Take any basic sociology class and if you have any semblance of a metaphorical soul, you'll come to the same conclusions as Mr. Hicks. You'll see just how insidious and pervasive (not to mention damaging to society) marketing is.
@bagadonuts112294 Uh, no he wouldn't. Ever seen how much he hated Reagan? Paul supported Reagan and believes in the same economics. So no, you couldn't possibly be more wrong.
Hicks didn't like Reagan because he started the war on drugs; Bill Hicks loved drugs, hence the youtube video titled "Mandatory Marijuana." Hicks overall motif was freedom of choice as well as generally anti big government. If you were a bit more informed you would realize that Paul wishes to put an end to the war on drugs, and is in strong support of limited government. It's YOU who couldn't be more wrong. P.S. Guys Bill Hicks was a super ego with alot of pent up frustration and that's why he got cancer and died. You want to end up like him, keep arguing, but be warned, it'll send you to an early grave.
@pyramidsofgizah I don't t know about that: Lewis Black doesn't look healthy, has made a career of being really pissed off, and he is about twenty years older than Hicks was when he died.
@pyramidsofgizah Well that ego is pretty understandable. He`s saying try mushrooms... do this and you will see things differently and no one is listening. So it`s understandable that he would get very frustrated with society and feel above it. By the way, he also drank and smoked alot
@zViciousDz Yes, it's actually not a free world, so the saying, "it's a free world" blows up on the launching pad. I like how everyone says that, especially in America.
I think a free world implies that he is allowed to express his own opinions and you are probably taking what he said way out of context you paranoid hyper active mentalist.
@zViciousDz It depends how you want to define "free". We all have free-will, we can do and say what we want. Of course, there may be consequences for those actions, and that is what the argument is.
I'll work what out? Why do you feel like you know some hidden "truth" about the world? This philosophy being proposed by Hicks is nothing new, it has been considered for thousands of years. It has actually been going on since the Bhagavad Gita almost 5,000 years ago when it talks about "The Machine".
word up, you should also check out the documentary on the lost Kogi tribe. The only remaining tribe of pre-colombian South America. The documentary is called "From the heart of the world, the elder brothers warning" check it out.
Too bad, and really f*cked up, that people need to be told what is so obvious. Bill Hicks is not a genious. He is like everyone should be, and would be, if they were honest to themselves and others. He just had the courage and the upright attitude.
Poor man... He should never left us. Maybe things would have been better.
Bill Hicks is being naive. Advertising has rationale, it is promoting a product. If someone has a good product, why not promote/advertise it? The comedy clubs that Hicks worked at needed to advertise to get people to come and get a product(comedy), so WTF is he complaining about? Independent businesses need to advertise to get customers, and non-government relief groups advertise to get donations. Of course there is manipulative marketing, but that doesn't mean it is all bad.
@kylio27 Almost all modern marketing is manipulative, and all manipulation is bad. Even the "father" of the PR industry and modern marketing, Edward Bernays, was a propaganda specialist under Wilson during WWI. He even wrote a book, called "Propaganda." They actually called it that in the early 1900s, because it was before the word has a stigma attached to it. Bernays changed marketing from being informative (product does x, y and z) to appealing to irrational desire. Psychological manipulation.
@RipTheSystem33 "Almost all modern marketing is manipulative"
Key word: ALMOST I explained that much of advertising is pandering, manipulative garbage, but my point is still valid; that it is not innately harmful like Hicks would want you to believe. Many independent businesses would die if they had not ads in the local paper, which goes for comedy clubs...ZING.
I think any rational argument would consider than there is some necessary advertising out there, generally buried under corporate marketing. But, most marketing doesn't operate out of small business, especially TV advertising. Hicks merely pointed to the obvious and gave his opinion about it. As a matter of fact, that's how his comedy works. Not including the exceptions you mention doesn't invalidate the basic point he opines on.
@kylio27 YOU ARE NAIVE TELL ME ONE THING FROM ADVERTISING THAT YOU REALLY NEED AND BILL WILL TELL YOU THAT YOU WERE DOING JUST FINE BEFORE YOU SEEN THE ADVERT THAT WAS OFFERING SAID PRODUCT!... EVERYTHING YOU HAVE YOU THINK YOU NEED BILLS THOUGHTS ARE FROM A HIGHER PLACE BEYOND NAIVETY HE STANDS UP FOR YOU AND YOU STAND UP FOR ADVERTISEMENT LUDICROUS!!
