What I'm "parroting" isn't an assessment from 10 years ago, but a current one. Not my own words to be sure, but absolutely accurate ones from another site.
How does a bucket of oil 5 to 10 years from now bring down the prices tomorrow, next month or next year? Explain it to me.
Good job "thehatbloke" paroting Bill Clinton from 10 years ago. We wouldn't be in this mess had he not vetoed offshore an ANWR drilling. Who cares what you think anyway with a name like bloke you must from England. You know, that empire that General George Washington kicked out of town many years ago. This is America, we dont quit or appease like panty waist Europeans!
Due to the high price of oil, existing drilling ships are "booked solid for the next five years," and demand for deepwater rigs has driven up the price of such ships. Oil companies just don't have the resources to explore oil fields in the OCS.
6. Production would be expensive, would not start for a long time, and would have no short-term effect on oil prices.
According the Energy Information Administration, it would take at least five years for oil production to begin. EIA predicted that there would be *no significant effect on oil production or price until nearly 20 years after leasing begins.*
5. Drilling could lock us in to a future of expensive gasoline.
By committing to costly recovery, oil companies are betting that oil prices (and gas prices) will stay high enough to justify their investments. Opening the Outer Continental Shelf could never bring us back to $2-a-gallon gas, but would ensure that companies that develop the newly available oil have an interest in keeping gas prices high enough to justify their investments.
4. Offshore drilling would have an "insignificant" effect on long-term prices.
Offshore drilling in sensitive areas would increase domestic oil production by 7 percent by 2030 compared to a reference case, according to the EIA. But "because oil prices are determined on the international market...any impact on average wellhead prices is expected to be insignificant."
3. Oil companies have not utilized the leases they have now.
Why open up new areas to drilling when oil companies hold over 4,000 undeveloped leases in the western Gulf of Mexico? What's more, the government already leases 44 million acres offshore, of which only 10.5 million—or one quarter—are producing oil or gas.
The U.S. oil supply-demand balance is insurmountable. We have less than 2 percent of the world's known reserves, yet use 25 percent of its oil. Even if we drilled off of every beach, and inside every national park, refuge, and forest, we could not produce enough oil to offset our growing demand.
1. We can't drill our way out of the energy crisis.
According to a report by the House Committee on Natural Resources Majority Staff:
"Between 1999 and 2007, the number of drilling permits issued for development of public lands increased by more than 361 percent, yet gasoline prices have also risen dramatically, contradicting the argument that more drilling means lower gasoline prices. There is simply no correlation between the two."

The gas-tax holiday is the biggest bullshit gimmick idea ever conceived in relation to energy policy.
We need to RAISE gas taxes, not LOWER them. Lowering will send a false message to Americans that gas is "cheap" again and they will increase needless consumption (which will drive up prices even more!). We waste so much oil on pointless things. We need to set a price floor of around 4.50 a gallon and keep it there. This will encourage people to conserve and buy more fuel-efficient vehicles.
This video is a classic example of bait-and-switch spin. It begins with reference to "conservation", but ends criticising Obama for failing to make the ecologically disastrous steps of drilling for oil in sensitive places, approving nuclear waste, and dropping taxes on petrol to encourage people to use MORE. Dropping gas taxes is simple populism - it makes no sense either economically or ecologically.
We are so far behind in oil production. England, France and China are drilling like psychopaths because there's so much money in it and to try to increase supply so that prices will go down. But the Democrats don't want us to be part of the solution...they just want us to ride our bikes I guess.

Thanks RNC, boy you're so smart. An ad telling America that all Republicans who beleive Global Warming is a hoax are wrong, and McCain is dividing us? Why not just call yourselves the DNC? What's the difference?
Um... and I mean UM!!!! I'm a conservative, I do not believe in Global Warming any more than I believe July will be hotter than Decemeber. What is going on? Did you see the light bulb? What a joke. Who can I vote for, a Liberal like Obama, or a Democrat like McCain?

