You are correct. If memory serves me correctly, Cameron followed David to save Steve. You see him briefly two scenes before he is jumped upon. Check out 2:30 and you will see he is the one looking at Steve who is standing like a deer in the headlights. When Steve is attacked Cameron runs. David shows up then.

I saw that coming, but then I'm an inveterate cinephile and see EVERYTHING coming. Nevertheless it was well written, acted and filmed as usual. I hope this was a red herring though, because it would be truly awful if she were to be killed off after that tender moment.
