omg. You are so pretty. Not just because of your looks but your sweet personality and inspiring speech add to the cuteness of yours (i know it sounds really cheesy and I don't usually talk like this but!!) it's so true i just had to say it. Thanks for the positive vibe. I like you! :)
That was such a cool thing to say, and I totally agree with you. Not only that, but it was just what I needed to hear today :) Oh, and I think the outfit is soooo cute!
You are such a cool Lolita. I love your videos inspiring confidence in those of us who are just starting out in the fashion. Positive energy is real and I believe we share that with our beauty, in our clothes and in ourselves. Being a little eccentric is much more acceptable these days, thank goodness. :) Stay pretty!
hello! I love your video and speech. Thank you, This inspired some more to not give a hoot what others think and just do what I like best for myself. But one question, where do you buy your Lolita clothing? I went to a Lolita store here in San Francisco but they're to darn expensive!!!!
@tabitha2340 Thanks, I'm glad I could help! As for the clothes, you can buy second hand on egl community sales on live journal! Second hand is a lot cheaper to buy, especially when you're new and kind of still experimenting. You can also try shopping on taobao, which is a chinese auction site where you can get pretty decent things for great prices. You'll need a shopping service though, so I heard taobao spree is good. Haven't used them myself though!
@shelbycloud i have a question so im trying to go lolita but im trying to take slow steps into it but im a curvy girl (im not fat i just have a hourglass figure) and im use to seening lolitas only be petite or have some shape to them just not how my figure is do you think the style could still work for me even if im not petite and what would you say is the most uncomfortable thing to wear as a lolita besides a corset?
I own a few loli dresses and JSKS. I am comfortable when I wear classic and gothic lolita in public but when it comes to wearing sweet lolita it's different. I own three sweet lolita dresses but I never wear them because I'm too shy Once I wore a sweet loli JSK in public and many people kept on starring at me. Most of the people gave me nice compliments but four people in just one day said some rude comments. It's a shame that I mostly focused on the negative comments rather than the positive.
I'm about to order my first Lolita dress and I just told my mom about it. She was not too happy at all! She said that Lolitas look like clowns. ): She also said that she wouldn't go out in public with me when I wear it. I'm trying not to let it bother me. But I love the Lolita fashion too much to give up now! This video has really helped my self confidence grow! I feel like I'm ready to make my debut as a Lolita! :D
It's sad to say that the place I live makes it hard and almost dangerous to wear Lolita. It gets to the point that anything out of the ordinary to the people around here will make them actually grab at you and make horrible remarks, and you will ALWAYS be Lady Gaga XD. I think i've heard close to every insult by now, but it's rather annoying, and it's nerve racking to be ready for someone grabbing you...
I would have more confidence if I didn't have to be aware of my surroundings all the time...
i always thought i was really confident but actually i was too scared to wear these clothes even though i really want to D: so now thanks to this im going to C: lifes too short, right? >< <3 thankyouuuuuuu
@raggpants Most western lolita's do most of their shopping online! Some good sites to start are Qutieland, Bodyline, ClobbaOnline, and even eBay if you know how to pick between good and bad quality lolita. Naturally, people stare when people dress differently, so it's just one of those things you have to get used to if you want to step outside the box and dress differently than the norm. I hope you find your confidence, and hope I could help some!
@chelsietawn California is a great place is the US to be for lolita. There are actually some stores in LA and other places in Cali for lolita. More than anywhere else in the US. If you google california lolita store then you should be able to find some.
@pumkinpie27 Most Lolita stores carry in Japanese sizes which is usually smaller than American. Angelic Pretty and Baby the Stars Shine Bright sell most sizes cause they have stores outside of U.S. Other stores like Mary Madelene, Victorian Maiden, Innocent World, Juliette et Justine, and Moi-meme-moitie sell sizes only 0-6 in American sizes especially Mary Magdelene. They are expensive but I love my dresses.
