@theden There are over 100 creation stories and religions around the world. Why should i believe in christianity? Jesus was nothing but a REGUALR MAN who may not have even existed, and the bible was written by normal people long after he was dead. If anything I agree with buddhism which teaches to find true enlightenment without the millions of restraints of christianity. The only rule is to live in moderation. Organized religion is nothing but a way to seperate and take advantage of people.

I think that the bishop held his own in this debate. I don't agree with everything he said but it doesn't take a genius to see that he was clearly outnumbered.
PS - and I say all this, but of course I have tons of "Christian" friends I love and respect, even intellectually, even spiritually. I just have to assume there's a disconnect in their minds somewhere, insofar as they can be rational and sensible about everything in the world but the claims of religion. Usually they're just "nominal" Xians anyway, don't really believe it but don't ever think about it either.
Plus it's hard not to get pissed listening to this fucking idiot on here again.
So you are going to assume your so-called "Christian" friends are completely logical when they agree with you, and then assume their mentally flawed where they do not. THEN gonna tell me they don't really believe it (hint: then they're not Christians, they're just bored on Sunday Mornings and want free wafers and wine...)
Do you see yet how a real Christian may find you disturbingly laughable? You've presented assumptions and bigotry ahead of logic, claiming Christians are assumptive bigots.
And Xianity DESERVES to be singled out. It's a stupid, sick, wicked, backwards religion that glorifies suffering & deifies corpses, and trades all real values for the bribe to God called "accepting Jesus." It's the most anti-human mind-disease ever incubated by any human mind. And I'm talking basic concepts here - things most Xians would agree on. Anybody who can read "Paul" with any comprehension, and NOT come away disgusted at his hideous moral & spiritual deformities, is merely kin to him.
So now you'd rather make stuff up and use incorrect logic instead of actually coming clean as to what your personal beef with Christianity is? Did some Christian somewhere mentally eff you up? Go to some up tight catholic school or something? What? What is it? Deifying corpses? Really? Glorifies SUFFERING? I don't think I have that translation.
You clearly have a personal story that has led you to such acrimony. I'm curious as to what it is.
I really have no personal beef with Xianity...lol. I was a serious Catholic 8 year old but I outgrew it, and my parents never forced it on me. They just accepted it when I stopped going to church, so it never became a big issue. Even the typical Xian attitude towards homos has never directly impacted me as a homo, mostly since I just don't care what they think. I rail against it because I have to, because they make it necessary; but it really is as impersonal as if I was straight.
This whole thing is an example of man corrupting God's word. Ernie Hudson says in his church, they taught you'd go to hell if you didn't go to THAT CHURCH. Then that simply isn't a church. Their pastor - like many - doesn't have the requisite training to lead. (Hint: your pastor should have PhD and speak no less than three REAL languages. Tongues is not one of them) in order to fully lead by way of Biblical Teachings and not random "Church Culture".
you can actually watch the people around religious people get angry because they can't through to these fucking people with this neurological disorder.
No they aren't. It's just much easier to assume as much because it makes it less likely that anyone against a religion argue "look at these nutjobs!" Essentially, everyone who's ever been President of the United States has been a proclaimed Christian. Even the ones liberal athiests swear by. Yes, including Gore.
"We say homosexuality is wrong and you call us intolerant, but you insult our religion and isn't THAT intolerant?" - FAIL. You might as well say that the entire world has been "intolerant" of Nazism in the wake of WWII. Actually we just figured out that an ideology that impugns entire groups of people for totally irrational "reasons" is not such a good thing. It's perfectly rational to be intolerant of intolerance itself.
General statement, but when religion teaches things that are demonstrably not true, and requires you to believe them anyway, and you do, and you wind up resenting "secularism" because it doesn't jibe with the fantasy world you've entered - that's called being an idiot & proud of it.
That's not ALL religion, but it's MOST religion in America. It's simply childish to believe that (e.g.) "Jesus" died & rose bodily from the grave. It's just a pointless lie you accept & then call that "religion."