I had to laugh the other day on the news when a reporter was talking to an environmentalist in front of the ocean. The environmental was pointing out over the ocean where you might just see an oil rig way out in the ocean should they build rigs. He was saying how dangerous it would be to have oil ships going back and forth to the rig. What did they see? An oil tanker from another country bringing foreign oil to a US refinery.
Alright Obama,..keep moving towards the center on issues my friend,..can`t win on far left ideas. I hear "code pink" is not very happy with you Obama. Careful with those dirty tampons they like to throw if you don`t follow through with their far left plans you promised them.
Any guy who votes liberal is needs to get testosterone shots. If you do maybe someday you will be able to think like a guy. Right now you think like a chick. Chicks can be excused for being emotional. Guys? Sorry you just look femmy.
and MacCane isn't following the party line? If US owned oil companies pulling oil from US land, leased from the US government would reduce their prices for US consumption I believe the rest of the companies would also reduce their prices in the US....they don't do this because...?
Obama IS for nuclear energy! Gas taxes pay for road repair and suspending them would save the average American 12 dollars a year! The oil companies have leases in place, they can drill anytime but are not doing it! McNasty is a liar!
John Mccain was a social democrat up until he got the nomination. He might have my vote, if he could explain why he switched positions on abortion, torture, taxes, etc. These are issues that define a man, and to flip flop on them to get votes does not go over well with me.
yeah, i know...after 8 fucked up years of dick and bush, either it takes guts or just utter ignorance and fuckin' stupidity to vote for doubletalk mcbush!!!
For Obama's energy plan check out: ?v=abGlr9sTdEg and ?v=Yw2gbiW1Oqs (the last one is a longer video covering many issues, the energy stuff begins at about 25:55).
So tell us more about the magical energy solutions Obama is proposing and what the hell we're going to run our cars on. There aren't any, at least not yet. DRILL!
What Fucking left wing asshole is the president of the country idiot? Your get your facts straight! Bush has overturned almost every environmental law since he became president! Look it Fucking up! Look up the Clear Skies act of 2003. Cheney meeting behind closed doors with oil companies to come up with our energy policy! Stop getting your new from Fox!
Shouldn't you be playing with dirt mr environmental wacko! The Earth will destroy us before we destroy it...ice age ring a bell! Public policy will not do anything to save the planet, all that does is take more taxpayer money. wtfoof, if you were any smarter, you would be a rock. Were you born stupid or did you have to work on that. I think the best part of you ran down the crack of your momma ass. I think you;ve been cheated.
Maybe before proposing more drilling, you might want to check that there are ships available to build the wells. There aren't. They are booked out for years and take years to build. Oops.
Already, 16 new drill-ships are scheduled to be delivered to oil companies this year — more than double the number delivered over the last six years combined. In fact, 75 ultra-deepwater rigs should be delivered from 2008 to 2011, according to ODS-Petrodata, a firm that tracks drilling rigs.
Eight of which are already under contract for periods ranging from four to seven years once they leave the shipyards. He expects to receive the ships between the beginning of 2009 and the end of 2010.
Sorry you flunk this week's reading comprehension test. That company is only producing 9 of the 16 ships, 8 of which are already under contract. The disposition of the other 7 ships, made by other companies, is not disclosed.
I did not break then down by company. And if 16 are to be delivered to multiple companies and 8 are under contract the math would leave 8 that are not under contract no matter what company made them. Even you seem to not know what is up with the remaining 8. And don't forget the 75 total before the end of 2011 that are probably not under contract.
I dunno what to tell you "Over three-quarters of the drill-ships under construction already have been contracted to oil companies eager to benefit" is pretty darn clear.
Also pretty clear from another article is: "Meeting the company's ambitious goals could be a challenge. ... Dahlman Rose ... said completing a recent order for 12 of the so-called deepwater rigs ... "will be a trying task"
Oil is already expanding as fast as it can no need for new leases, as you'd expect with these prices.
But do we know where these oil companies that have these contracted ships are going to drill?