You are so adorable :') I've recently gotten into Lolita, but I live in Northern Ireland and the only style I can possibly work with is Gothic which really isn't my thing, so I'm attempting casual which is meant to be hard for beginners |: I found a dress I loved but my mum said "you need normal clothes first" I was rather insulted, it was a gorgeous dress too xD This has really strengthened my want to try lolita though, I did Lolita casual last month and adored it! Great video (:
How old are you? I'm not trying to be creepy lol. I just..well I'm 24 years old and I feel like i'm too old to wear Lolita or Fairy Kei Fashion. I was wondering if you ever met another girl with this problem. Thanks! :D
Don't worry about all the nay sayer! They don't have the confidence you have. Alot of people are worried about looking "normal". You're creative and I for one appreciate it! We need more creative people in the world.
Thank you so much,im going through a hard time right now and this really cheered me up <3 it also helps be more confident when it comes to going into lolita, which ive been wanting to wear for a while but i was too worried people would stare or make fun of me for wearing it. thank you so much!! :D
I've seen people walk around covered head to toe in tattoos and piercings. At first people gave them odd looks but now it's mainstream and the norm. The moral of this story? Wear and do what you want as long as it's not injuring/killing someone. When you cry and go through pain, you're the one who goes through it. No one else. So you have the right to make yourself smile doing what you love. People shouldn't have to wait until someone else makes something popular in order to do it. Be a leader.
half right...yes people will pick up on the positive or negative vibes someone puts out about themselves..but no matter how hard you try...there will always be at least one person who is negative torwards you no matter what...so why worry. be happy in who you are and what you do...i wore lolita/goth lolita before i even knew what it was...in the city..people dont mind so much.. bottom line dress for what you like ...you are the one that pays for it and has to wear it .so enjoy!
oooohh my god! This video is so helpful! I love watching your videos Ms. Shelby. :3 I actually starting lolita since last year and this year I'm starting 8th grade :D I live in Los Angeles and I remember when I first starting wearing Lolita, this random girl came to me insulting the way I dress and saying such rude things >.< And ever since that I didnt really have the confident to wear lolita, but this video really helped. Thanky you! :D
You are a fantastic lolita figure. For like 14th birthday in 20 days, I am going to become a sweet lolita using my birthday money. I think it looks very fun and an exciting way to show that I am a playful person. I wish to be like you and be able to talk with strong confidence while wearing cute lolita clothing.
Also, that dress, when I saw it in your mirror I squealed, it is so adorable.
I wear Visual kei a lot and sometimes lolita. People laugh at me and stare at me. I just laugh right back. I feel great and that gives my confidence and then I just don't care what anyone else thinks. I actually hope people laugh at me cause then I am being noticed. You look different, you look awesome, be proud of it!! :D -^_^-
You look so cute in that outfit, I don't know how anyone could be negative about it. Fashion is fashion and if you feel good wearing it, you'll look good wearing it. If I was young enough to date you, I would be proud to have you dressed like that on a night out together. It's a pity the style wasn't more popular.
It's really nice to see women who like to wear very feminine styles, I wish there were more like that. Even if it wasn't Lolita, more feminine is great.
Please check out my blog O: I'm a 16 year old aspiring sweet lolita--I wear casual pretty much all of the time but I intend to be a full-time by next year :D abibumbleB . blogspot .com
ASDF THANK YOU FOR THIS. This was one of my biggest concerns, because I'm gradually getting more and more into lolita. And I'm uber jealous of your room ;-;
I love this video, I'm just getting into lolita and this video is helping me be less nervous about it! I'm starting out small because I don't have too much money but I think you are very inspiring! <3<3<3
In finland, at helsinki and other big city's hereyou can dress up like that, and maybe someone want's to take a picture, but in smaller places here, if you look so cute and such people yell at youu and look at you like you were like some kind of an alien or something...lol.. But great video, I love your room and clothes
I love your clothes shelby. I really wish I could dress Lolita, but my Mom thinks that it's for little children. She also thinks we will not afford it. I know brand can cost around 300-400 dollars, even 500 sometimes, but anyways, do you have any ideas for me to tell her? I would be super grateful if you replied :) and I'm suscribing to you. Yo
Self confidence, it seems to be a paradox within me. This year in my yearbook my fried wrote that she loved my self confidence. Well, i just spent about 3 weekends of tedious labor making a lolita dress. My first one. I love it very much and plan to make more, but i might never wear them in public. I'm classic lolita, and wished people still dressed like that. Or at least in this time period, be accepting of people who want to dress differently. I'm so afraid of what people will think of me :(
You remind me so much of my best friend; I just can't help but to love you. You are such a sweet girl and your confidence is just inspiring. I don't wear Lolita (yet!) but I can totally relate to the whole people staring at you. In spring I buzzed my hair into a purple mohawk. Some people stare (mostly because I live in the middle of nowhere) but when I answer them with kindness and friendliness I almost always get a positive reaction.