@bellhairrat1 I agree with Hicks(and you) that advertising is not at all necessary, and that it can be manipulative, I never said it wasn't. I simply said that it is a logical way for someone to promote a product. Look at independent business, they'd be dead without ads in the local newspaper, or on billboards. These independent businesses included comedy clubs that Hicks would work at.
@kylio27 This. If people sincerely can be categorized in and appeal to in such an obvious and easy way, and a business knows how to make money off of it, I don't really see the problem. They're making money, that's their job.
@pooscifer But why is "making money" your rationale for it not being a problem? Manipulation isn't a problem? I'm not attacking, but rather asking what the thought process is that validates manipulation by corporations and the marketing firms that work for them.
@RipTheSystem33 What is the thought process behind the idea that they shouldn't manipulate people, if people are willing to be manipulated? That it's mean? That it's a pretty douchebag thing to do? Sure...that may be the case, but they're merely looking out for their own self-interest. They live and grow in a capitalistic environment, and naturally, they take advantage of that.
@pooscifer "What is the thought process behind the idea that they shouldn't manipulate people, if people are willing to be manipulated?"
What a colossal contradiction that is. The very definition of "manipulation" is control. If one is to be manipulated, they don't know they are being manipulated. That's the whole point.
@RipTheSystem33 Why do you always see it as "manipulative"? Look at movie commercials, are those "manipulative"? OR are they just trying to communicate the existence of a film so more people will know about it, thus more people see it on THEIR CHOICE. No one is forcing them to, and I don't see it as "manipulative", but rather just a way to COMMUNICATE the existence of a product. But sure, there are some manipulative ads, just be a human and choose the products that interest you. Free world, man!
@kylio27 I think your argument is inconsistent. First off, you started arguing for small business marketing, and I made the point that this marketing isn't the problem. Now you are ignoring that and asserting again that I said it's "all manipulative." Either stick to the argument or don't debate. First you say some marketing is "manipulative garbage," and now you say "I don't see it as 'manipulative.'" The fact is that it's no secret that marketing is manipulative- just ask a marketing exec.
@RipTheSystem33 Well, perhaps I should clarify; I don't see it as manipulative, because I have a choice in the matter. I guess I can see if other people find it manipulative; but I think those are insecure people, and are weak minded, because they ironically demean their own choice under all that marketing.
I just see advertising as a high budgeted communication tool, to promote a product. In the end; YOU choose what you want.
@kylio27 This isn't a matter of perspective. It's a fact that most modern corporate marketing is manipulative. That's the way it works: all you have to do is sit in a marketing boardroom or watch a marketing video. It's no secret whatsoever. That doesn't mean it will manipulate everyone. It means that any marketing designed to appeal to irrational desire or create desire is by default manipulative. That's why children are quite easy and important to market to. It's simply not what you say it is.
@pyramidsofgizah - Lol, yea blame anything but your own free will. Find some boogeyman to blame instead... I don't smoke because of anything but my own free will and by my own free choice. Neither do you.
@pyramidsofgizah Yeah cos you seriously ahve no will power whatsoever. In fact your just a weak and pathetic individual with no inner power whatsoever. Goddamn those awful people for MAKING you smoke. Fucking grow a gnad and accept the fact that you smoke cos you want to. Don't blame candy you faggot.
@kingmobz You are a very unhappy person aren't you. I'm sorry to see that, I hope you feel better about yourself someday. Later. Oh yeah, and fuck yourself etc etc.
@RipTheSystem33 "It's simply not what you say it is." Your idea of marketing is really just what I would call "convincing". Marketing is really just trying to convince someone to purchase a product. How is a commercial for a film(for example) "manipulative"? It's simply showing what that product is, in an attempt to convince you to get it. You might as well say all art is "manipulative" because it attempts to stir emotions in you.
@kylio27 This isn't "my idea of marketing." It's marketing. Marketing firms are very open about this- it's no secret. Studying consumers' reactions to certain products, including children's, then using that data to play to or create desire, is manipulation, period, end of story. If you take a look at marketing literature, it's quite open about this, and seen as effective marketing. Art for art's sake may elicit an emotional reaction, but that reaction is not capitalized upon, as in marketing.
@RipTheSystem33 Then we pretty much agree. My initial point was that marketing DOES have a purpose, unlike Hicks says it doesn't at all. I know that major industries invest into marketing that may be "manipulative", but the basic point of marketing is to communicate a product. Many people rely on advertising to keep a business afloat.
