  • Ethanol works well, too.

  • the easiest way to cut can is with scissors

  • @racey1321 Yup, I've moved to scissors now, but I still like to start with an exacto knife or craft blade.

  • @BCoutdoorsurvival yes.. because we still need a knife to make the first hole on it, and thx for tutorial.. :)

  • no denatured alcohol is really ethanol (that which gets you drunk) with methanol (poisonous in ml amounts) added to it

  • @MaterialSam Thanks sam @SAFriday clarified that as well. I've removed the comment to prevent any further confusion! Thanks again!

  • @BCoutdoorsurvival Yes and no... denatured alcohol is really called ethyl alcohol; moonshine is the easiest way to think about it. Essentally, is a two carbon chain with an OH group at one end. Its a pretty basic alkene based chemical. methylated spirits is ethyl alcohol that has had methene gas ran through it. The methene doesn't stop the ethyl alcohol from burning or acting as a solvent, but it renders it non-consumable, thus no longer falls under alcohol laws.

  • @SAFriday Thanks for the science side!

  • some one said this can blow up and also can i use plain rubing acohol just to test and mess around with

  • @kc88kc Hi Kc88kc, It is almost impossible for this to "blow up" or explode. If it is over filled, sometimes the pressure release causes the stove to "spit", but I've only ever seen this happen once. Once you get the hang of it, I doubt you'll have any problems. Try starting the stove the first few times in an open area, on concrete or away from anything that might burn.

I find that even pure isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol doesn't burn particularly hot. You'll find it hard to prime the stove.

  • @BCoutdoorsurvival k thank you very much

  • This is a really interesting idea for a camping stove, at the moment I'm using deposable gel stoves but I'm gonna look into fashioning one of these for myself do thanks a lot :D

  • @Hullspawn I'd love to hear how it works. There are a couple other designs too at zenstoves . net

  • useing a pair of sissors cuts the can a lot easier than a hacksaw and knife.

  • @BANGBANG73 Yah, since making this video I've converted to scissors or tin snips. It does work much more easily for thin cans. For thicker expressed aluminum i'd stick with a hack saw.

  • @BCoutdoorsurvival is it ok to use mentholated spirits for fule?

  • @cacneaunit6 It is often used for these stoves. One needs to be careful as the flames are fairly colourless. Always do this in a well ventilated area and make sure the fuel is pure. The higher % the hotter the flames!

  • 75%? i can walk to the bargain store and get 91% for almost nothing. where are you anyway?

  • @Charsept Bolivia in South America. I've since found 95% potable alcohol that burns more cleanly.

  • @BCoutdoorsurvival bolivia !? damn, youre 3500 miles away !

  • @Charsept Yup. Although I'm currently on a 6 week visit to the US and Canada. Forgot how easy it is to get a hold of things!

  • Im going to have a go . Thanks for the lesson

  • @canastasiou68 if you get the chance, try the heineken keg cans with a wider brim for priming.