If I were an oil company I would lock in a few ships before I start taking bids on locations where I will drill. Possible the US, as I'm sure we will be in the mix to give US contracts to oil companies that have contracted some of those ships.
Does that make sense? The oil drilling business is expected to boom for the next dozen years or so.
Anybody else see the irony? They're praising John McCain for bucking the Republicon party's ideas, then bashing Obama for bucking the Republicon party's ideas. Hilarious!
Every economist believes the gas tax is a bad idea. The Republican party has chosen again to benefit the rich at the expense of the American people. Under Republican rule, the debt increased to 9 trillion dollars. Top 5 administrations in increasing the debt: 1. W 1; 2. W 2; 3. Daddy Bush; 4. Reagan 5. Reagan. The gas tax will increase consumption temporarily, and put the money in oil company pockets, that's not change and not good for America. Say No to 4 more years. Obama 08
No doubt the current ethanol industry is not sustainable. But we will be glad we built it and that it is American owned as the crops and processing technology changes.
The next step might be maize. We'll see how fast the cellulosic plants scale. Eventually it will be nice to move to a coproduct of food production instead of the food crops themselves.
"New biodiesel crop Jatropha taking off in S.W. Florida"
Already with this "Jatropha", farmers have planted this in place of Orange Trees. Farmers will get paid more for Jatropha than oranges. Once Jatropha takes off Farmers will plant it in place of corn, wheat, and other food crops.
Coproduct of food production are not likely. You need the seed part to creat the oils product to turn into fuel.
And McCain is not against renewable energy, it's just not the issue to solve today's gas prices. That is a 15 year in the future issue. Obama has never given a date when his alternative fuel will be available. Experts say Obama's alternate fuels are at least 15 years away before they are even close to cost effective.
More domestic drilling will not have an effect on supply for 10 years. And it still won't bring prices down, because it will be a drop in worldwide supply.
A gas tax holiday will have no effect on long-term prices and will lose billions for road maintenance and environmental clean-up.
Alternative energy. Obama wants to put $1.5b into alternative energy; McCain offers a $300m new electrical car battery gimmick.
It's balanced only in so far as none of his ideas work.
Ah, the "we won't see it for 10 years argument". Dems have been using that argument for 10 years. It sure would be nice to see that increased supply now, eh?
Agree on gas tax.
Obama's 'alternative fuels' doesn't put a dent in energy costs unless you completely redo our energy infrastructure. Only the market can do that, not more government spending.
It sure would be nice to see that increased supply. But the fact remains that drilling didn't commence 10 years ago and it will still take another 10 years to come on line. That's why McCain is coining the spurious phrase 'energy security' - and occasionally 'energy independence' - when he realized that no engineer or economist in the world was going to back him up on claims that the extra supply would affect prices by a cent either today, tomorrow or any time in the future.
Lowering the expected future price of oil also lowers the current price. Would you want to hold onto a commodity that will be worth less in ten years when offshore oil starts to be pumped? Increasing domestic American consumption in the future harms the solidarity of OPEC (whose agreements are non-binding among members).
As for "no economist backing the idea", this is just a DNC talking point (true on the gas tax holiday, untrue on this matter). Why do Dems have to be just as stupid as Repubs?
Besides hearing it from brainless democrats, where do you get 10 years minimum to produce oil. Because 5 companies were asked that actually do the drilling say just one year for best case scenario to three years for worse case scenario.
Republicans of ALL PEOPLE talking about saving the environment when their voting record shows other wise. Give me a break. How is "off shore drilling" conserving the environment? Idiots.
Our technology is advanced enough that you can barely tell there has been oil drilling done. You environmental idiots would rather save a spotted toad while our economy could go down the tubes when gas gets so high that no one can afford it. Yeah, real brilliant. Chucky Schumer of NY demands that the Saudis produce more oil and then turns around and forbids us to. Who is the hypocrite?
