It was originally designed as a replacement for the Atari 2600 hardware back in the late 70's, but not released to consumers until years later. Management was against replacing the aging hardware of the VCS so soon. While the right decision in the short term, the two sprites and a missile display technology was obsolete for anything much more advanced than Pong. Even Space Invaders required programming tricks. To many, Atari became a name synonymous with stone age gaming...
