He isn't the abusive type definitely. But I feel there is a great mismatch of personalities between me and him. I am very new to grad school. I just finished one semester. At this stage, I expect some hand-holding and spoon feeding. But my adviser is just plain busy, doesn't spend time with me and hides behind the usual excuse - "You are a researcher. You must be independent". I agree with his argument. But I feel it is too early to apply that principle on me.
Yeah, unfortunately some PIs tend to throw newbies into the deep end of the pool right from the start. I'm starting a site for students to rate their PIs and help others make informed decisions about which group fits them best.
My adviser falls in the 2nd category - the tenured professor....always busy guy...