No you neocon idiots, need to fix the problem first. Prices are high, because of our meddling in the Middle East, esp. in Iraq. What happened to the Bush Administration's stance that the war would be paid for by the oil profits after invading Iraq??? Our economy is down the tubes because of this unending war which had NOTHING to do with 9/11. Don't destroy the environment just because you right wing neocons can't fix the problem but would rather treat the symptoms.
I can still afford gas. But maybe it is because as an environmentalist, I bought a hybrid long before you Republicans even started to make fun of them and say everyone who owns them loves spotted toads.
Republicans quadrupled the price of oil since AWOL Bush took over. It was less than $25 a barrel in Jan. 2001. Now those crooks claim they're going to lower the price? What a bunch of liars. I'm never voting Republican -- never.
"Republicans quadrupled the price of oil since AWOL Bush took over." Wow. You really are stupid if you think that the republicans set the price of oil on the international market. You might want to read the news that shows China and India is increasing demand and this is driving up prices. Or you could just remain a moron and blame teh evil Boosh.
No, gas has almost doubled in price since the Democratic majority took over. It was just over 2.00 a gallon and Reid and Pelosi ran on a plan to reduce gas prices then. Under THEIR leadership gas has almost doubled because they restrict domestic drilling. We have more oil than all the Middle East nations combined. Get some brains.
Oh right, and when they said that they would lower prices, should we have took that to mean, we will double them? The Democrats answer like Waters, Durbin, and Hinchey are to berate the oil companies and nationalize them. That would align with their socialist agenda in every other way.
But, there's enough blame to go around on both sides. MC's calls for a gas tax holiday is nonsense, and his "plan" does nothing for anybody in the near term (next 10 yrs). BO has no plan at all; just party-line refusal to even consider nuclear or more drilling.
We need a bi-partisan committee to look at ALL options. Everything needs to be on the table.
Excomm: I've seen the vid on Youtube where Obama discusses energy, including nuclear power. But, like many of his opinions, he uses soft language (to facilitate later flip-flops) like "it needs to be part of the equation".
We'll see what happens, but I'll eat my hat if we build any new nuclear power plants under Obama.
BO's only reason for existence is his position as "a new kind of politician" and "words matter", and of course his message of "hope" and "change".
BO's numerous flip-flops directly contradict the foundation of his message and the very reason he won the primary in the first place. Instead of being a genuinely new type of pol, it appears more and more that he's just the same old weasel-wording shapeshifting lizard type of pol.
You can say the same about McCain. He was and is (in some circles) known as "The Maverick", not your typical politician, willing to stand on principles. Now he seems very much like your typical politician. Using gimmicks and flipping wildly back to the party line. Some maverick.
Everything you said is correct. But, you still don't see my point.
Obama has no record to warrant anybody's vote. Except...his promise he's a "new kind of pol" that will bring fundamental change to D.C. and "fix the system".
Obama's flip-flops put that lofty rhetoric to the lie; there's nothing "special" about him at all, just another pol. And if that's true, why on earth would I vote for him? W/o his "specialnes" he's just a rookie senator with charisma.
Everything you said is correct. I just think Obama would be a much better president. And I was rooting for McCain in 2000 and would've voted for him over Gore.

Maybe before proposing more drilling, you might want to check that there are ships available to build the wells. There aren't. They are booked out for years and take years to build. Oops.
Epic Fail.
skids7682 3 years ago
Not so Epic!
ClassicFIHD 3 years ago
And only 8 of the 16 are under contract.
Eight of which are already under contract for periods ranging from four to seven years once they leave the shipyards. He expects to receive the ships between the beginning of 2009 and the end of 2010.
ClassicFIHD 3 years ago
Sorry you flunk this week's reading comprehension test. That company is only producing 9 of the 16 ships, 8 of which are already under contract. The disposition of the other 7 ships, made by other companies, is not disclosed.
skids7682 3 years ago
I did not break then down by company. And if 16 are to be delivered to multiple companies and 8 are under contract the math would leave 8 that are not under contract no matter what company made them. Even you seem to not know what is up with the remaining 8. And don't forget the 75 total before the end of 2011 that are probably not under contract.
