thanks for answering that...the movie is clear as mud now...lol but i appreciate the effort i guess it's supposed to just stay a mystery i bet if I asked Jack himself he wouldn't know who da man was either...I guess I missed the point of the whole movie...I had forgotten I'd even asked...ty alot! GB
am I just a dummas? or was it impossible to tell who the killer was? i never figured it out! can someone spoil it for me and tell me who the killer was? he's the burned guy in the car right? but who was he before that? thanks...GB
@GettnBooted Yes he was the guy in the car crash, but we never see him and we don't know who he was before that. We don't need to, because the movie is the story of Nicholson's character. We find out he was right all along, and the sting operation would probably have proved him right if not for the crash. It was a real ball-acher of an ending.
@jegspillerpiano Actually there is a scene in that movie which gives you a chance to see murderer's figure. Watch carefully a moment when det. Black enters shop to speak with an older woman.
There really was a killer on the way to see that little girl at the end of the movie. Benicio del Toro's character was innocent. But one of the movie's flaws is that Jack Nicholson kind of just "goes crazy" out of nowhere, there's really no backstory or explanation to why he starts drinking, talking to himself, or hearing voices. A "normal" 60 year old man just cracks? Not all that believable if you ask me.
@waldenpondogre It makes perfect sense. Have you watched the entire movie? He swore an oath to a devastated mother. She even said do you swear on your soul? he was dedicated from that point on to finding the murderer. And he came close to proving who it was. He was absolutely sure but noone else was. Then when the murder (Pastor Simon) only Jack knew for certain. And since the guy no showed (died in the car crash) he probably believes hes still out there. Thus probably driving him crazy.
Why did he keep working on the case? Because he didn´t want to retire? Because he made an oath in front of a devastated mother? Black suspected that the monster who killed those childs wasn´t captured. After his investigations, he was SURE.
But random situations came in the middle. The man who continued working to stop the killer ended up alone, lost in his insanity. And the stupid cops who wouldn´t lift a finger to investigate went on...
@TheDayfornight Yes he was. And sometimes in this fucked up place, when you are right and want to press on, you end up alone, crying at the moon with a bottle in your hands...
Thanks for posting this. It's one of the most amazing performances ever, it makes me cry everytime I see it. Sean Penn's such a great director! His movies are so intense.

The killer dies in accident car at the end (crash with a truck). The killer was real.
