  • good video more people need to realize this

  • I think what also makes it a problem is ourselves. As a Dominican with clearly African roots my people are unwilling to call themselves black. They call themselves "Indio/a" and when they get to the U.S. the situation becomes further confusing. Because they are either A) white but the census considers all Dominicans and Dominican-Americans black or B) they really are black and they are in complete denial and shock.

  • I thought I was the only hispanic (Dominican to be more exact) having this problem. I have actually had people tell me I am white because there is no way I could be black. I have had African-Americans tell me I am not black because I do not know what it means "to be black". People are ignorant and have no idea that Hispanic is not a race hence why they are not counted as such in any census. There are black and white Hispanics. Its honestly kinda offensive.

  • I try to explain this to people but never understand.

  • I dont get it. Are there more than 1 million afro-latins in the U.S.?

also the majority of people tend to label populations on skin color. the vast majority of latino's are brown-skinned or lighter.

The way i see it, and many are going to argue with me on this, is that Afro-latins should get used to be called black, because future generations of afro-latins in the US will forget spanish and just be considered black anyway. Embrace it. Blacks have a great history in this country.

  • I check African and Other Latino which would be Dominican.

  • The problem with some Black Latinos is that America is racialy charged so you are black, white, or white hispanic. You pick a side and thats how your judged. Some latinos that look more black than some white and black mixed people deny there African bloodline.

  • On the census I checked white, black, Native Native American, Hispanic and put Triracial.

  • on the census, I check Black and Hispanic however. But I just think saying that I'm Latina in day to day life will make much of a difference as opposed to saying I'm Black and Hispanic, or Afro-Latina.

  • I'm 50% Puerto Rican and 50% African-American and I identify as Afro-Latina. But people always think I'm 100% Black. Some probably think I'm mixed Black-White because I was adopted by a white woman and a black man. Maybe I should start identifying as soley Latina as some of the comments suggested because Black Latino's are 1. always being mistaken for beng 100% Black (or mixed with something they're not in some cases) and 2. always being questioned about their Latin roots.

  • Also check out the website vidaafrolatina

  • This group has to be the most confused group to others in the states! As well as West Indian people. People seem to just not understand that there are people of many different races in Latin American (black, white, asian, native, w/e).I try to exPLAIN BUT PPL SAY HOW YOU BLACK AND HISPANIC. im saying hispanic isnt a race! but ignorance will always be here & im afro-panamanian !

  • Im black and mexican i see that alot people think that blacks can't be latino . and alot people don't know is that alot popular music genres were started by afrolatinos.

  • They should make a category for native latinos and mestiza latinos

  • @lui920 Exactly! Fair is fair! Why is the black always pointed out in anything? They need to do that for mestizo and Amerindian and white latinos also! Because other latinos just get to call themselves latino and some even get to incorrectly identify themselves as white!

  • @balantaasante Um, why are you ranting and raving??? I actually agree w/ the things you are saying now, and last time we spoke I was in agreement w/ what you said! You missed my point! I was saying if a Latino is supposed to be a latino why does the black have to be pointed out! If we want to break all stereotypes why not go for them all and have ALL Latinos mark their racial roots whether mixed or monoracial in identity! Afrodescent Latinos are always being told and forced to say they are black

  • @chsn09 I GIVE THANX.....Your right, I apologize for my poor focus....

    B. Asante

  • @chsn09 I always see latinos Identifying as anything but black even if they are black as me... Im 100% cuban but have to argue with other black latinos that we are actually black and not dark skinned cuz we are indian... the black is always pointed out becuz its always being hidden

  • @tyty123479 Yep. But please re read my comment. I said/asked why is the black always the thing that is pointed out and seperated from a particular group, entity, faction or respective category or labeling but meanwhile others are not called out? The black is NOT always hidden. It may often be downplayed or not talked about. But for example, why can't a black person just be an American? Why can't a black person be a Latino? Why does a black person have to state the obvious?

