@deturnman, Hi, I did not even know anything about your aunt, I looked up the name on google because it is my name!!!! But I grew up listening to this kind of music because I stayed at my grandma's house alot and so when I heard it I was immediately attracted to her. Much respect to you and your aunt!!!!! ;-)
I miss you Aunt rose. Although I wasn't a Musician when you were alive, all those piano lessons you gave me payed off. You always told me that I would become a musician someday and you were right. I will carry on our musical tradition.RIP now with uncle Eddie......................love you Joseph Pierre
If you've ever heard the Four Seasons sing "Don't Think Twice" or "Lonesome Road" as the Wonder Who, you can easily tell that Frankie Valli, the group's lead singer, patterned his falsetto voice after Rose Murphy's.
I agree 100%. You can hear a lot of similarities there...
It seems to me that Billie is the only jazz singer that some people are familiar with so she's frequently the one referenced with current singers that have a jazzy twist to their style. Frankly, the comparison doesn't fit nearly as much as people use it.
Yeah, people compare Badu to Billie H. now without even thinking-- they are so used to hearing that comparison. Really, it
s Madeleine Peyroux & Karen Dalton who/whom are more like Billie H. vocally.
Also, when I listen to Badu's records I don't hear Billie; however when I listen to some of Billie H's songs, I find myself saying: "I heard a little Badu in that note." But it's not enough for a full blown comparison.
I've not heard of Karen Dalton (I'll be sure to check her out), but I can say you are DEAD ON with Madeleine Peyroux... she's so close to Billie it almost ruins it for me, if that makes any sense at all.
That makes sense. I heard a M. Peyroux song last night on the radio and the "Billie-ness" did seem almost too forced. With Karen Dalton, I think the comparison is more on because I read somewhere that she hated being compared to Billie H.
My fav. Karen Dalton song is her singing: "I love you more than words can say"
"Busy Line" was Rose Murphy's signature song but her big hit was a 1947 redo of the great 1927 song by Jimmy McHugh, "I Can't Give You Anything But Love."
Frankie Valli was influenced by Murphy's vocal style. Listen to any of his big songs but, especially, his cover of "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right."

People compare Erykah Badu to Billie, but to me Erykah B.'s style of singing is more like this

Stunned!
Had this sing by the Pipkins on the "Gimme Dat Ding" LP.
Never heard the original.
JUST when you think you've heard it all. . . something from the past knocks you out.
WOW!
Many Thanks!
