Christ, that was a horrible demonstration. At least unsubmerge the tube so we can clearly see the process.

It's not so much the reflective properties, it's just that the glass has the same refractive index as the oil so light doesn't bend as it passes between the tube and the oil.

It has the same reflective properties (I believe.)
We did something like this a few days back in AP Chem with a silicon type substance.