  • @chsn09 I am fully Latino. I am also fully black. people dont seem to understand that the 2 can coexist. I never try to separate myself or other afrodecendants from wtv ethnic group they r in. I reject the term afro latino & african/afro-american becuz it makes me sound like somethin other than American or Latino becuz mixed or white latinos r calld simply latino/a & white americans r jus american. I love my african ancestry but I am more than jus African,or American or Latino. Im 100% all 3

  • @tyty123479 Just call yourself a Latino then. Yes I understand who and what Afro Latinos are. They are Latinos just like anyone else. Latino is NOT even a race. They can be of any race.

  • @tyty123479 I think all Latinos need to be racialized if they are going to racialize the black faction. It is a double standard and unfair to racialize one grouping.

  • @tyty123479 I never thought of it like that. That's very true. It is unfair how White Latino's, and other Latino's with light skin, can simply say "I'm Latino" and no one will question it. But Afro Latino's have to state that they're Afro Latino in order to be recognized, and even when they do people still question it.

  • @tyty123479 For example if someone sees a mixed person of afrodescent or mulatto etc, they always get pointed out as not being Latino or not being a Creole or whatever respective group.

That is totally unfair. Ppl have to question it?

  • @lui920 I think the U.S census has one for native/indigenous. But mestizos and mulatos would generally mark mixed since those options arent available here

  • @lapluma85 I agree they do need to because their should be fairness

  • @lui920 they do... most people dont notice

  • @lui920 There is no section for afro latinos they are telling them to check hispanic and black... native american is also an option as is white and asian or u can simply check other

  • true

  • NEWS...

UNLESS a LATINO person CHOOSES OTHERWISE, the U.S. Federal Government NOW lists 'WHITE' as the DEFAULT "race" FOR ALL LATINOS (regardless of skin coloring, hair texture, facial features or body shape /size /type).

  • Its sad that people deny their african heritage like its a shameful thing, but when people who have pride for their decent they are hated on. While other descents are encourage to love their heritages as long as its not african of any origin. Sad world.

  • @ajackson17 so true!!

  • this is America and this so called Afro-Latino doesn't exist here you're Black period, If you wanna be afro-latino you probably should leave America and go back to where you came from simple as that.

  • Its funny how 50% of these arguments/videos werent here last year when the census let you fill in "Hispanic" & be done. Im happy that people are being more aware of Afro-Latinos and all, but when I filled out the census, I actually didnt want to fill in the race question. I mean, "Non-Hispanic White"? "Hispanic-Black"? "Check Indian Tribe"? Its pretty rediculous if you think about it. Before, if you wanted to show that you're an Afro-Latino, all you had to do was check "Hispanic" AND "Black"

  • Latinos is a race

  • @DarkSamurai305 Latino is NOT a race!

  • @chsn09

most people consider it a race so it will be

  • @DarkSamurai305 LMAOO! No ppl treat it as if it were a race when there are no grounds or validity to it being a race! LATINO IS NOT A RACE AND NEVER HAS BEEN! West Indians are actually trying to get their own grouping just like Hispanics/Latinos as well actually lmao!

Hispanics/Latinos are NOT a race but actually they are an ethnolinguistocultural group in the context of USA!

  • @DarkSamurai305 Also if ppl were to consider Latino a race ppl should not be shaking their heads or turning crazy when they see Latinos that are Afrodescent or look black!

Every time a Latino that looks black walks by their Latino ness is questioned which is a big thing that happens in society! If a Latino is a Latino why do Afro latinos have to be singled out? Hmm? that is a racist double standard if you tell me! SMFH!

