Wow, I think one of my favorite jazz songs after hearing it only a few times. Just great.
It even inspired me to finally upload a portion of my favorite version of Green Dolphin Street (Eddie Lockjaw Davis)... if interested, just search "On Green Dolphin Street - Eddie Lockjaw Davis" or plug "PqwnZlc2v7s" into a YouTube url
Great post though, what a song! I'm going to listen to a lot more Dexter Gordon, that's for sure!
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. The college I went to had only one copy of this CD and it was of course scratched. It has been out of print forever and the quality of this posting is really good. Please post the rest of the album if you are able to. It would benefit all concerned. Slide Hampton plays a super hip solo on the blues on this album.
Dexter was a great influence on John Coltrane - one of my other great sax heroes, who of course was the inventor of the "Coltraphone" - a fabulous tenor sax-shaped instrument renowned for playing sheets of sound and relaying messages from the Cosmos in the hands of JC and his descendants/disciples ;-)
george shearing.tubby hayes vic feldman.dizzy reece.come from a little place near europe.i wonder if dickwhittington has heard of such a place? L.O.L. this is nice playing by all concerned.many thanks.
Nice cut from two of my all time favorites, Dexter and Slide. This tune definitely is a good demonstration of Hampton's abilities. I'm a bone player and can appreciate and love the various elements of his playing, though I can't hold a candle to him. Also superb trumpet work by Dizzy Reece, though I've never heard of him. It's funny how you can listen religiously to jazz for 35 years and still come across star quality players you've never heard before. Thank you YOUTUBE!
Dexter Gordon is my sax hero, he's muscular at times and sensitive when he needs to be, what a talent. And he can act very well too, as he demonstrates in 'Round Midnight'. Great film. I need the chords for Tuffy. Anyone got them?
This is really "cool" the way this was presented and even picturing the soloists is great. I did not recognize the young trumpeter. I did recognize Dexter and Slide Hampton. I know Dexter and Slide were in Europe for over 10 years. I don;t want to guess. .. Great music. Thank you for posting...
Slide is my idol. point blank. period.

One of the best version I've heard. Sonny's cover is different in every respect and both are original.

The trumpter looks a lot like a young Nat Adderly, but he usually played the Cornet...
