I loved this song since I heard it for the first time. It goes slowly underskin during the listening and, to be frank i judge it the best from the album. I can't better exply but, beyond the meaning or absence of it there's a special feeling and tension in it.Paul
sometimes(after i get drunk) i feel like i can relate to this great artist.battlin wit addictions...neva makin his way to really mainstream audience but always being tru and beautiful
I've always loved this song, especially the line "If you find me feeding daisies, please turn my face up to the sky/And leave me be, watching the moon roll by/Whatever it was, you know it was all because/I've been on the town, washing the bullshit down." A song about mortality...and yet there's an optimism about it. Great tune!
Have seen Gord 3 times, once 35 years ago. 2 times in the last 3 years. He's the best songwriter that ever lived IMO. This is my favorite. Thanks, the live ones on the tube aren't really worth listening to.
I love lightfoot so much. I am 43 and grew up listening to him. Bob Dylan said it best-"everytime I hear a Lightfoot song I wish it would never end" I feal the same way. Saw him three times in my life and I cant wait to see him play in his home in January. This song sings to my soul. Doug from Cambridge
the rose is an illusion to the biblical pearl that someone buried.
the rose is wisdom. will you bury it? He has seen wisdom and truth unfold.
the train is the way to salvation and the watchman is the devil. He is kicking you dreams about. As in a later song "Praise the lord their is a train leaving soon"
Death and salvation. notice he is talking about his death in this song as well and the train is the same. the road to salvation.
The watchman is the devil and the train is a man's dream or calling, Each man must work out his own salvation but their will always be adversity. That is what this song is saying. The train is a metaphor for salvation. "praise the Lord their's a train leaving soon" from the song TOO MANY CLUES IN THIS ROOM. touches on this again.
Wow! I was looking for this song just a month ago and couldn't find the original. Now I find that you posted it on my birthday! Nice present, thanks! :)
Brings me back to another lifetime.....I've seen Gord perform many times through the years....I still have all my original vinyls.....Thanks for sharing and uploading...

Happy 73rd today Gordon!
If you find me feedin' daisies
Please turn my face up to the sky
And leave me be
Watchin' the moon roll by
Whatever I was
You know it was all because
I've been on the town
Washin' the bullshit down
Could not have said it any better myself!
