..... Best regards
Each time I hear you Doug I learn to appreciate your music more &more. It's comforting to know that there are wonderful musicians like yourself, elevating the sonsrous art to celestial realms. I hope your 9hour video is still available, I will willingly order it, even though my instrument is the accordion.

This is fine if you like tired, sleepy white jazz with no balls. Let's see, I'll just use a little bit of someone else's reharmonization followed by a safe diatonic bullshit solo with no energy. Sheeple will eat it up on youtube and tell me how great I am. They will say I am amazing, that I have mastered jazz and computer technology. Wake up people! I like a woman I can bounce up and down on!
I was introduced to similar approaches with Dennis Sandole 40+ years ago but I have never been able to sit with others who had these ideas under their fingers to more than a few tunes. Great stuff., but untrained ears can't hear it. Great things are meant for those who find them and the energy to love them. Thanks
Wow, your videos are amazingly informative, you have such an immense knowledge of harmony and musical concepts! I'm mainly a guitar player but seeing this all on the piano with notation and chords is really helpful, thanks!
No, actually I was asking about the song on a video called, "A Mistery for Jazz". (I thought I was pretty clear) But your a little late anyway, we solved it. It's called "Time Will Tell". Check it out, nice recording.
Really beautiful treatment of this classic. I always admire the way you wonderfully mix single note RH lines with RH octaves and block chords in addition to your varied dynamics. It makes for such an interesting solo and enjoyable listening experience.
This is a lush, beutiful, intelligent reharmonization. I have many of the Maybeck CD's. I'm going to order this one. Well chosen tune, well played. Excellent work. *****
Beautiful work

the very fact that you use the word "sheeple" brands you as a class A cockmonkey.
please feel free to demonstrate your ballsy,dangerous,wide-awake non-diatonic approach to this tune.