I have never watched a commercial that has made me feel "manipulated", because commercials rarely make me want to buy a product. It comes down to OUR choice.
@kylio27 I would say the biggest issue of importance is that things that our society takes for granted as true were created by marketing. Women's body image comes to mind. It may be easy to just say, "ignore it," but it isn't that simple. Marketing creates or feeds many issues like this by marketing to children during their psychologically formative years. The fact that for-profit interests shape public opinion or image does not contribute to a healthy society, bottom line.
@RipTheSystem33 Just to be clear. What about examples of advertising like commercials for films and video games? Or ads for independent businesses, like comedy clubs? Are these all "evil"?
@kylio27 I never asserted anything is "evil," and I believe I've already covered small business a couple of times, so it appears we're going in circles on that one. You may want to scroll down on that one. As far as films and video games, it would depend on the particular advertisement, as with anything else. But anything that has a profit motive first should be seen as just that, instead of assuming everything is in our best interest.
Yeah but haven't you ever heard of subliminal advertising? Someone also mentioned that much of advertising is directed at children. I can attest to that if u read one of my comments earlier. Basically, there's more to it than what the advertisers are telling you conscious mind, it is what they are telling your sub conscious as well. Furthermore i think Bill hicks would be happy to know we are having discussions about the things he says :)
@kylio27 if someone has a product that was made from the heart then that might be something to let people know about but bill never looked at advertising in a logical way that's exactly the problem with this world everyone seems to be striving for logic and all it does is build up resentment in us for each other computers think in logic or they will come the singularity and if we follow suit were fucked that was bills point follow ur heart not logic cos if u do YOU'LL END UP IN ADVERTISING!
For some people, it is hard to "follow" their heart without money, therefore they advertise. I honestly don't see it as "evil", that is really just over-the-top sensationalism. You choose the products you want, it's a free world, Hicks even agree himself that people should have freedom to choose as they please. The idiots are the ones that waste their own money on dumb shit constantly, and consistently.
@kylio27 In the advertising world, the masses are thought of as sheep. Bill didn`t like to see people treated that way. The system is not educating you, but looking to keep you consuming. Bill was wondering where`s the altruism in all this.
How long can you go with a "kill yourself" joke, seriously Bill? That's weak, and lazy. We get it, you dislike marketing, that one can go under the rest of your heavy-handed political commentary material.
@bigwhytes Im sorry but bill hicks is/was not a big name in Europe, and you cant expect me to know who the fuck he is. But judging from the comment i think he died quite some time ago?
The reason I love Bill Hicks is our belief systems are pretty close, although I don't use drugs. His ideas are golden for the most part. His spiritual stuff is really good, as is his objective material, like right here. He's so smart, and the reason people are laughing is because he is being funny. He could make people laugh and think, which makes him one of the greatest. Him and Carlin are my faves.
Hugo Chavez, in a speech discussing the U.S government the other day - “Would it be so strange that they’ve invented technology to spread cancer and we won’t know about it for 50 years?”
@NexisFilms -- If you watch his last interview on Sacred Cow, someone asks about Carlin, Bill asks the viewer if he saw his recent HBO Special (NY 92), said how he was on fire, and how Carlin was a part of the breed of originality and greatness.
@NexisFilms Bush Jr: Watch what he said about his father. Jonas brothers/Rebecca Black: Watch what he said about Rick Astley. ipods: Dunno, never said anything about walkman..
@NexisFilms Hitchens was an atheist, but far right wing, and actually embraced aspects of authoritarianism. I don't think Bill Hicks would have thought too much of Hitchens, actually. But, that is nothing more than my opinion.
you made an analogy including a president of the united states, to Rebecca black...HAHAHAHA. Woww son, bill hicks would just slap you in the face for that, and tell you to get out from underneath that rock you've put yourself in. HAHAHA. omg ahah, is their anything people won't say these days. The sadest thing tho 22 likes!!!! THE WORLD HAS GONE MAD HAHAHA
@NexisFilms hitchens supported bush and all wars started by the US, although he was a great intellect, he had a very poor world view and stood for alot of what Hicks protested
@Rokamakafown Certainly. Hitchens was an Authoritarian, and actually called for even more extreme policy against the Arab region. While he was far more honest about this than what U.S. foreign policy implies, his propositions would be highly oppressive in application.
