Does old barn-wood contain chemicals – you were wearing a respirator while cutting?

@mdmccat while surfacing the wood(planing and using the jointer) there could be chemicals that got onto the wood during it`s life, but once you get past that there is little to be worried about, but it is a good habit to always use a respirator while working with wood even if it`s just to keep dust out of your lungs.