1. You think Christianity is an AMERICAN thing? 2. You want to talk about logic and reason and childishness? Go look up "The Case for Christianity" who makes an excellent argument for skeptics, as he once was such a skeptic, and is a trained attorney (like me).
3. Jesus (that's not his name, by the way, but we'll move on for the remedial folks) never showed up to establish any Religion.
4. Secularism? Me? You sure. You know anything about me? Hint: I MAKE SECULAR MUSIC. Tons of it.
I'll fold. I don't really know anything about you. I was just reacting to your remarks about homos & Xianity.
I've made a lifelong intensive study of every religious tradition I can. I was raised Catholic & I'm well acquainted with Xian apologetics of all kinds. But I can also compare that with all the other religions I've studied, & see the points of identity & the topical variations. With that perspective there's no way I can take Xianity at face value.
As for "Jesus," nobody knows anything for sure. We can only responsibly guess that there was probably a real man who partially inspired the gospel stories, whose sayings may have been taken down while he was alive, who was evidently of a revolutionary bent, on the Jewish model of the Messiah as one who would free them from the Roman yoke (as opposed to the later Christian interpretation), and who therefore pissed off the wrong people & got himself executed. The rest is religion.
You just seem to be trying entirely too hard to hate Christianity. (read: I'm SO not Catholic, and I was willing to bet you were raised one.) Why is it that so many athiests used to be Catholic? I don't get the connection.
I hate some of the idiots who speak for Xianity like this Earl Jackson asshole; but as for the religion itself, my own research has simply invalidated it.
Catholicism (as Protestants note) has retained the most points of contact with the "pagan" element, which was one of the original elements of Xianity - the "Dying God" who rises again, connected with the Sun & the Seasons (hence Easter at the Equinox & Christmas at the Solstice). I can easily see Catholics going pagan with a few adjustments!
Not necessarily. Many homosexuals do find it to have been a choice. There is a large population of lesbians and gays who have said they tried being straight, they didn't like it. So they went to the "other side". If I tried soccer and didn't like it, so I chose football, does that mean I was genetically predisposed to play fb? If so, then what ever IS a choice?
We conveniently argue gay isn't a choice ignoring all those that do in fact make the conscious decision.
Didn't like it means they where gay! Alot of those supposed turned homosexuals where filled with guilt of being who they are. "The conscious decision to be gay " Are you fucking serious!?
There are a lot of homosexuals filled with guilt of being who they are who aren't getting it from religion. Second of all, while there are some people who didn't chose to be gay, there are still many others who in fact did and have said so in the public. Google "Cheryl Swoops" the former WNBA all star and 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist. I don't have to be serious, THEY said it. Sorry if your argument fails because of facts. I couldn't care less either way.
Sure you don't care less, you're religion seems to though. You can't chose an orientation any more than you can choice a race. Cheryl SwoopEs said "You can't control who you fall in love with." where's the choice in that statement? Also, lots of gays have tried to be "normal" while marrying the opposite sex.
""I can't help who I fall in love with. No one can.I didn't always know I was gay. I honestly didn't. Do I think I was born this way? No. And that's probably confusing to some, because I know a lot of people believe that you areDiscovering I'm gay just sort of happened much later in lifeI'm content with who I am and who I'm with. Whether people think that's right, whether they think it's wrong, I don't care."
Maybe you get it from your "religion." I'm sure you do! Thanks for demonstrating that for us.
You know, they used to say black people were under the "Curse of Ham," and were therefore fit to be kept as slaves. They found their authority for this in specific Biblical texts. They were quite convinced of it.
You might think twice before pulling that same shit on other groups of people.
What exactly are you responding to because I can't tell from the thread. And for the record, there is nothing in the Bible that ever said Black people were the cursed son of Ham. In fact, the bible says we ALL are the descendants of Ham. Again, this is the result of people having no clue whatsoever about the Bible.
Why do you think Slaveowners insisted we not know how to read? We'd figure that out.