@Rokamakafown haha this is how i just learned that hitchens has died. i kept reading "was" and "had" and thought to myself "are they talking about a different hitchens or did he switch his views in major ways and that rokamakafown is referring to his old views?". sweet... although i have seen one of hitchens' earlier debates and he sounded more reasonable in that. some say he has gotten all neocon-like only after 9/11.
i don't have enough time to really figure that out though.
He's right, marketing is for shallow, shit cake eating scumbags, its only acceptable if you're doing it for a charity. Its even more apt for people who upload random videos to youtube merely to get a website link 'out there'.
And really. When George Carlin rips on people he still KNOWS how to be humorous about it. This guy doesn't care cause he knows he's not good enough to make this funny so thus he delivers it seriously. And he doesn't seem to have any type of wit about him like most hicks down south. Come up north to NJ not a single fucking person knows who this guy is. He's a loser and a sad piece of shit who likely used marketing to get his name out then realized nothing could work due to his lack of humor & wit
@RedShifted76 God someones angry, but you've made some fair points. If marketing is morally ethical then fair enough. However, personally I believe marketing is the art of hype. You take something which would normally pose no interest to anyone, and you hype it up to the point where people believe they need it (often because you tell them they need it). Marketing is the art of categorising culture so it can be sold off piece by piece...
@RedShifted76 Now as for your statement about advertising. Yes, most advertisers are very clever. They are clever because they know about playing to people's insecurities in order to sell their products. Advertising is based on the idea that to sell something, you have to present a need for it. And yes, there is advertising that simply displays the product and asks nothing more- but when adverts are forced on you on every Youtube page, then it comes off somewhat desperate...
@RedShifted76 And for your "only 4-5 years ago youtube was not even worth marketing on", that suggests the "jumping on the bandwagon" scenario. I'm too naive to know whether Youtube is better off because of this, but corporations only tend to show interest in a product when it can do something for them financially, and that alone makes it a shallow practise. Also Bill Hicks is not out there to get laughs. He's out there to send a message about standing up against everything banal in the world...
@RedShifted76 Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to start an argument or something, just putting a point across. If you're fine doing marketing then that's your choice, but there's no need to get quite so defensive.
@RedShifted76 "Come up north to NJ not a single fucking person knows who this guy is."
That's because it's NJ. Not a single fucking person in NJ knows a single fucking thing that doesn't involve how to make your hair giant, how to make your skin orange, and how to kill every fucking brain cell in your head.
We are evil because we talked apple into giving away 3 million dollars worth of electronics to all your fat asses. We are evil because we've helped countless small business's stay afloat during the recession when w/out us GIANT corps would have swallowed them whole. Marketing helps prevent big companies from monopolizing the rest of the world. But you idiots don't realize how that works cause you know shit about it. This guys a comedian, but I don't see him making anyone laugh. At best a moron.
@RedShifted76 You claim two things: One, "I don't see him making anyone else laugh." I find that peculiar, as the only way you could be here is if you were watching a video where the only thing that you are watching is him make other people laugh. And secondly, "Come up north to NJ not a single fucking person knows who this guy is," as if that population is the most important group of people when it comes to assessing humor. Notice related links with his name in it total over 3 million views?
And for any dumbass that wants to believe advertisers are evil the fact is many people think that because most advertisers are incredibly smart. The ones you see on youtube are not even real advertisers for the most part. Theres a difference between marketing and spamming, learn it. Lots of us marketers have saved small business's from going under during the recession guess we're evil because of that? And heres another thing will continue on my next post.
I am a marketer no we did NOT increase marketing on youtube BECAUSE of the recession. Shows how much some of these idiots know then to see 33 people agreeing with that idiot just shows how little most people know. Youtube got bombed with advertising BECAUSE of its SUCCESS. Only 4-5 years ago youtube was not even worth marketing on. Now it has become a hightraffic location and like ANY high traffic location you're gonna see marketing.
People who don't find this hilarious are asleep. It's not hilarious for shock value or because it deals with intrinsically funny concepts. It's hilarious because it's a STRIKINGLY true commentary on our society and very few people ever talk about it, and Bill Hicks was one of the pioneers of TRUTH in comedy, along with George Carlin.
