One absolutely essential thing needed for any stereographic technique that EVERYONE seems to forget to mention is that you need to have vision in both eyes.
My wife is blind in one eye, and from her point of view, everything is in 3d. When people would speak of 3d, she'd say, "Looks the same to me." My brother has tunnel vision. As children it would boggle him how hard it was to sneak up on me, while I almost always caught him unaware.
They don't realize they see differently than most of us
I got an interest in making cross veiwin pics cuz of the highly anticipated Nintendo3DS which doesn't require glasses to veiw video games in 3D or the cross eyed method! checkit out!
Place your finger centrally on the screen, between the left and right images. Focus with your eyes on your finger and slowly bring your finger back towards your nose. Keep looking at your finger, but be aware that in the background there are THREE images ... the one in the middle is the 3D one. Does that help?
Here's another technique ... place your finger on the screen between the two images and look at your finger. Slowly bring your finger closer towards you and keep looking at your finger ... in the background you'll see a 3rd image appear between the outer 2 ... this is the image that will be in 3D. Good luck. Try Google for other information :)
That is because you are used to setting the focus of your eyes according to the angle at which they're set. To use this technique you need to learn to separate these two functions. The Magic Eye books need a similar technique. I'm planning to buy a device which uses mirrors to enable viewing ... I'll report back when I've got it as it might be the way forward for some people. But if you practice I'm sure you'll get it :)
