There is a big difference between a spanking and a beating, and people need to realize that. A spanking is just supposed to leave a red stinging bottom, that's it. That's not abuse. Notice how back in the old days kids were much more respectful than they are now.

EXACTLY...you were one who was obviously stubborn, had issues because your dad dies when you were 16, and based on your language here, even probably foul mouthed. Your mom didn't know how to deal with a hurting child ( stubbornness isn't the issue here) , HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that spanking doesn't work or is abuse for the NORMAL child...it just means you were the child most of us are glad we didn't have...no offense. If you let your kid get away with everything and don't do anything about it, than yes that is not discipling. there are ways to get your child to listen other than hitting them. But yes it takes time and patiance and consistancy! Which is what most parents don't have today. We won't even spank our son for running towards a road or touching a hot stove but we will teach him not to in our own way. And I did inform my own mother she is NOT to hit my son NO MATTER what he does.
And he did punish me, he just used non-physical punishmentsand they worked! My mom taught me basically that once I was big enough to defend myself, if someone hit me, yes damn right I had a right to defend myself.
I now have a 1 year old son, and my husband and I both refuse to spank him at all. We use other forms of disciplne. I've heard people say that if you don't spank your kid than you're not disciplining them. That's wrong.
I would turn around and do something even worse to spite her even as a young kid. I rebelled against my mom when my dad died and I even smart mouther her when I was 16 years old. She slapped me, and I slapped her back. I told her to never hit me again or I would hit back. And had every right to. spanking is acceptable. You aren't beating them unconcous. smack them when they're bad. I hit my neices and nephew when they act out. Actually, no grounding me never hurt me or my social life. It just bored me. And it taught me that I didn't want to be grounded so I would do what my dad would like. And spanking is over sooner than a grounding is, how does that teach anything? A quick pain an they can do what they were again basically. In adult life, we don't get hit by our bosses if we don't follow rules, we get fired! No one is allowed to hit us, it should be the same for children.

It can't be easy to be in such a fishbowl having the paps camped outside their home watching EVERY move that they make. The nasty comments photogs yell at people when trying to get photos and to see their reactions and hoping they will incite someone to say something is just ridiculous. I have never watched Jon and Kate plus 8 so I really can't comment on that. On hitting your kid. Well I clearly remember my father hitting me once. To which he felt guilty for right after doing. He was abused as a child and never wanted to do that to his own. I personally don't see a problem with spanking them as long as not over done and with reason. One smack to the butt isn't abuse, but numerous ones are crossing that line. To me anyway.
First, I'd like to say that I am about to turn 16 years old this month, and I have an older sister that is about to turn 19, and a brother about to turn 22 (who's never gotten drunk, weirdo j/k). Ever since I was a child, I'd hear people complimenting my mom and dad on their well-behaved kids and how smart her kids were for our age, and we have never been spanked. We rarely did things "bad kids" do, and we learned to love & respect ourselves early on.
And this isn't telling anyone to not spank their kids, because with some kids, it's necessary. I'm just saying that there is a way to teach other kids to respect themselves and others enough to be well-behaved. I don't know how my parents did it, but it is possible.

If you let your kid get away with everything and don't do anything about it, than yes that is not discipling. there are ways to get your child to listen other than hitting them. But yes it takes time and patiance and consistancy! Which is what most parents don't have today. We won't even spank our son for running towards a road or touching a hot stove but we will teach him not to in our own way. And I did inform my own mother she is NOT to hit my son NO MATTER what he does.

And he did punish me, he just used non-physical punishmentsand they worked! My mom taught me basically that once I was big enough to defend myself, if someone hit me, yes damn right I had a right to defend myself.
I now have a 1 year old son, and my husband and I both refuse to spank him at all. We use other forms of disciplne. I've heard people say that if you don't spank your kid than you're not disciplining them. That's wrong.