What you say is so true, I wish you love and luck.
u have 100% rite I'm lolita girl and I think about this question like u if u have big positiv energi everythink be ok I wear lolita clothes and I don't care what a people think about me
@MusicBabeStar I live in one of the smaller cities in Canada, and NO ONE, knows what lolita is!! I even went to Montreal and Toronto (well known for large numbers of lolis), I got a lot of weird stairs, as well as a lot of people telling me I looked cute where ever I went. Very very few people know what Lolita is, regardless of where you are.
@HyperAndHappy AT LEAST YOU LIVE IN CANADA!!! I hate living in Brazil, I hate Brazil, I hate the fact tht I was born in Brazil! I moved to Toronto when I was only 4 and came back 2 Brazil like 2 months b4 I completed 6 years. I loved Canada, and I still love. And I also love Japan ALOT! I am learning japanese with an japanese lessons I've downloaded on the internet (don't remember were, actually, was my dad who downloaded it lol) Anyway, express yourself, go out there struting with style! ♥
@MusicBabeStar BYKI is a easy way to get started on Japanese and beginner Kanji o: When you go to Japan, make sure you go to all 3 of the Closet Child's, I hear they're great! :D Good luck
@TheIloveflapjack If you've ever worn Lolita in public you'll noticed that many Westerners think that Lolita is some type of party/play costume, or a weird fetish (more once you tell them its called Lolita ><). While most Japanese people are more accustom to street fashion, since it originated in their own country.
@HyperAndHappy Yes, I have actually. Most Japanese people aren't accustomed to lolita because it is a subculture and a very non-mainstream fashion that isn't commonplace and treat it like Americans treat punk or goth, so yeah they will still laugh and gawk at lolitas. And many people in America will simply be curious about your clothing because they have never seen it before and sometimes ask if they can take pictures (ESPECIALLY TOURISTS) because it's so new to them.
@TheIloveflapjack I said more accustom, not used to. I say this because alternative fashion is common among Japanese students, thus if you wear punk in Japan people won't even turn to look at you. In America, goth and punk are very common and practically main-stream.The only tourist, here in Canada, that took my picture were a group Japanese tourist who were surprised that Lolita was popular here, oh - the irony. Thats my two cents. Please note, I'm not here to argue or to feed the trolls.
@HyperAndHappy No, I think I understand what you mean! I was just trying to clarify that because lots of girls think that Japan is perfectly accepting of lolita and never have problems with it and that Americans are really awful about it and generalizations based on people's nationalities tend to bother me. But I think i see where you're coming from :)
Thank you so much for making this! I have just recently discovered this style. It was so hard at first finding websites and videos about it, so thanks again for making this, I feel a lot more confident about why I like/wear it now ^_^
@LittleMissSweetieKat I'm sorry if you're being harassed, probably the best thing to do is ignore the harassers. They'll stop bothering you if they don't get a reaction from you. Unfortunately when you post something online in a public place, there will always be people who disagree with you, especially on such a sensitive topic. And people tend to get angry when they've been offended.Just keep this in mind the next time you are voicing your opinions! :) In some time, everything will blow over!
