He was not looked too fondly by some black folk in America, on top of that the civil rights issue at the time, so on a social level he was caught in the middle. He did stand up for black students that were not allowed into schools with with kids.

I've always thought that Louis was being satirical with this song. And, I guess, someone else does, too - so thanks for posting this intelligent video.