Most christians are closed minded to other ideas and philosophies because they have the illusion that they have to be correct because the BIBLE said so. Why cant some people just stop being so ARROGANT? I say believe whatever you want to believe but STOP TRYING TO CONVERT PEOPLE THROUGH FEAR AND MIND CONTROL!!!! That bishop is an example of a "I think I know it all because I believe in a god that may not exist"
Most people aren't trying to convert others through "fear and mind control". That's not how it's supposed to be done. People need to be willing to hear the answers to the questions that they have. It is then up to THEM to make decisions based on those answers. Christians don't then follow you around and hit you with Bibles. It's simply a matter of "Do You. I'mma do Me". But don't ask a Christian questions if you don't want them to give you answers you may not be ready to live with yet.
Right, because clearly that means he's going to go hijack planes? Taliban? Okay.
I wonder why people get so angry by Christianity. Anybody up in arms about Judaism? Hinduism? Everyone believes they have the answer, but something in people's souls really gets riled up in the presence of any discussion about Jesus. Why does one's virulence make that distinction?
Are you that blind. People aren't pissed at Christianity for no reason, are certainly not because they wanna be sinful rebels. You see videos of little children being injected with guilt and fear in religious camps and you see religious people taking rights from others. You also see idiots like the WBC picketting funeral. America's most fallowed religion is Christianity, so ofcourse we aren't attacking other religions as much.
Religious people taking rights away from others? Who? Right winged nutjobs? Oh, I know: devout "Christians" like Palin and Bush? What I'm telling you is that those people aren't "Christians". They can recite the bible all day and have no idea what it means. Again, you like Maher are holding up complete and utter morons and trying to pass them off like Christians. That's EXACTLY like looking at Bin Laden and going "All muslims are crazy terrorists!"
It's funny how when you don't agree with their actions, you don't call them Christians but I'm sure if you had any common sense, you'd not agree with the bible. No all muslims are as irrational and weak minded as any theist.
I disagree with anyone who claims to be Christian but runs counter to the Bible. Don't try to act like you know me. I'm TELLING you who I am.
"It's funny how when you..." can't lump me in a group of backwards minded idiots and point at us all as one horrible band.
Again, sorry that you refuse to get it. You don't have to believe what I believe, but why be such a hater? I'm not Jewish, but I don't have to hate on them.
And for the record, I'm looking at your profile, and you single out Christians. You do know that basically EVERY religion has something against homosexualiity, right? I mean, Islam, Israel and Christianity are pretty much in direct alignment with those things. I ask again: why are you singling out Christians? Because Jews have religious camps like a MUG! 10x more than we do. Same with Islam. Christianity is about as lib as it gets...
Any religion that criminalizes sexuality in general, and homosexuality in particular - as many of them do, you're right about that - does so out of a fundamental ignorance of nature, perpetuated through generations of sectarian training.
I don't HAVE to make sweeping generalizations about Xians or Jews or Muslims. Their respective religions do it for me. Your religion has obviously convinced you that you know more about homosexuals than they know about themselves. THAT is the problem.
"Your religion has OBVIOUSLY convinced you that you know more about homosexuals than they know about themselves. THAT is the problem"
Really? Because it seems clearer to me that the PROBLEM is that you've made this assumption about me without knowing a thing about me. In your mind, I'm apparently just every other religious heretic you've met or imagined. Get off that.
I know in these comments you've repeatedly defended Xianity & other religions for reviling homosexuality. That's all I need to know here. I brought up the Curse of Ham analogy because a lot of people don't give a damn about homos, and would never see the crime in treating them this way; but when you show that the same scam happened to black people, MAYBE they can muster some actual empathy.
Xians themselves were once the day's whipping-boys; now they're just perpetuating the cycle of abuse.
What exactly do you think Christians did TO gays that was so bad? You said something about criminalizing sexual behavior? Really? Criminalizing? You are in a sense demonizing a "religion" that you are proving to know excruciatingly little about.