  • @chsn09

I know alot of black latinos who dont call themselves blacks just Latinos they Puerto Ricans and we dont discriminate

  • @DarkSamurai305 LMAO! You missed my point! I know plenty of Latinos who know they have African dscent but choose identify soley and first and foremost as Hispanic/Latino and not black, but what I am saying is if you read my other comments on here why do Afro/black latinos get pointed out then! Other latinos assume they are not latino w/out even knowing them which is my whole point of Latino being an ambiguous and contradictory label if Afro latinos have to be an outcast w/in their own ppl!

  • @DarkSamurai305 um people also think africa is a country...lol Zoe saldana and Cameron diaz, Gisele bunchen, and Wyclef, are all latinos however , they are not of the same race and, peoples ignorance is not an excuse. When ever that census comes around I put black and latino.

  • @DarkSamurai305

Latino is a CULTURAL group (composed of numerous races & racial admixtures). Latino is NOT a Racial group; an Ethnic group; nor a Nationality.

  • Comment removed

  • To group all Latin American people through terms like Latin or Hispanic is the same thing as if you were to group all American people together as if they were one race, when in reality Americans are black, white, asian, etc....just like Latin-American people are black, white, asian, indigenous, or a mix of these.

There definitely needs to be a petition to get rid of these terms as racial classifications on tests and when filling out forms.

  • I think the US has been dealing with what to classify Latin Americans as very badly. Their solution is to just group all Latin Americans together and call it a race when in reality it's incredibly insulting to say all Latin Americans are one race when it's not a race, it's more of a nationality or a cultural based thing. I mean to say a white Argentinian, a Black Brazilian and an indigenous Bolivian are all the same race is beyond ignorant and moronic.

  • @rvggarcon

Have you ever filled the census?? Because if you did you will see that latin americans or hispanic or latino are not races..

  • @ivoriancutie Have you ever read comments before you reply to them? Because that's exactly what I said, the American government makes these terms seem as races by grouping every single Latin-American together as if they were a race. Every ignorant American thinks they are racial terms, and I think it's the government's fault.

  • @rvggarcon Haitians ARE also Latin Americans! Also the default racial category for Hispanics/Latinos in the states is white regardless of their true ancestral racial/ethnic makeup!

  • Im puerto rican and Im dark skinned and have culry hair. I know that I always considerd myself afro puerto rican

  • @MiirelysLaBorii07

    um?? then what r u???

  • @ivoriancutie Im 100% Puerto Rican

  • @MiirelysLaBorii07

puerto rican is not a race its your nationality...

you can be black and be puerto rican or asian or white

  • @ivoriancutie Well I consider myself Afro-Latina

  • @MiirelysLaBorii07 I give thanx sistren....Jah bless!!

  • yeah, I hate when they say, I'm not black I'm Dominican. Es como si ellos no saben la diferencia entre la raza y la nacionalidad.

  • @reina7663 They say they are NOT black because "black" usually means native African Americans! Also Dominicans in the American context are an ethnocultural group and that is what they are raised as! Also they do not even use the one drop rule like USA if you boil it down to racial identity in views! Most Dominicans are of mixed African, European, and Taino ancestry! So they are Afro-Euro-Indigeno!

  • Rochsg let me make it easy for you are an afro latino.. most domicans are afro latinos but are ashamed of admitting it. But they only fool themselves cus everyone else sees them as afro latinos...

  • @Chappa30329 - Most Dominicans are Not afrolatino. I am Dominican and I am Not afrolatino.

  • @Chappa30329 Yeah, most Dominicans are Afro, but many are also Indigeno, and Euro as well! Most will be precieved as black though by other Americans and Latinos and even from other Dominicans! So what you are saying is true! They will be assumed as something they do not identify with or as!

  • THIS IS GREAT!!! You Should all be counted!!!

  • American, Australian, Polish, Portuguese, etc.

  • Cool! I will spread the word.

  • ... Correia...

What's your cultural background if you don't mind me asking?

  • I have been wondering about this because I am of more than one nationality but I don't call myself african. My father is Dominican and my mother is of African descent so I was confused about the census, this really really really helps, thanks y Gracias!!!