ClassicFIHD 3 years ago
I dunno what to tell you "Over three-quarters of the drill-ships under construction already have been contracted to oil companies eager to benefit" is pretty darn clear.
Also pretty clear from another article is: "Meeting the company's ambitious goals could be a challenge. ... Dahlman Rose ... said completing a recent order for 12 of the so-called deepwater rigs ... "will be a trying task"
Oil is already expanding as fast as it can no need for new leases, as you'd expect with these prices.
skids7682 3 years ago
True,
But do we know where these oil companies that have these contracted ships are going to drill?
If I were an oil company I would lock in a few ships before I start taking bids on locations where I will drill. Possible the US, as I'm sure we will be in the mix to give US contracts to oil companies that have contracted some of those ships.
Does that make sense? The oil drilling business is expected to boom for the next dozen years or so.

Obama 08

What it takes to make ethanol:
It takes about 600 pounds, or about 10 bushels of either Wheat, or Corn to fill a 25 gallon tank of gas.
You would get about 3 tanks of gas per acre with Wheat and about 9 tanks of gas per acre with Corn.
What it takes in grain to fill up an SUV one time, could feed a person for up to a year.
How large a carbon foot print is crated to grow and harvest an acre of Wheat or Corn?
Starving people all over the world thank you Al Gore.
ClassicFIHD 3 years ago
No doubt the current ethanol industry is not sustainable. But we will be glad we built it and that it is American owned as the crops and processing technology changes.
The next step might be maize. We'll see how fast the cellulosic plants scale. Eventually it will be nice to move to a coproduct of food production instead of the food crops themselves.
skids7682 3 years ago
"Maize", Is that not the Spanish word for "Corn"?
This stuff looks good:
"New biodiesel crop Jatropha taking off in S.W. Florida"
Already with this "Jatropha", farmers have planted this in place of Orange Trees. Farmers will get paid more for Jatropha than oranges. Once Jatropha takes off Farmers will plant it in place of corn, wheat, and other food crops.
Coproduct of food production are not likely. You need the seed part to creat the oils product to turn into fuel.
ClassicFIHD 3 years ago
Do yourself a favor and look up cellulosic ethanol. Has nothing to do with seeds.
skids7682 3 years ago
And McCain is not against renewable energy, it's just not the issue to solve today's gas prices. That is a 15 year in the future issue. Obama has never given a date when his alternative fuel will be available. Experts say Obama's alternate fuels are at least 15 years away before they are even close to cost effective.

karasoth 3 years ago
Balanced. Hmmm, let's see.
It's balanced only in so far as none of his ideas work.
thehatbloke 3 years ago 4
Ah, the "we won't see it for 10 years argument". Dems have been using that argument for 10 years. It sure would be nice to see that increased supply now, eh?
Agree on gas tax.
Obama's 'alternative fuels' doesn't put a dent in energy costs unless you completely redo our energy infrastructure. Only the market can do that, not more government spending.
fenster98 3 years ago
It sure would be nice to see that increased supply. But the fact remains that drilling didn't commence 10 years ago and it will still take another 10 years to come on line. That's why McCain is coining the spurious phrase 'energy security' - and occasionally 'energy independence' - when he realized that no engineer or economist in the world was going to back him up on claims that the extra supply would affect prices by a cent either today, tomorrow or any time in the future.
thehatbloke 3 years ago
Lowering the expected future price of oil also lowers the current price. Would you want to hold onto a commodity that will be worth less in ten years when offshore oil starts to be pumped? Increasing domestic American consumption in the future harms the solidarity of OPEC (whose agreements are non-binding among members).
As for "no economist backing the idea", this is just a DNC talking point (true on the gas tax holiday, untrue on this matter). Why do Dems have to be just as stupid as Repubs?
domtar76 3 years ago
No economist backing the idea isn't a DNC talking point, it's a statement of fact. Unless you can show me otherwise.
And how will increased supply in ten years affect the futures price and speculating for the next nine years?