What religion has the most money? What religion dominates my country and most of others? That's why. Sorry, I'll replace Christianity with All Religion, thanks.
So your issue isn't really with Christianity or Religion, but it is instead with preconceived notions about christianity while it remains such a large international power.
It's with any irrational belief that lacks empirical evidence and still makes money and brain washes adults and children. Any time someone puts responsiblity on a God, they're asking for trouble and anyone who doesn't, should realize their belief in a God is irrelevant.
So what you're telling me is you don't know what "brainwashing" means? Because there's a huge difference between being "brainwashed" and "faith". I'd suggest you look it up.
Guys, seriously: Lies and half truths aren't going to work here. Yes, there are some "churches" that try to brainwash. Usually, they're on TV. I go by what's in the Bible, not what a pimp tells a bunch of idiots. If you can't tell the difference, then fall back. You don't know what you're talking about.
Obviously you don't know what evidence is nor do YOU understand brainwashing. Faith is the absence of understaning. Faith in what? If you know why have faith, if you don't keep it in your head.
If you guy buy what's in the bible, your moraly inferior in needing a book to live by when others are moral without the bible. You just discredited the moral people of other faiths and no faiths. I do know what I'm talking about, you just can't admit that you don't.
@buddhasknowbest I agree BUT you might be unaware of the fact that applause on tv programs is ALWAYS fake. There's a guy in the audience that gets paid to start applauses at certain times.
It's so frustrating when a preacher/bishop says all this bullshit and then never answers good questions like the fact of other churches ideas and other beliefs. It always falls under the vague rule and idea of god's controll.
No, it doesn't fall under the vague rule of God's control. It falls under the vague rule of no one paying attention in any world history class ever. I'll say it like Ceelo Green: "In the end, we'll see." Agree to disagree and walk on.
Notsomuch. He's apparently Protestant. Protestants really couldn't care less about the Vatican and the Pope. Most of us share the same opinion of the guy as Mohr...
Exactly. Michael Moore had it pegged right: Christ was a leftist. There is no other way to describe Him other than "For the people, Of the people, By the people." He didn't come down from heaven, he was born "of and by and for" the people. *shrug* I myself am a DEVOUT Christian. I'm also very much a devout Democrat!
So what of "religious" people who actually have extremely high IQ's, are multilingual and actually possess (real) PhD's from places like Harvard or Yale? They not "intelligent" either? Because no one's looking at them. Athiests like Maher call up idiots like this Bishop and go "ya see? Christianity is stupid".
No, THAT guy is stupid. It's a common slight of hand that he ALWAYS DOES. Something early on pissed him off about church, so now he's on a "crusade" (pun intended).
If God doesn't exist, then how could we have The Bible? Think about that, bishop.

Could you imagine being a sales person when religions were teaching people the world was FLAT
and then scientific evidence that the world was actually round prove to be true.
That meant he had to old on to the lie and say that it was a test of faith until science made it undeniable. He then had to switch professions or die.
As you may know, I don't think he is alive anymore.... draw your own conclusions.

ScinLaeca358 2 years ago
You just seem to be trying entirely too hard to hate Christianity. (read: I'm SO not Catholic, and I was willing to bet you were raised one.) Why is it that so many athiests used to be Catholic? I don't get the connection.
BlackSoultan 2 years ago
I hate some of the idiots who speak for Xianity like this Earl Jackson asshole; but as for the religion itself, my own research has simply invalidated it.
Catholicism (as Protestants note) has retained the most points of contact with the "pagan" element, which was one of the original elements of Xianity - the "Dying God" who rises again, connected with the Sun & the Seasons (hence Easter at the Equinox & Christmas at the Solstice). I can easily see Catholics going pagan with a few adjustments!

homosexuality is not a choice, religion is. That why its ok to insult it.
nbarrett100 2 years ago 12
Not necessarily. Many homosexuals do find it to have been a choice. There is a large population of lesbians and gays who have said they tried being straight, they didn't like it. So they went to the "other side". If I tried soccer and didn't like it, so I chose football, does that mean I was genetically predisposed to play fb? If so, then what ever IS a choice?