Watching this while, high, I completely understand what hes saying. He IS planting seeds, he IS telling them to kill themselves. One day they will. Day by day they kill themselves with their own guilt
@TheConspiracyRealist Yeah, nobody would do that because that would actually benefit somebody else and oh fuck no, we can't have that. (Sarcasm) Lol. I just don't care about our species anymore. :)
@budahcode you can actually pin point this advertisement debacle to Edward Bernays aka the father of Public Relations. He was the the nephew of Sigmund Freud. before him, companies plateau'd in sales. (they only mfg,'d as needed) Bernays changed that by tapping into our subconscious (the primitive subconscious, animal)

Of course there is manipulative marketing, but that doesn't mean it is all bad.
kylio27 3 weeks ago
@kylio27 Almost all modern marketing is manipulative, and all manipulation is bad. Even the "father" of the PR industry and modern marketing, Edward Bernays, was a propaganda specialist under Wilson during WWI. He even wrote a book, called "Propaganda." They actually called it that in the early 1900s, because it was before the word has a stigma attached to it. Bernays changed marketing from being informative (product does x, y and z) to appealing to irrational desire. Psychological manipulation.
RipTheSystem33 3 weeks ago
@RipTheSystem33 "Almost all modern marketing is manipulative"
Key word: ALMOST I explained that much of advertising is pandering, manipulative garbage, but my point is still valid; that it is not innately harmful like Hicks would want you to believe. Many independent businesses would die if they had not ads in the local paper, which goes for comedy clubs...ZING.
kylio27 3 weeks ago
@kylio27 "...it is not innately harmful..."
RipTheSystem33 3 weeks ago
@kylio27 YOU ARE NAIVE TELL ME ONE THING FROM ADVERTISING THAT YOU REALLY NEED AND BILL WILL TELL YOU THAT YOU WERE DOING JUST FINE BEFORE YOU SEEN THE ADVERT THAT WAS OFFERING SAID PRODUCT!... EVERYTHING YOU HAVE YOU THINK YOU NEED BILLS THOUGHTS ARE FROM A HIGHER PLACE BEYOND NAIVETY HE STANDS UP FOR YOU AND YOU STAND UP FOR ADVERTISEMENT LUDICROUS!!
bellhairrat1 3 weeks ago
@bellhairrat1 I agree with Hicks(and you) that advertising is not at all necessary, and that it can be manipulative, I never said it wasn't. I simply said that it is a logical way for someone to promote a product. Look at independent business, they'd be dead without ads in the local newspaper, or on billboards. These independent businesses included comedy clubs that Hicks would work at.
kylio27 3 weeks ago
@kylio27 This. If people sincerely can be categorized in and appeal to in such an obvious and easy way, and a business knows how to make money off of it, I don't really see the problem. They're making money, that's their job.
pooscifer 3 weeks ago
@pooscifer But why is "making money" your rationale for it not being a problem? Manipulation isn't a problem? I'm not attacking, but rather asking what the thought process is that validates manipulation by corporations and the marketing firms that work for them.
RipTheSystem33 3 weeks ago
@RipTheSystem33 What is the thought process behind the idea that they shouldn't manipulate people, if people are willing to be manipulated? That it's mean? That it's a pretty douchebag thing to do? Sure...that may be the case, but they're merely looking out for their own self-interest. They live and grow in a capitalistic environment, and naturally, they take advantage of that.
pooscifer 3 weeks ago

@pooscifer "What is the thought process behind the idea that they shouldn't manipulate people, if people are willing to be manipulated?"
What a colossal contradiction that is. The very definition of "manipulation" is control. If one is to be manipulated, they don't know they are being manipulated. That's the whole point.
RipTheSystem33 3 weeks ago
@RipTheSystem33 Why do you always see it as "manipulative"? Look at movie commercials, are those "manipulative"? OR are they just trying to communicate the existence of a film so more people will know about it, thus more people see it on THEIR CHOICE. No one is forcing them to, and I don't see it as "manipulative", but rather just a way to COMMUNICATE the existence of a product. But sure, there are some manipulative ads, just be a human and choose the products that interest you. Free world, man!
kylio27 3 weeks ago
@kylio27 I think your argument is inconsistent. First off, you started arguing for small business marketing, and I made the point that this marketing isn't the problem. Now you are ignoring that and asserting again that I said it's "all manipulative." Either stick to the argument or don't debate. First you say some marketing is "manipulative garbage," and now you say "I don't see it as 'manipulative.'" The fact is that it's no secret that marketing is manipulative- just ask a marketing exec.
RipTheSystem33 3 weeks ago
@RipTheSystem33 Well, perhaps I should clarify; I don't see it as manipulative, because I have a choice in the matter. I guess I can see if other people find it manipulative; but I think those are insecure people, and are weak minded, because they ironically demean their own choice under all that marketing.
