Anyone who found this documentary thought provoking should listen to some Alan Watts and Terence McKenna lectures, particularly on the topic of conforming to culture/society.
This is a great clip. Yep, it's all friggin garbage that is broadcast into our minds and souls from the media. Ideas about how we need to look, act, how we should feel about ourselves based on our job, bank account, address, etc. I say stay away from most media and immerse youself in philosophy books, great literature and art, music. And anyone that makes you feel like you're not good enough, remove them from your life.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Totally agree with you there. It's also the most liberating of all feelings, just being true to yourself, doing what you genuinely enjoy, being around people you feel comfortable with disregarding their social background, escaping the fakeness, smoking pot and then reading some books on philosophical matters.
While I do agree with the majority of your statement I beg to differ on your last sentence. To remove irritants and pests is to only treat the symptoms and not the disease. Instead one should question why is there a need to loath oneself and one's place in life in comparison to others. It is in the end it is us who decides the worth of who we are, our life and our choices. Even if someone should disagree with me, it matters not if I am sure of my own answer, my reason for being.
@spikkiy You are absolutely right of course and that needed to be said. I do feel however that it's important to stay away from people who continuously tear us down, until we can get to the point where we are so sure of ourselves that it doesn't matter.

Although I forgot to mention that it can be a rather esoterically lonely way of life...

@WhateverWasLeft To be a philosopher is to be alone. :)
