My dad started smoking at 12 years old. He's 72 now and still around and still smoking. Yes smoking is bad for you. some more than others, but if you smoke moderately say 5 or ten a day, chances are you will be fine.
Not encouraging smoking here, but if your going to do it, keep it down. All those black lung pics are from 2 pack a day 40 years smokers.
@niltomega I got news for you - smoking - any amount - causes tissue death each and every time. I'd like to see your 72 year old father climb a few flights of stairs, or high up a hillside, or (like a 74 year old I used to know) run a half-marathon and beat several people three and four times younger than him! It can not only kill you, but it affects your blood pressure, heart, and lungs every single day that you smoke.
The car scene lasted exactly 3 minutes without a cut.. Scenes rarely last more than ten seconds today. I remember when I could fall asleep with the TV on. Now it's like trying to sleep in a strobe light.
Funny how people go on about smoking. In the UK drinking causes far more deaths
directly and indirectly (violence, drink driving etc) than smoking. It also costs the country FAR more than smoking. There are all the smashed up town centres on a Friday and Saturday night for a start. There are thousands of women with men who are violent after drinking. I bet they would rather their partnered smoked instead !
Lol first of all this movie was not based in the 70's it was during the great depression which was in the 1930's and during those years kids smoked, drank and some even had jobs working in the fields or whatever they could find. Seems not many of you know your history but kids then were a lot different then kids today. My grandmother was a child during that time and dropped out of school to pick cotton.
In 1970 there was a smoking area for the kids in my high school to go to. All they needed was a permission slip from their parent. There were many popular kids out there every hour between class. i know because one ask me for a fight and wanted me to meet him there. (I kicked his ass)
Anyway smoking was no big deal in the 70's and i did not start smoking till I was 20 and allowed to be legaly dumb. I am now going on 35 years and I still love it.
Just so everyone knows.. the cigerettes that Tatum was skoming in this movie where "prop" cigerettes. They where made of lettece not tobacco... They where made by a company in Texas. There was no addictive properties all to them and she was able to quit the day shooting stopped.
What is amazing about this movie is how they captured the era so well. The buildings, the locations. Everything. Must have been a great location scout out there.
For anyone who wasn't a child of the 70's and can't get over the shock of a kid smoking, allow me to enlighten you. A 9 or 10 year old who smoked wasn't at all uncommon then. Many even smoked publicly since they only had to worry about the wrath of their parents, and not the law. My middle school actually had a designated smoking area outside -- for the students!
The vast majority of these smoking kids from that era did not turn into crack addicts, so let's just drop theme, eh?
@OxcartUser Yeah, I smoked in public when i was 12... that was in 1994. At 14 I was in Young Life (the religious teen club that was really just an excuse to go out on a Monday night). None of the adults cared about smoking. If the meeting was at a smoking house, there was a room full of kids lighting up. When we went to Castaway camp, there were parental waivers for smoking. It allowed us to bring a carton and smoke around the fire!
I remember at the time how controversial her smoking in the film was. In truth, they were actually lettuce cirgarettes that they had her smoke in the movie.
She was smoking pot this young and doing qualudes too, thanks to her dad. All three of his kids have major drug problems. He and Redmond were recently busted for have crank at the house. Ryan has turned his back on Tatum and Griffith. What a sorry excuse for a father.
Ryan also has a son Patrick O'Neal who I assume doesn't keep in contact with also. It's so sad to be in that O'Neal family. And I thought the family of John Phillips was messed up. At least they actually loved each other.
The O'Neal family has a long way to go to healing. And since Ryan blames the kids, even though he admitted he never should have had any, I don't see them ever coming together. I wish Tatum would stop reaching out to Ryan, he will only hurt her again.
No, the had a relationship. Joe Jackson, tried to keep Michael away from all girls because all he wanted the kids to do is work. And at the time Ryan was dating Diana Ross.
I want to send my regards for Tatum to someone who knew her. PJ, Tatum is a gem, a tender soul from a hard family. Never know who you're going to meet on You Tube. "gotta be from somewhere..." Hey! We're from everywhere. Take care.
PJ,thank you for your comment and you were fantastic yourself in this movie. My heart broke to hear the latest, ,but she is fine woman and she will get through this like she has all the other things in her life. just sign me one fan who believes in her.

"You know that little white stuff on toppa chicken doo doo? Well, that's the kinda white I think Miss Trixie is. She's just like that little white speck on toppa ol' chicken shit!" Priceless!
Ugh what a cutie Tatum was. Such a little peanut. How could Ryan EVER hurt such a gorgeous little child? How can he look at her and feel no remorse to this day? He does not deserve her.
Tatum said in an interview that the cigarettes were made of lettuce. They were not tobacco.