I just see advertising as a high budgeted communication tool, to promote a product. In the end; YOU choose what you want.
kylio27 3 weeks ago
@kylio27 This isn't a matter of perspective. It's a fact that most modern corporate marketing is manipulative. That's the way it works: all you have to do is sit in a marketing boardroom or watch a marketing video. It's no secret whatsoever. That doesn't mean it will manipulate everyone. It means that any marketing designed to appeal to irrational desire or create desire is by default manipulative. That's why children are quite easy and important to market to. It's simply not what you say it is.

You might as well say all art is "manipulative" because it attempts to stir emotions in you.
kylio27 2 weeks ago
@kylio27 This isn't "my idea of marketing." It's marketing. Marketing firms are very open about this- it's no secret. Studying consumers' reactions to certain products, including children's, then using that data to play to or create desire, is manipulation, period, end of story. If you take a look at marketing literature, it's quite open about this, and seen as effective marketing. Art for art's sake may elicit an emotional reaction, but that reaction is not capitalized upon, as in marketing.
RipTheSystem33 2 weeks ago
@RipTheSystem33 Then we pretty much agree. My initial point was that marketing DOES have a purpose, unlike Hicks says it doesn't at all. I know that major industries invest into marketing that may be "manipulative", but the basic point of marketing is to communicate a product. Many people rely on advertising to keep a business afloat.
I have never watched a commercial that has made me feel "manipulated", because commercials rarely make me want to buy a product. It comes down to OUR choice.
kylio27 2 weeks ago
@kylio27 I would say the biggest issue of importance is that things that our society takes for granted as true were created by marketing. Women's body image comes to mind. It may be easy to just say, "ignore it," but it isn't that simple. Marketing creates or feeds many issues like this by marketing to children during their psychologically formative years. The fact that for-profit interests shape public opinion or image does not contribute to a healthy society, bottom line.
RipTheSystem33 2 weeks ago
@RipTheSystem33 Just to be clear. What about examples of advertising like commercials for films and video games? Or ads for independent businesses, like comedy clubs? Are these all "evil"?
kylio27 2 weeks ago

@kylio27 if someone has a product that was made from the heart then that might be something to let people know about but bill never looked at advertising in a logical way that's exactly the problem with this world everyone seems to be striving for logic and all it does is build up resentment in us for each other computers think in logic or they will come the singularity and if we follow suit were fucked that was bills point follow ur heart not logic cos if u do YOU'LL END UP IN ADVERTISING!
bellhairrat1 3 weeks ago
@bellhairrat1 "follow ur heart not logic"
For some people, it is hard to "follow" their heart without money, therefore they advertise. I honestly don't see it as "evil", that is really just over-the-top sensationalism. You choose the products you want, it's a free world, Hicks even agree himself that people should have freedom to choose as they please. The idiots are the ones that waste their own money on dumb shit constantly, and consistently.

Come up north to NJ not a single fucking person knows who this guy is. He's a loser and a sad piece of shit who likely used marketing to get his name out then realized nothing could work due to his lack of humor & wit
RedShifted76 1 month ago
@RedShifted76 God someones angry, but you've made some fair points. If marketing is morally ethical then fair enough. However, personally I believe marketing is the art of hype. You take something which would normally pose no interest to anyone, and you hype it up to the point where people believe they need it (often because you tell them they need it). Marketing is the art of categorising culture so it can be sold off piece by piece...
GoAskAlex1991 1 month ago
@RedShifted76 Now as for your statement about advertising. Yes, most advertisers are very clever. They are clever because they know about playing to people's insecurities in order to sell their products. Advertising is based on the idea that to sell something, you have to present a need for it. And yes, there is advertising that simply displays the product and asks nothing more- but when adverts are forced on you on every Youtube page, then it comes off somewhat desperate...
GoAskAlex1991 1 month ago
@RedShifted76 And for your "only 4-5 years ago youtube was not even worth marketing on", that suggests the "jumping on the bandwagon" scenario. I'm too naive to know whether Youtube is better off because of this, but corporations only tend to show interest in a product when it can do something for them financially, and that alone makes it a shallow practise. Also Bill Hicks is not out there to get laughs. He's out there to send a message about standing up against everything banal in the world...
GoAskAlex1991 1 month ago
@RedShifted76 Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to start an argument or something, just putting a point across. If you're fine doing marketing then that's your choice, but there's no need to get quite so defensive.

We are evil because we talked apple into giving away 3 million dollars worth of electronics to all your fat asses.
