I've always thought this song portrayed a narcotic substance singing a lovesong to the addicted human. Swallowing the human being possessing him or her ... but in the end, the substance looses the fight about posessing the human being to Death, who takes the human away from the narcotic substance. Death itself is however in love with the narcotic substance and what it can do to human beings. Therefore the substance is saved by Death, when the human dies.
