Actually this game DOES punish you for exploring in the second area. Go to the right too far and you get completely unbeatable enemies at your current level when you get there.
I went with a Male Hero, Pilgrim, and Wizard with a Female Fighter in my first playthrough (GBC). I then changed my Wizard into a Fighter, and my Fighter and to a Sage.
Sadly, my GBC is broken, so I can't play thorugh it again... :(
I remember finding a glitch in the GBC version of this game when I had it a long time ago....it brought my hero up to his max level! and I'm going wtf when it happened
Hey, HC. I'm still new to the world of Dragon Warrior. I've seen family play it but I've never really had time. So thanks for this walkthrough on it. I like watching people play more then playing it myself.
I first met you with your Walkthrough of Chrono Trigger and I gotta say, you do a great job on your Let's Plays
Wow, the hero must be pretty paranoid to sleep fully armored. He probably suspects something suspicious about that person in the room right across from him.
Since I played through DW2-4 so close together 10 years ago, I'm having trouble sometimes remembering what was in which game. DW3 especially gets jumbled with the others since the player characters are all blank slates in that one, and all I remember was a ton of item quests.
The Japanese version of DQ3 didn't have the cutscene. In fact, the first three Japanese games had more primitive graphics overall.
My name is Solo Ortega. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
Speeking of ultima. I'm playing ultima 4 on the sega master system and for some reason after about 10 minuets of gameplay my characters HP starts to drop by 1 after every step I take. I have enough food and I'm not poisoned but I don't know what's causing my HP to do that. If any one knows please help!!!
So let me think about this: The King was waiting for Ortega's Son about 10 or more years to grow up to the age of 16 and THEN maybe try and find about Ortega, and rescue him if possible... What were they thinking?!?!?! O_O
I wonder if Fighters in the NES version get a higher chance of critical strikes as they level like they do in the GBC port of it. If you know HCBailly or if someone else does that would be great. They may have just added that in as a perk for the GBC though. Ya never know.
its not that you cant learn any more spells after using the registry glitch... its just u cant use heal or return outside of battle unless you already learned them the normal way
HCBaily, you should try out Disgaea. It's a strategy RPG in which you comand units, and it's a little unheard, and had a quiet release. It's interesting, and has the same concept of making characters, and having differant classes, as well as weapon levels and around... 7 kinds of weapons (I can't remember right now, there might be a bit more, 1-2 maybe). It's for the PS2.
Watching these really makes me hope you play the newer Dragon Quest games, specifically VIII. I played through it, but it seems when you play through games HC, it always gives them such a fresh breath of life. Even if they're classics, such as this game.
@chaosvincentvalentin Because the NES version is the original. I don't know about HCBailly, but I like the nostalgia. For example, I always play the NES version of FF even though I have the other versions for that very reason.
The reason Dragon Quest and Dragon Warrior are so similiar are because they are the exact same thing. In Japan they were always Dragon Quest, but in America they were called Dragon Warrior up until 2005. They called it Dragon Warrior to avoid a lawsuit, up until the company they wanted to avoid went bankrupt so they were able to take the name Dragon Quest.
I'm confused HCBailly, you sometimes name a game called Dragon Quest, is it the same game as Dragon Warrior just that it has a different name in different parts of the world?
Hey HCbaily have you played dragon quest IX sentinels of the starry skies? you know what would be awesome?if you made a lets play dragon quest sentinels of the starry skies!! hahaha! that would be sooo cool man!! plz?!! :D
Not only is that my party in dragon quest III, it's also my party in dragon quest IV. I'm really glad you chose this game to let's play though! Your dragon quest reviews are my favorites, though it may just be nostalgia.
Though I'm not actually sure that applies in this situation, since it tends to imply things like magically powered trains, aircraft, radio... stuff like that.
DQ really isn't anything-punk. It's just fantasy. It's not gritty enough to be a "punk" setting.
@Darlos9D Just saying that Dragon Quest isn't considered only 'fantasy.' It touches more than one genre with the dungeon series, monsters series, swords, heroes series, and now wars game. You can't loop all the games into one category if you only know a single one from the series. DQ is like a giant, slime-filled monopoly.
@JessicaAlbert13 Alright. I was still only referring to the main series (DQ1-9) which is primarily straight fantasy, give or take some little elements here or there (like a flying train in 9). And I have played all of those.
I admit I know nothing about any of the side spinoff games or series (besides Swords, which I own) but I will reiterate: I wasn't talking about those.
@Darlos9D I've just been playing waaay too much Rocket Slime and thus quick to defend DQ and Boingburg as a result. I know you meant no harm but I got peeved when you said the games aren't 'gritty' considering the games even have an ability called 'Gritty Ditty.'
Dragon Quest III is, unfortunately, my least favourite Dragon Quest game in the entire series. The whole personality changing and how it affects stat growth just didn't fit with me.
The recruitment system kind of reminds me of ff tactics, except its alot better hear because you don't have to pay to get them and you can choose their class as you make them..I wonder if the class system is better than tactics ^-^
@KentoKaima Actually i wouldnt say the class system is better than tactics (if your talking about the advance version because i havent played the others) because in tactics advance there is just alot of classes and many diffrent ways of making them