We conveniently argue gay isn't a choice ignoring all those that do in fact make the conscious decision.
BlackSoultan 2 years ago
Didn't like it means they where gay! Alot of those supposed turned homosexuals where filled with guilt of being who they are. "The conscious decision to be gay " Are you fucking serious!?
clipsryan 2 years ago
There are a lot of homosexuals filled with guilt of being who they are who aren't getting it from religion. Second of all, while there are some people who didn't chose to be gay, there are still many others who in fact did and have said so in the public. Google "Cheryl Swoops" the former WNBA all star and 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist. I don't have to be serious, THEY said it. Sorry if your argument fails because of facts. I couldn't care less either way.
BlackSoultan 2 years ago
Sure you don't care less, you're religion seems to though. You can't chose an orientation any more than you can choice a race. Cheryl SwoopEs said "You can't control who you fall in love with." where's the choice in that statement? Also, lots of gays have tried to be "normal" while marrying the opposite sex.
clipsryan 2 years ago
Nice try. Full quote:
""I can't help who I fall in love with. No one can.I didn't always know I was gay. I honestly didn't. Do I think I was born this way? No. And that's probably confusing to some, because I know a lot of people believe that you areDiscovering I'm gay just sort of happened much later in lifeI'm content with who I am and who I'm with. Whether people think that's right, whether they think it's wrong, I don't care."
BlackSoultan 2 years ago
I'm gay and that's a load of bigoted nonsense.
ScinLaeca358 2 years ago
What exactly are you responding to because I can't tell from the thread. And for the record, there is nothing in the Bible that ever said Black people were the cursed son of Ham. In fact, the bible says we ALL are the descendants of Ham. Again, this is the result of people having no clue whatsoever about the Bible.
Why do you think Slaveowners insisted we not know how to read? We'd figure that out.

FIGHTFANNERD3 2 years ago
Most christians are closed minded to other ideas and philosophies because they have the illusion that they have to be correct because the BIBLE said so. Why cant some people just stop being so ARROGANT? I say believe whatever you want to believe but STOP TRYING TO CONVERT PEOPLE THROUGH FEAR AND MIND CONTROL!!!! That bishop is an example of a "I think I know it all because I believe in a god that may not exist"
Xeper9911 2 years ago
Most people aren't trying to convert others through "fear and mind control". That's not how it's supposed to be done. People need to be willing to hear the answers to the questions that they have. It is then up to THEM to make decisions based on those answers. Christians don't then follow you around and hit you with Bibles. It's simply a matter of "Do You. I'mma do Me". But don't ask a Christian questions if you don't want them to give you answers you may not be ready to live with yet.

Can you believe that people actually applauded this Taliban-style threat? Disgusting.
buddhasknowbest 2 years ago 38
taliban, that sort of thinking is found in all religions
freshprinceofbalham 2 years ago 3
Right, because clearly that means he's going to go hijack planes? Taliban? Okay.
I wonder why people get so angry by Christianity. Anybody up in arms about Judaism? Hinduism? Everyone believes they have the answer, but something in people's souls really gets riled up in the presence of any discussion about Jesus. Why does one's virulence make that distinction?
BlackSoultan 2 years ago
Are you that blind. People aren't pissed at Christianity for no reason, are certainly not because they wanna be sinful rebels. You see videos of little children being injected with guilt and fear in religious camps and you see religious people taking rights from others. You also see idiots like the WBC picketting funeral. America's most fallowed religion is Christianity, so ofcourse we aren't attacking other religions as much.
clipsryan 2 years ago
Religious people taking rights away from others? Who? Right winged nutjobs? Oh, I know: devout "Christians" like Palin and Bush? What I'm telling you is that those people aren't "Christians". They can recite the bible all day and have no idea what it means. Again, you like Maher are holding up complete and utter morons and trying to pass them off like Christians. That's EXACTLY like looking at Bin Laden and going "All muslims are crazy terrorists!"
