it is sad that Indians try to be whiter, but being an Indian i can vouch for many Indians in saying that we are culturally more attracted to whiter skin. As one of the reporters mentioned, people try to get darker in in the US, so it goes both ways. It is not racist, but a cultural thing. However, with this said, I agree ultimately we should all be comfortable in our skin.

Im a Pakistani Canadian and my girlfriend is from india thats has given me a chance to visit both Pakistan and India. This culture problem is a very very old one. Actually one of the best selling skin creams in both India and Pakistan is "Fair and Lovely" a cream whose whole purpose is to make ur skin more fair and lovely (Its in the name), it is probably the most common product owned by both a majority of Indian and Pakistani women

As I said, colour of skin is not a political issue in India. So this ad is no big deal. We have our own issues. No ad in India would trivialize caste, because caste IS a sensitive issue. Colour is NOT. It is all about burdens of history and local context. It is silly to judge our cultural contexts by American measures.

About 50% of my family is quite fair and the other 50% is quite dark (I am one of the dark ones). For Indians, skin colour is just a feature...some just turn out fair, some dark. Most Bollywood actresses are of light complexion, reinforcing the perceptions that light is better. If the media was more representative and promoted the beauty of Indians of all skintones the perceptions could change with time. But first the majority would need to acknowledge the imbalance.

Slowly being dark became associated with being poor and being fair is associated with being rich, higher status etc, This unhealthy obsession is being carried to this day and kept alive by the media ads, male & female leads in the movies who have fair skins.

Tanning is a natural phenomenon that occurs in human nature, to have a tan was once said to be kissed by the sun. It's the innate proof of the gloriousness of naturally have melanin and furthermore tans go away in time. Skin bleaching is not natural and is directly emulating whites becuz beautify norms reflect culture and nothing in Indian culture prior to Colonial days would point to white as beautiful.

I'm not sure if the commentators are aware that skin lightening is a custom in Asia that's been going on for hundreds, if not thousands of years? Perpetuated by the Chinese, Japanese, and Indian races themselves? It's considered a sign of wealth, or of being part of the, "upper class," the reason being that those with dark skin are seen as laborers (working in the sun). This has nothing to do with race, but with culture. The latter half of the commentary was more on point.

it is sad that Indians try to be whiter, but being an Indian i can vouch for many Indians in saying that we are culturally more attracted to whiter skin. As one of the reporters mentioned, people try to get darker in in the US, so it goes both ways. It is not racist, but a cultural thing. However, with this said, I agree ultimately we should all be comfortable in our skin.

Actually one of the best selling skin creams in both India and Pakistan is "Fair and Lovely" a cream whose whole purpose is to make ur skin more fair and lovely (Its in the name), it is probably the most common product owned by both a majority of Indian and Pakistani women

Dark skin is merely an aesthetic difference. In the Sudan, genocide is being committed partly based on slight ethnic differences. @buzzin1975 In ancient India peasants & laborers(low caste) had to do the hardwork outside in the sun and got dark skin, while the rich nobility(higher caste) mostly stayed indoors and remained fair skinned. Slowly being dark became associated with being poor and being fair is associated with being rich, higher status etc, This unhealthy obsession is being carried to this day and kept alive by the media ads, male & female leads in the movies who have fair skins.

Tanning is a natural phenomenon that occurs in human nature, to have a tan was once said to be kissed by the sun. It's the innate proof of the gloriousness of naturally have melanin and furthermore tans go away in time. Skin bleaching is not natural and is directly emulating whites becuz beautify norms reflect culture and nothing in Indian culture prior to Colonial days would point to white as beautiful.

I'm not sure if the commentators are aware that skin lightening is a custom in Asia that's been going on for hundreds, if not thousands of years? Perpetuated by the Chinese, Japanese, and Indian races themselves? It's considered a sign of wealth, or of being part of the, "upper class," the reason being that those with dark skin are seen as laborers (working in the sun). This has nothing to do with race, but with culture. The latter half of the commentary was more on point.