OMG, I can't tell you how much I was looking forward for this. Here I am, sitting in my armchair with a really nasty flu, not allowed to visit my girlfriend or go with my friends to the pub, really pissed off about life, the world and everything and all of a sudden I see that there's a new Dragon Warrior LP by HCBailly!
@HCBailly - What is your opinion on the GB remake? I for one rather enjoyed it. The addition of the Thief class (always love Thieves) made a good improvement, Merchant's got a cadre of odd, but interesting abilities. (YellHelp is probably one of my favorites) and it seems as if DW3GB actually allowed a greater variation of of characters with the ability to give characters Seeds from their registration and the Personalities, I loved the Personality set up.
Actually there *are* several spots in this game where you can accidentally bump into unreasonably difficult monsters. And most of them are found quite early on!
I wish the physical stats of the Wizard and Pilgrim had been the other way around. I wonder if anyone's done this with a game hack, and if not, how difficult it would be to create one.
I remember begging my Mom to get this game for Christmas when I was a kid, and her dishing out 50 or so dollars to do so. It was probably my favorite game in my entire NES library(I didn't own DW4).
HCBaily do you think if ou get a dazzle or somthing of that sort would you be inclined to play 3D Dot Game Heroes? I would think you would do a great job of doing it and it would be a good way to tie in all the dragon quest games your doing. With all the in games jestures to those and other rpg's you have done. (sorry if this is a bit long)
Beginning at 7:20...I agree about the battle mechanics here. A huge improvement over the first two games. And they're also quite a bit better than any of the three 8-bit Final Fantasies. I think the reason is that as Enix, and eventually Square, saw their business fortunes improve, they could set larger design budgets and hire more qualified battle mechanics engineers (likely people with a math degree!).
I've never played any of the dragon warrior games, I tried 7 but couldn't get into it. I'm looking forward to seeing what it's all about. And, HOLY CRAP IS THAT TROGDOR?!?
@VashFanboy1 VII is one of the harder ones to get into, and it takes FOREVER. You should try IV. It's a great RPG with an awesome story and a nifty chapter system that I wish more games used.
For those of you who don't k now, DW III is actually a prequel, and it sets up the events in DW I. DW II takes place like a hundred years after DW I.
There is actually a bit of grinding, although not much. Good luck getting past the Cave of the Necrogond at a low level. When I first played this game years ago I got stuck there and never beat it. I only beat it some years ago on an emulator.
Yay, DWIII! I like the Super Famicom version, though..and the Thief class that's in it. This is my favorite of the first three games as there's a lot to do, a lot of different ways you can put a party together, being able to have a stable of heroes that you can call upon for certain situations (though for that to be practical you have to grind a lot)..this is just pure old-school goodness.
This game is great! I love how they incorporated the cutscene in the beginning. Dragon Warrior (Quest) series is so light hearted and cheerey... except when a warrior is pulled into a caldera... or when a princess "must" marry you... or a city falls to ruin and the princess it turned into a dog. "For all of the gold in Alfgood... I refuse to name my dog Ruffles."
@blkstarzx357 There's a few pieces of equipment that only women can use, but nothing significant. There's only one that I would even consider using and even that's not so great. Stats don't vary by gender.
I guess there is some magic bikini or something I'm not sure I haven't played Dragon Warrior 3 in a while I might play it again since I have it on emulator been playing Final Fantasy 4 and 5 Advance and Dragon Quest 6
@moh490234890238490 What the heck are Stone and Sandal punk though? All of the "punk" genres tend to imply that a certain power source and type of mechanisms came to dominate all others for whatever reason, and lead to a level of technology comparable or at least approaching our own (except for cyberpunk, which instead look at the future of our own technology). Clock through Bio all point at obvious examples... but I don't know what those two would be.
@Darlos9D Stone Punk: (Stone Age) Bamboo Technology based Punk. One of the few played-straight examples is Jade Empire, using plenty of bamboo Magitek in a Fantasy Counterpart Culture for ancient China.
Sandal Punk: (Bronze and Iron Age) Ancient Astronauts (or Atlantis) impact the dawning classical civilization.
@moh490234890238490 When I think Stone Punk, I think of The Flintstones. Can you imagine a world like that, done seriously instead of comedically? The mind boggles. Very carefully.
Just watched one of you Final Fantasy VIII videos, where you get the Brothers GF, and you said you've played Myst and Riven... you should consider it greatly after this and FFXIII of course.
Great first vid, HC! My older brother considers this to be his least favorite in the series. I guess he didn't really like the little "Build your own party" aspect. He said they actually handled it better in IX, but I'm not as hardcore about the series as he is, so I wouldn't know. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next! Keep up the brilliant work! XD
Oh, by the way, what do you think of the Symphonic Suites for the Dragon Quest series? I personally think they're awesome... XD
@Anonymus711 why is that? lvl grinding is just the hapless murder of X things for no real benefit to the game itself. Movies at least give character feelings and better show off areas and towns.
There's a day/night system in this game?? This was made in 1987 with those specs? holy crap that's insanely awesome. Looking forward to this LP! But Tou Must watch this!
This is definitely my favorite of the series (actually, its the only game in the series I *like*). I think its because I played the GBC version, and I was amazed at how much content they managed to put in a gameboy color game