BlackSoultan 2 years ago
It's funny how when you don't agree with their actions, you don't call them Christians but I'm sure if you had any common sense, you'd not agree with the bible. No all muslims are as irrational and weak minded as any theist.
clipsryan 2 years ago
I disagree with anyone who claims to be Christian but runs counter to the Bible. Don't try to act like you know me. I'm TELLING you who I am.
"It's funny how when you..." can't lump me in a group of backwards minded idiots and point at us all as one horrible band.
Again, sorry that you refuse to get it. You don't have to believe what I believe, but why be such a hater? I'm not Jewish, but I don't have to hate on them.
BlackSoultan 2 years ago
And for the record, I'm looking at your profile, and you single out Christians. You do know that basically EVERY religion has something against homosexualiity, right? I mean, Islam, Israel and Christianity are pretty much in direct alignment with those things. I ask again: why are you singling out Christians? Because Jews have religious camps like a MUG! 10x more than we do. Same with Islam. Christianity is about as lib as it gets...
BlackSoultan 2 years ago
Any religion that criminalizes sexuality in general, and homosexuality in particular - as many of them do, you're right about that - does so out of a fundamental ignorance of nature, perpetuated through generations of sectarian training.
I don't HAVE to make sweeping generalizations about Xians or Jews or Muslims. Their respective religions do it for me. Your religion has obviously convinced you that you know more about homosexuals than they know about themselves. THAT is the problem.
ScinLaeca358 2 years ago
"Your religion has OBVIOUSLY convinced you that you know more about homosexuals than they know about themselves. THAT is the problem"
Really? Because it seems clearer to me that the PROBLEM is that you've made this assumption about me without knowing a thing about me. In your mind, I'm apparently just every other religious heretic you've met or imagined. Get off that.
BlackSoultan 2 years ago
I know in these comments you've repeatedly defended Xianity & other religions for reviling homosexuality. That's all I need to know here. I brought up the Curse of Ham analogy because a lot of people don't give a damn about homos, and would never see the crime in treating them this way; but when you show that the same scam happened to black people, MAYBE they can muster some actual empathy.
Xians themselves were once the day's whipping-boys; now they're just perpetuating the cycle of abuse.
ScinLaeca358 2 years ago
What exactly do you think Christians did TO gays that was so bad? You said something about criminalizing sexual behavior? Really? Criminalizing? You are in a sense demonizing a "religion" that you are proving to know excruciatingly little about.
BlackSoultan 2 years ago
What religion has the most money? What religion dominates my country and most of others? That's why. Sorry, I'll replace Christianity with All Religion, thanks.
clipsryan 2 years ago
So your issue isn't really with Christianity or Religion, but it is instead with preconceived notions about christianity while it remains such a large international power.
BlackSoultan 2 years ago
It's with any irrational belief that lacks empirical evidence and still makes money and brain washes adults and children. Any time someone puts responsiblity on a God, they're asking for trouble and anyone who doesn't, should realize their belief in a God is irrelevant.
clipsryan 2 years ago
So what you're telling me is you don't know what "brainwashing" means? Because there's a huge difference between being "brainwashed" and "faith". I'd suggest you look it up.
Guys, seriously: Lies and half truths aren't going to work here. Yes, there are some "churches" that try to brainwash. Usually, they're on TV. I go by what's in the Bible, not what a pimp tells a bunch of idiots. If you can't tell the difference, then fall back. You don't know what you're talking about.
BlackSoultan 2 years ago

I've been there, I know it for a fact.

It's so frustrating when a preacher/bishop says all this bullshit and then never answers good questions like the fact of other churches ideas and other beliefs. It always falls under the vague rule and idea of god's controll.
clipsryan 2 years ago
No, it doesn't fall under the vague rule of God's control. It falls under the vague rule of no one paying attention in any world history class ever. I'll say it like Ceelo Green: "In the end, we'll see." Agree to disagree and walk on.