@LittleMissSweetieKat It''s okay if that's against your religion, you have every right to believe whatever you choose. But please understand that not everyone here is Christian, not everyone agrees with you. Having your own beliefs is one thing, but to call others names like "creeepy" and "gross" and condemn them for having different beliefs isn't right. You wouldn't like someone to say nasty things like that about you, right? Please, let's all just respect each other and agreee to disagree! :)
Where does "God" say that that's wrong? It's just an outfit. What is so wrong about a guy wearing something that has one leg hole instead of two? That's the only difference. Doesn't sound too wrong to me.
@LittleMissSweetieKat It's Christians like you, who make up stupid shit that apparently God finds wrong when in fact it's just the people around you misreading the badly-translated text from the Bible and spouting bullshit opinions, that makes me despise the entire church. Congrats.
Take your hate mongering to your church so you can all talk about shit you hate together then justify it by saying God said it too. There's a good chance the people in your congregation think you're an idiot, too.
thank you! you are awesome! I can't afford the lolita style, lol.Too expensive. But if I could do it financially,I would. You're a great motivator girl ^//^
Hey, thank you very much. I kinda needed this video. I'm the girl who wears sweaters and yoga pants, and Im getting tired of it. I want to start trying to wear lolita this summer. I want to make people smile and put color and beauty (and a little bit of lace!) into my smallish town. I'm justa little worried about how my friends and parents would take it, as Ive never been the one to care much about fashion, but I found myself caring alot about lolita. Thanks for the vibes and advice!
i wear lolita and my friends love it though they say they wouldn't wear it.. but my parents have i huge issue with me dressing that way.they are always telling me how stupid i look and not at all my ages and it gets depressing and that why i feel like i cant wear it... :( and when with my dad or mom if im in a lolita neither of them can even look my way in public...
I want your outfit. And your bedroom. And maybe the hamster? This is so random but where is that bookcase from? It's exactly the style I'm looking for. My last one broke from the weight of my books. Haha.
You know, my mom found it as a gift for me a long time ago! One of her hobbies is collecting antiques and going to antique auctions, and she came across it there. Keep an eye out at second hand places, or estate sales, you can find some beautiful old used furniture!
I was wondering, your parents are fine with you dressing/wearing lolita, am I correct? I'm confident to start wearing and becoming a lolita, but my parents are very bipolar saying they like it and they are scared of it at the same time....Funny thing is that they think I'll become like the ORPHAN which that will not happen...haha
And totally right what you are saying =) *thumbs up*
Sometimes I feel uncomfortable myself but normally I'm very selfconfident. But I hate people staring at me like I was an Alien or something else. Curious people are okay but when I hear someone laughing at me that really makes me angry >o<
I love this video. I recently came out to my friend that I want to cross dress and get into lolita, and she is going to help me :) You are so beautiful!
im into kuro lolita and decora yep im planning to use a charater from hetalia and mix decora into teh look also i like your dress i have a black gothic dress that my mother gave me and im wondering what's better kuro lolita or sweet lolita.
I'm going with my friend to China Town to see what stuff they have there, maybe not clothes but they have nice accessories ! I love the Lolita style but I'm more into Hime Gyaru ^^
Hi! I would really like to get to know you! I know that sounded weird, but I wanna get into the Lolita world. I was looking for a style that was doll like and i came upon Lolita! PLease help me!
looks complicated to dress like that everyday >< ill stick to a tshirt and jeans

Lovely outfit~! Which blouse do you waer on the the JSK?
Gamegirlnr1 7 months ago
You look so cute in that outfit, I don't know how anyone could be negative about it. Fashion is fashion and if you feel good wearing it, you'll look good wearing it. If I was young enough to date you, I would be proud to have you dressed like that on a night out together. It's a pity the style wasn't more popular.
It's really nice to see women who like to wear very feminine styles, I wish there were more like that. Even if it wasn't Lolita, more feminine is great.

@HyperAndHappy At least you don't live in Brazil, in a KINDA small town were people almost dont know wtf is lolita...