I would turn around and do something even worse to spite her even as a young kid. I rebelled against my mom when my dad died and I even smart mouther her when I was 16 years old. She slapped me, and I slapped her back. I told her to never hit me again or I would hit back. And had every right to. No me smart mouthing her was wrong, I admit, but there were other ways she could have handled it. I hated disappointing my father.

But not all kids are the same. Some kids spanking may get through to once or twice. But what about the really strong willed ones? Ones who turn around and do something more that their parents dont like? If the answer is spank more or harder or longer,than that turns into abuse and that is ILLEGAL!

Well, ok I was spanked by one parent and the other no. I have a friend who was never spanked and is a really good person, and has never as much as had a speeding ticket in her life. But yeah, she was a pretty mischeivous kid, I know cause we grew up together. I think if you don't discipline your child at all, just say "don't do that it's not good." then yeah you may have problems later in the kids life. And they may get into a lot of trouble when thy are grown.

spanking is acceptable. You aren't beating them unconcous. smack them when they're bad. I hit my neices and nephew when they act out. Actually, no grounding me never hurt me or my social life. It just bored me. And it taught me that I didn't want to be grounded so I would do what my dad would like. And spanking is over sooner than a grounding is, how does that teach anything? A quick pain an they can do what they were again basically. In adult life, we don't get hit by our bosses if we don't follow rules, we get fired! No one is allowed to hit us, it should be the same for children.

And, you're right about the kids thing; I've only ever smacked my daughter once (she bit me) but, if she needed it, I would do it again. My mom pulled some Madea on me when I was 5 and said the police wouldn't let her do it...she started calling them herself explaining she was going to spank me in front of them and explain to them why THEN they would take me away and stick me with strangers who would do God only knows what to me and wouldn't love me the way she did. Took my butt-whoopin, went to bed mad, and thanked God the next day I have a mom like her! I was only spanked a couple times as a kid though. I was a good girl.

Mannn, when I'm a parent, offcourse I'm gonna whopp my kids if they get out of line, but in a loving parent-kind-of-wayyy..LOL some parents get carried away and relieve their stress on their kids. That's wrong, when you're mad at your kids, take some time and cool off, then explain to the kid why you're upset with them, and punish them accordingly. You dont always have to whopp them, but according to the severity of the situation,as a parent you should be able to decide an appropriate punishment

there's a difference in spanking to get a point across, and spanking because you're aggitated or annoyed. often one or two taps will be more than enough to let a child know what they did was wrong, but it should never leave a mark. people get annoyed and go overboard. kate is a bitch, but she is left alone with 8 kids to take care of. kids shouldn't fear their parents, just respect them.

It can't be easy to be in such a fishbowl having the paps camped outside their home watching EVERY move that they make. The nasty comments photogs yell at people when trying to get photos and to see their reactions and hoping they will incite someone to say something is just ridiculous. I have never watched Jon and Kate plus 8 so I really can't comment on that. On hitting your kid. Well I clearly remember my father hitting me once. To which he felt guilty for right after doing. He was abused as a child and never wanted to do that to his own. I personally don't see a problem with spanking them as long as not over done and with reason. One smack to the butt isn't abuse, but numerous ones are crossing that line. To me anyway.

First, I'd like to say that I am about to turn 16 years old this month, and I have an older sister that is about to turn 19, and a brother about to turn 22 (who's never gotten drunk, weirdo j/k). Ever since I was a child, I'd hear people complimenting my mom and dad on their well-behaved kids and how smart her kids were for our age, and we have never been spanked. We rarely did things "bad kids" do, and we learned to love & respect ourselves early on.

what your parents did is they raised you. some parents don't believe in spanking & think that is the key to a healthy kid & do nothing about raising their kid that's why there's so many disrespectful misbehaving kids & then there are parents who think all they have to do is spank a kid & do nothing more which is also why we have so many disrespectful misbehaving kids. teaching morals setting boundaries consistency & knowing what the kid is doing & with whom, spanking is a tool not the only thing
