There was no digital recording back then!  This must have been made on reel to reel tapes. How do you get such clear sound on a tape?

Reel to reel recorders (analog) used in studios were vastly superior to CD and DAT quality sound and available high end digital recorders with higher spec. In the same year (1984) the Pet Shop Boys' album Please was recorded digitally, and quality is good but lower.

I like many Depeche Mode songs, but this is definitely not one of my favourites, mainly because it's so uneven. It has great moody atmosphere before the chorus that just totally tears it apart. No matter how many times I hear it, I can't seem to get used to it, and even if I could, it still wouldn't make it good. Also, even though the lyrics tell a nice story and all, they seem somehow uneven and don't flow well at any part of the song. Way overrated, mesays.