@slymily yes, yes it is. I was thinking that this is a pretty graphic opening for an NES game.
MisterCrim 1 year ago
HCBaily do you think if ou get a dazzle or somthing of that sort would you be inclined to play 3D Dot Game Heroes? I would think you would do a great job of doing it and it would be a good way to tie in all the dragon quest games your doing. With all the in games jestures to those and other rpg's you have done. (sorry if this is a bit long)

Beginning at 7:20...I agree about the battle mechanics here. A huge improvement over the first two games. And they're also quite a bit better than any of the three 8-bit Final Fantasies. I think the reason is that as Enix, and eventually Square, saw their business fortunes improve, they could set larger design budgets and hire more qualified battle mechanics engineers (likely people with a math degree!).

this game came with its own strategy guide?
Earthbound for the SNES did the same thing...although, the Earthbound guide had these...weird scratch and sniff cards of the bosses...

@VashFanboy1 VII is one of the harder ones to get into, and it takes FOREVER. You should try IV. It's a great RPG with an awesome story and a nifty chapter system that I wish more games used.

@FreeCorps Thanks I'll give it a try sometime.

FreeCorps 1 year ago
Been waiting for you to do this, IV, and V for a long time...thanks!

Yay, DWIII! I like the Super Famicom version, though..and the Thief class that's in it. This is my favorite of the first three games as there's a lot to do, a lot of different ways you can put a party together, being able to have a stable of heroes that you can call upon for certain situations (though for that to be practical you have to grind a lot)..this is just pure old-school goodness.
blackswan707 1 year ago
Oh...my...giddy...aunt!!!
When I was younger and had actual time for these, I used to rank the time table like this...
- Dragon Warrior 1. - 1 week, tops.
- Dragon Warrior 2. - 1 month, if slow.
- Dragon Warrior 4. - A month, period.
- Dragon Warrior 3. - Good bye, year!
Of course, since half the game is just grinding against the same monsters...editing will shave it to pure plot. Yay!

Holy crap, 1987 and an animation of that quality? Daaaaayum.
Also I like how he chops the dragons' wing off and didn't just do one of the samurai run-past things.

To be honest, i liked the GBC version of this game better.... especially because of the personality thing in the begining

woot, my favorite of the original three DQs
I'm glad DQIX took so much inspiration from this one

This game is great! I love how they incorporated the cutscene in the beginning. Dragon Warrior (Quest) series is so light hearted and cheerey... except when a warrior is pulled into a caldera... or when a princess "must" marry you... or a city falls to ruin and the princess it turned into a dog. "For all of the gold in Alfgood... I refuse to name my dog Ruffles."

HCBailly, is there a difference between male and female party members?
blkstarzx357 1 year ago
@blkstarzx357 There's a few pieces of equipment that only women can use, but nothing significant. There's only one that I would even consider using and even that's not so great. Stats don't vary by gender.

Darlos9D 1 year ago
@Darlos9D Stone Punk: (Stone Age) Bamboo Technology based Punk. One of the few played-straight examples is Jade Empire, using plenty of bamboo Magitek in a Fantasy Counterpart Culture for ancient China.
Sandal Punk: (Bronze and Iron Age) Ancient Astronauts (or Atlantis) impact the dawning classical civilization.
moh490234890238490 1 year ago

XD

90% of the time is level grinding? Why would I fear that? I fear 90% of the time being movies.

@Anonymus711 Hey, hey, hey. Don't insult Final Fantasy in an HCBailly video. :P
red16mage 1 year ago
@Anonymus711 why is that? lvl grinding is just the hapless murder of X things for no real benefit to the game itself. Movies at least give character feelings and better show off areas and towns.

This is definitely my favorite of the series (actually, its the only game in the series I *like*). I think its because I played the GBC version, and I was amazed at how much content they managed to put in a gameboy color game