MusicBabeStar 5 months ago
@MusicBabeStar I live in one of the smaller cities in Canada, and NO ONE, knows what lolita is!! I even went to Montreal and Toronto (well known for large numbers of lolis), I got a lot of weird stairs, as well as a lot of people telling me I looked cute where ever I went. Very very few people know what Lolita is, regardless of where you are.
HyperAndHappy 5 months ago
@HyperAndHappy AT LEAST YOU LIVE IN CANADA!!! I hate living in Brazil, I hate Brazil, I hate the fact tht I was born in Brazil! I moved to Toronto when I was only 4 and came back 2 Brazil like 2 months b4 I completed 6 years. I loved Canada, and I still love. And I also love Japan ALOT! I am learning japanese with an japanese lessons I've downloaded on the internet (don't remember were, actually, was my dad who downloaded it lol) Anyway, express yourself, go out there struting with style! ♥

@HyperAndHappy Why must you make generalizations about all American and Japanese people based on their nationality? :P
TheIloveflapjack 5 months ago
@TheIloveflapjack If you've ever worn Lolita in public you'll noticed that many Westerners think that Lolita is some type of party/play costume, or a weird fetish (more once you tell them its called Lolita ><). While most Japanese people are more accustom to street fashion, since it originated in their own country.
HyperAndHappy 5 months ago
@HyperAndHappy Yes, I have actually. Most Japanese people aren't accustomed to lolita because it is a subculture and a very non-mainstream fashion that isn't commonplace and treat it like Americans treat punk or goth, so yeah they will still laugh and gawk at lolitas. And many people in America will simply be curious about your clothing because they have never seen it before and sometimes ask if they can take pictures (ESPECIALLY TOURISTS) because it's so new to them.
TheIloveflapjack 5 months ago
@TheIloveflapjack I said more accustom, not used to. I say this because alternative fashion is common among Japanese students, thus if you wear punk in Japan people won't even turn to look at you. In America, goth and punk are very common and practically main-stream.The only tourist, here in Canada, that took my picture were a group Japanese tourist who were surprised that Lolita was popular here, oh - the irony. Thats my two cents. Please note, I'm not here to argue or to feed the trolls.
HyperAndHappy 5 months ago
@HyperAndHappy No, I think I understand what you mean! I was just trying to clarify that because lots of girls think that Japan is perfectly accepting of lolita and never have problems with it and that Americans are really awful about it and generalizations based on people's nationalities tend to bother me. But I think i see where you're coming from :)

Hmm. So you don't wear pants, then? And you think any girl who wears pants is also wrong? Cause, you know, they were intended for men.
sourjin 9 months ago
@LittleMissSweetieKat I'm sorry if you're being harassed, probably the best thing to do is ignore the harassers. They'll stop bothering you if they don't get a reaction from you. Unfortunately when you post something online in a public place, there will always be people who disagree with you, especially on such a sensitive topic. And people tend to get angry when they've been offended.Just keep this in mind the next time you are voicing your opinions! :) In some time, everything will blow over!
shelbycloud 9 months ago
@LittleMissSweetieKat It''s okay if that's against your religion, you have every right to believe whatever you choose. But please understand that not everyone here is Christian, not everyone agrees with you. Having your own beliefs is one thing, but to call others names like "creeepy" and "gross" and condemn them for having different beliefs isn't right. You wouldn't like someone to say nasty things like that about you, right? Please, let's all just respect each other and agreee to disagree! :)

damn you are so adorable i really love it!! <333

@LittleMissSweetieKat
Where does "God" say that that's wrong? It's just an outfit. What is so wrong about a guy wearing something that has one leg hole instead of two? That's the only difference. Doesn't sound too wrong to me.
sourjin 9 months ago
@LittleMissSweetieKat It's Christians like you, who make up stupid shit that apparently God finds wrong when in fact it's just the people around you misreading the badly-translated text from the Bible and spouting bullshit opinions, that makes me despise the entire church. Congrats.
Take your hate mongering to your church so you can all talk about shit you hate together then justify it by saying God said it too. There's a good chance the people in your congregation think you're an idiot, too.
