Thanks for the video! My dad raced stocks there in 75 and I was lucky enough to drive in 3 demolition derbies(cops & robber) there before I was 18. Ascot closed shortly after that.
My father Ed Gahler used to race figure 8 in the early 1960s. In fact he was president of ascot racing association at Glendale in 1964. I used to have an amazing collection of photos and 8mm videos all of which were unfortunetly destroyed in a fire some years ago.So if anyone reading this happens to have any photos from that era I sure would like to see them'
I lived next door to Rick Goudy who drove for Pratt Racing and then the Tamale Wagon for the Morales Bros. They had parties where Jimmie Oskie , Dean Thompson , and all the great drivers from the CRA sprint cars would come by. After Rick and his family moved , Frank Loverock moved in. He had a Camaro in the NASCAR Winston West series and he raced at Ascot very often. I remember those days from the 70s with a smile. It was a great time in my life.
@metal1982 I "wrenched" for TIGER TOM PISTONE, in Chicago, in the early '50 's. He made it out here, to Ascot for a number of dates...and racing events, too!
Talking about a blast from the past , My Dad took me there often , I loved the figure 8 races.I also saw Evil Knievel jump 18 cars and we were there watching the races on the night that man first stepped on the moon . I was watching the tv at the snack bar ,and staring up at the moon at the same time . Those were indeed the good old days .
Awesome vid. In the early 60's my father was one of the ambulance drivers at the track and he would take me and my brother to the track with him in the ambulance. I remember many times being left at the track while he took someone to the hospital. Fun times. Thanks for the vid.
The address was 18300 South Vermont Avenue Gardena, Ca. but many of their ads proclaimed to be located where the San Diego (405), the Harbor (110), and the Riverside (91) freeways collide.
I also grew up going to Ascot. My father took my brothers and I there almost every chance he got. I even remember the Thanksgiving night of the last race. My father said he could only afford 1 ticket and had to leave us behind. After the closing there was no relief until I was almost out of high school, and my dad told us that a 1/2 mile clay oval had opened up in Perris. Now that Im a dad I can't wait to take my boys to the sprints. We are going for their first race this July 4th in Perris.
Thank you! I attended sprinters at Ascot from 1975 until 1986, and can never EVER forget the calss that was Dean Thompson. This video helps keep this iconic track alive.
I grew up at this track....was a short trip on the 405 from Hawthorne. It was so close, I could hear the sprints and whatnot in the distance some nights. But Sunday nights were the bomb: Street Stocks and Figure Eight races. Earl Cox, "Mr. Ed" Ferro, Rusty Stewart, Mike Kanke...I loved that track. I miss it a ton.
I grew up at Ascot. My father was Harry Schooler, the promoter who put on the races and brought the Demolition Derby to the west coast. It was great to see this video. My dad died last year and as I went through his and my mom's things, I found many old programs from the early days at the stadium. Thanks for posting this!
1983 to 1989 #63 and #87. Raced in the 200 lap enduro with Butch Gilliand and my partner at work won his car in the raffle. Butch came that monday and bought the car back. I guess he had more than the $500 limit in the car. {David Gilliands Dad} Thanks for the memories nice job
nice work - if you need more pics from the late 70's with the vw dune buggies and sedans I have em - also have several programs with rick mears in the lie up
I live far away in Europe but i have a lot of footage from Ascot, seems that every 70's TV show filmed an episode there and let's not forget all the cultmovies like Pit Stop or Fireball 500. Would like to see more of Ascot. Cheers from Luxembourg
Great to see the old memories come back to life. Went as a kid to Sprint car races when they had no roll cages. Jimmy Oskie, Rick Goudy, Ronnie Rea. My father and brother still go. My brother John Loya has his room decrorated with almost every picture ever published. His scrap books are second to none.
My brother raced tt & flattrack in the 70's there.
The day shot looking across track from grandstands took me right back like yesterday.
never forget the nite my brother hit the wall on front straightway at startline when locked bars with another rider. Thought he died...just broke collar bone.
Spectated in the 70's, the demo derby and the sprint cars. Once our scout troup all went and a wreck caused pieces of the car to come over the low fence into the crowd, no one was hurt (lucky) so it was treated as no big deal.
I worked my way up from the 125 Juniors to the open class experts. Late 70's to early 80's. I'm 49 and I'm racing again but now in the vintage vet class.
I really miss those days! (Chris used to hit on my girl friends. He drove a Crown Volvo back then.
My fathers friend raced sprint cars and buggys at Ascot during the 70's, I was just a little kid at the time, loved it. We always thought that it was a little creepy, funny and ironic that there was a graveyard across the street
Good job. My Dad (Roger "Boots" Fisher" #146) raced for almost a dozen years, mostly the 70's and into early eighties. He raced stock cars, mostly figure 8. I have a lot of fond memories from there.
Nice show! My dad and uncle raced there in 1975 and I ran 3 'cops and robbers' demolition derbies there the three years before Ascot closed..this brought back some awesome memories! Thanks!
I worked for Chris in the 90s in Anaheim at Ascot Slic Trac. I helped run the go cart track. Chris always did take care of his employees. Just thought Id let you know. Good videos.
I used to go see motocross racing there. Honda XR75s was the bike of choice i think.

I remember as kid in the 60's that the races use to be telecast on KTLA channel 5 and once again in 1975 on channel 13.
