No, this isn't Adagio. It's a reprise of the last thirty seconds of Apocalypse Please. Listen to AP from the 3:40 point. Then listen to this, but imagine those piano chords being played over it. It's not in the same key, but it's definitely the same concept. This is what ties the whole album together really.
I don't know why.. back in 2003, when i first listen to this.. i was like "Oh my god.. this is orgasmic.. " and i felt like the guy on the artwork "Somebody is coming.." :P i think it is a clearly point where the album changes.... anyway, from that day to know, everytime i want to listen to Hysteria, i always listen to this before..
Damn. I get such a strange feeling when I listen to this interlude. It's hard to explain but it's a really moving and almost tragic sound on the ears...
@Maindsy88 That's because Muse sampled the chords from Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings for this song -- and Adagio for Strings is one of the most singularly heart-wrenching and tear-jerking yet exquisitely beautiful pieces of music ever composed.
This is definitely inspired by Adadio for Strings, but its not really a copy. Only the first progression is similar, the rest resembles AFS in style but not note-for-note. Also AFS is in B-flat minor, this is in A minor :)
@barfrog101 Ha, I thought of adagio for strings as soon as i heard the first chord change. That's funny, I didn't think anyone else heard that as well!
@Dozoy This is true, but if you listen to the very end of Apocalypse Please, this has the same chord progression. I think this is what ties the whole album together, like a concept album or something.
This is not a "riff" at all. It's a very forward moving melodic progression. Also based on a fairly common chordal sequence. I'm certain Samuel Barber wasn't the first one to use it.
This is my favorite from Muse I think. I believe though that they shouldn't have made a song out of it, it is just wonderful as it is. This is what makes the band so special; Even one small bass riff from them can move you :')
I read somewhere that it's loosely based on Adagio For Strings (the famous song from Platoon); the two certainly sound similar in chord progression...
It's just a song on its own, between 'Falling Away With You' and 'Hysteria' on the 'Absolution' album. It's called 'Interlude' and that's the full version.