And how will the extra supply - a mere drop in the worldwide bucket - affect prices worldwide?
And how do you propose to get the American companies to sell oil at a lower-than-OPEC rate?
And how do you propose to make sure that the oil is only sold in America?
thehatbloke 3 years ago
thehatbloke,
Besides hearing it from brainless democrats, where do you get 10 years minimum to produce oil. Because 5 companies were asked that actually do the drilling say just one year for best case scenario to three years for worse case scenario.

Republicans of ALL PEOPLE talking about saving the environment when their voting record shows other wise. Give me a break. How is "off shore drilling" conserving the environment? Idiots.
rakrobn 3 years ago 2
Our technology is advanced enough that you can barely tell there has been oil drilling done. You environmental idiots would rather save a spotted toad while our economy could go down the tubes when gas gets so high that no one can afford it. Yeah, real brilliant. Chucky Schumer of NY demands that the Saudis produce more oil and then turns around and forbids us to. Who is the hypocrite?
truthforamerica 3 years ago
No you neocon idiots, need to fix the problem first. Prices are high, because of our meddling in the Middle East, esp. in Iraq. What happened to the Bush Administration's stance that the war would be paid for by the oil profits after invading Iraq??? Our economy is down the tubes because of this unending war which had NOTHING to do with 9/11. Don't destroy the environment just because you right wing neocons can't fix the problem but would rather treat the symptoms.
rakrobn 3 years ago 3
I can still afford gas. But maybe it is because as an environmentalist, I bought a hybrid long before you Republicans even started to make fun of them and say everyone who owns them loves spotted toads.
Guess I'm the winner in the end.

Republicans quadrupled the price of oil since AWOL Bush took over. It was less than $25 a barrel in Jan. 2001. Now those crooks claim they're going to lower the price? What a bunch of liars. I'm never voting Republican -- never.
allencrider 3 years ago
"Republicans quadrupled the price of oil since AWOL Bush took over." Wow. You really are stupid if you think that the republicans set the price of oil on the international market. You might want to read the news that shows China and India is increasing demand and this is driving up prices. Or you could just remain a moron and blame teh evil Boosh.
tgot 3 years ago
No, gas has almost doubled in price since the Democratic majority took over. It was just over 2.00 a gallon and Reid and Pelosi ran on a plan to reduce gas prices then. Under THEIR leadership gas has almost doubled because they restrict domestic drilling. We have more oil than all the Middle East nations combined. Get some brains.
truthforamerica 3 years ago
They have like a one or two seat majority in the Senate, not enough to override a veto or really do much at all. Nice try though.
LunarBahamut 3 years ago 3
Oh right, and when they said that they would lower prices, should we have took that to mean, we will double them? The Democrats answer like Waters, Durbin, and Hinchey are to berate the oil companies and nationalize them. That would align with their socialist agenda in every other way.
truthforamerica 3 years ago 3
tgot and truthforamerica are right.

FreshCliches 3 years ago 2
All true. But you still don't get it do you?
BO's only reason for existence is his position as "a new kind of politician" and "words matter", and of course his message of "hope" and "change".
BO's numerous flip-flops directly contradict the foundation of his message and the very reason he won the primary in the first place. Instead of being a genuinely new type of pol, it appears more and more that he's just the same old weasel-wording shapeshifting lizard type of pol.
JohnR22926 3 years ago
You can say the same about McCain. He was and is (in some circles) known as "The Maverick", not your typical politician, willing to stand on principles. Now he seems very much like your typical politician. Using gimmicks and flipping wildly back to the party line. Some maverick.
johnnyk67 3 years ago
Everything you said is correct. But, you still don't see my point.
Obama has no record to warrant anybody's vote. Except...his promise he's a "new kind of pol" that will bring fundamental change to D.C. and "fix the system".
Obama's flip-flops put that lofty rhetoric to the lie; there's nothing "special" about him at all, just another pol. And if that's true, why on earth would I vote for him? W/o his "specialnes" he's just a rookie senator with charisma.
McCain at least has a record.
